Georgia Highlands takes first two games of series with Andrew College

The Georgia Highlands College baseball team won the first two games of their conference series this week with Andrew College. The Chargers took the opener 15-12 Tuesday night on a walk-off, three-run homerun and defeated the Tigers 6-3 on Friday.

The two teams take to the diamond again Saturday for a pair of 7-inning games in Cuthbert to conclude the series.

Drew Davis hit a walk-off, three-run home run Tuesday night at LakePoint in the bottom of the ninth after the visiting Tigers had tied the game in the top of the inning.

The two teams combined for 27 runs and 26 hits in a game that saw the Chargers take a 6-1 lead after three innings, only to fall behind 9-6 through the top of the fifth.

GHC scored six runs in their next two frames to lead 12-9, before the Tigers tied the game with a run in the seventh and two more in the top of the ninth.

Along with Davis’ blast, Mitch Burger and Brandon Bell homered in the contest for the Chargers. Davis, Burger, and Brandon Etheridge all finished with three RBI.

Will Griffin picked up the pitching victory by working the final inning and one-third.

In Friday’s second game of the series in Cuthbert, Georgia Highlands scored five runs in the final two innings to win 6-3.

Andrew led 2-1 going to the eighth inning when the Chargers’ offense ignited.

GHC went up 3-2 in the top of the eighth. Andrew tied the game in the bottom of the inning and the Chargers won it with a three-run ninth.

Daniel Gooden had the only Georgia Highlands’ hit in their two-run eighth. The Chargers took advantage of an infield error, a sacrifice bunt, and a pair of fielder’s choice grounders to plate their runs.

In the GHC ninth, Tristan Roberts had an RBI single and Jonathan White an RBI double. Devin Bilardello also coaxed a bases loaded walk.

Colby Taylor collected the pitching win for the Chargers with a shutout inning of relief in the eighth. Griffin, who was the Tuesday winning pitcher, notched a save with a scoreless ninth.

Andrew (12-22 overall, 1-8 in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) hosts the final two games of the series with GHC Saturday beginning at 1pm.

The Chargers (20-17, 5-4), currently in fifth place in the conference, look to keep pace with Darton, South Georgia, and Gordon who are currently tied for the GCAA lead at 7-3. ABAC is 6-4 heading into Saturday’s games.
