Athletes Beyond Bartow: Beasley has active day in Falcons' loss, collegiate players contribute a

Adairsville's NFL star Vic Beasley had an active day that included five tackles with a sack in the Atlanta Falcons' three-point loss Sunday at Carolina and local college football players contributed from a variety of positions in games across the nation this past week.


NFL

VIC BEASLEY — Atlanta Falcons (3rd year pro; OLB; Clemson University; Adairsville HS)… had five tackles, including a sack Sunday in a 20-17 loss to the Carolina Panthers. The NFL sack leader from last season now has four in six games played this season. Beasley missed two games due to injury. Atlanta (4-4) is third in the NFC South after reaching the Super Bowl last February. They host the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday.


COLLEGE FOOTBALL

DeANDRE APPLIN — Georgia State University (Jr., DB, Adairsville HS)… recorded five tackles, four solo, and had two tackles for loss and a forced fumble in a 21-17 win at Georgia Southern this past Saturday. He now has 31 total tackles. Georgia State (5-3, 4-1 Sun Belt Conference) plays at Texas State this Saturday.

BROOKS BARDEN — UNC-Charlotte (Jr., QB, Cartersville HS)… entered midway through the fourth quarter of Charlotte’s 6-0 loss to Old Dominion Saturday. He completed his first pass to Trent Bostick for 24 yards, but finished the game 2-of-6 for 33 yards. He also ran once for no gain in two drives. The 49ers (1-8, 1-4 Conference USA) host Middle Tennessee this Saturday afternoon.

TERRIUS CALLAHAN — Austin Peay State University (Fr., WR, Cartersville HS)… saw action Saturday for the Governors in a 35-28 win over Tennessee Tech. APSU (6-4, 5-1 Ohio Valley Conference) plays at Eastern Kentucky this Saturday.

TREVOR CARLTON — Reinhardt University (So., LB, Cartersville HS)… had seven total tackles and recovered a fumble in the Eagles’ 54-0 home blanking of Bluefield College (VA) Saturday. Carlton now has 19 tackles in six games this season. Reinhardt (8-0, 5-0 Mid-South Conference) travels to St. Andrews University this Saturday.

MARCUS CHILDERS — Northern Illinois (Fr., QB, Adairsville HS)… was 23-of-43 for 235 yards, but threw a pair of interceptions in the Huskies’ 27-17 loss last Thursday at Toledo. He also rushed 15 times for 49 yards and scored one touchdown. For the year, Childers has 378 yards rushing and 1,107 passing. NIU (6-3, 4-1 Mid-America Conference) hosts Ball State Thursday night.

XAVIOR COAXUM — LaGrange College (Fr., DB, Cartersville HS)… had one tackle Saturday in the Panthers’ 35-23 loss at Maryville College (TN). LaGrange (4-5, 3-3 USA South Conference) hosts Huntingdon College this Saturday.

DALEN CURTIS — Brevard College (Fr., OL, Cartersville HS)… the Tonados starting center, Curtis was part of an offense that averaged 339 yards per game. They ended their season Saturday with a 41-17 home loss to Averett University Saturday and a 4-6 mark.

TRASE FEZZIA — Ellsworth CC (Fr., DB, Cartersville HS)… had a solo tackle and returned one kick for 16 yards in Saturday’s 30-20 home loss to Iowa Western CC. The Panthers (3-7, 1-0 Iowa Community College Athletic Conference) play at Highland CC (KS) this Saturday afternoon.

T.L. FORD — UNC-Charlotte (Sr., WR, Cartersville HS)… was only targeted one time in a start Saturday vs. Old Dominion. The 49ers (1-8, 1-4 Conference USA) host Middle Tennessee this Saturday afternoon.

GABRIEL GRIDLEY — ASA-Brooklyn CC (Fr., Punter, Cartersville HS)… had nine punts for a 42.2 average this past Friday in the Avengers’ 10-6 victory over Milford. One of his punts was good for 60 yards. ASA (7-1, 2-0 Northeast Football Conference) plays at Hocking CC Saturday.

LUCAS JOHNSON — Georgia State University (Jr., OL, Cass HS)… started his second straight week at right tackle for the Panthers in a 21-17 win at Georgia Southern. The Panthers rushed for 189 yards and passed for 147 in the victory. Georgia State (5-3, 4-1 Sun Belt Conference) plays at Texas State this Saturday.

EMMANUEL JONES — Colorado State University (Fr., LB, Woodland HS)… saw playing time in a 16-13 loss at Wyoming Saturday. CSU (6-4, 4-2 Mountain West Conference) hosts Boise State this Saturday Night.

MARK QUATTLEBAUM — UNC-Charlotte (Jr., SL, Cartersville HS)… led the 49ers receiving corp with four receptions for 46 yards Saturday in a 6-0 loss to Old Dominion. He caughth all four of his tagets including a 23-yarder in the second quarter. Charlotte (1-8, 1-4 Conference USA) hosts Middle Tennessee this Saturday afternoon.

ISAIAH ROSS — Point Universitiy (Sr., LB, Woodland HS)… had six tackles and credited with one for loss in the Skyhawks’ 52-19 loss at University of the Cumberlands (KY). With 58 tackles this season, Ross is second for the Point defense. The Skyhawks (3-7, 1-4) play at Union College (KY) this Saturday.

JOHN SCIFERS — University West Georgia (So., PK, Woodland HS)… kicked off five times in the Wolves’ 20-13 win at Florida Tech last Saturday. UWG (8-2, 5-2 Gulf South Conference) hosts University of West Florida this Saturday afternoon in Carrollton.

TORRIAN SCRUTCHINS — Ellsworth CC (Fr., DL, Cartersville HS)… saw action in the Panthers’ 30-20 loss to Iowa Western CC this past Saturday. Ellsworth (3-7, 1-0 Iowa Community College Athletic Conference) plays at Highland CC (KS) this Saturday afternoon.
