Athletes Beyond Bartow: The past week's update for 19 locals playing college baseball


This week's 'Athletes Beyond Bartow' baseball update features the progress of nineteen different local players as the collegiate baseball season begins to hit full stride. Check out the recent results for those players each week as part of our ongoing series. NOTE: Track & Field, Wrestling, Tennis, Basketball, and Softball updates were published separately this week.

BASEBALL

CLIFTON DEMPSEY — Maryville College (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . appeared in all three games, starting twice, as the Scots won two of three at Piedmont College Feb. 26-28. Dempsey was 5-for-11 at the plate for the series with one RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. He has a .417 batting average, five RBI, and four stolen bases for Maryville (10-3 overall, 2-1 in Conference USA South). The Scots play at Emory & Henry March 1 and host conference foe, Covenant Mar. 4-5 in a three game series.

BO EDWARDS — University North Georgia (R-Sr., Adairsville HS) . . . has six appearances and three starts for the Nighthawks. He started one game and pinch hit in another as UNG dropped two of three to visiting Columbus State. Edwards has a pair of doubles in 15 at bats so far this season with one RBI and a walk. The Nighthawks (10-4 overall, 4-2 Peach Belt Conference) play at Anderson University March 2 and play a three-game PBC series at Georgia College March 4-6.

BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Georgia Highlands CC (Soph., Cass HS) . . . the Chargers’ outfielder has a .279 batting average with a five RBI and ten runs scored in 16 games. Etheridge also has four stolen bases. He went 2-for-5 with a game-winning, walk-off triple against Southern Union CC Feb. 24 and was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI Feb. 26 vs. Sinclair State CC. The Chargers (10-8 overall) were 2-3 for the week with a pair of wins over Southern Union, but were swept in a three-game, weekend series by Sinclair State CC. GHC hosts Cuyahoga (OH) CC March 4 and a three-game series with Guilford Tech (NC) CC March 5-6 at LakePoint in Emerson.

TY FOWLER — Tennessee Wesleyan College (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . made his second pitching appearance of the season Feb. 25 against Goshen College. He threw three shutout innings, yielding a pair of hits, no walks, and four strikeouts in a 3-0 victory. Fowler now has seven strikeouts for the season in four innings of work with no walks. He has not allowed an earned run and opponents are hitting only .133 against him. The 14th-ranked Bulldogs are 8-4 and play at St. Andrews University (NC) March 4-5.

MICHAEL GOSS — University of North Carolina-Greensboro (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . started all four games last week as the Spartans are off to a 6-1 start. Goss went 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and four RBI against Binghamton Feb. 28. For the season, he has a .310 batting average and an on base percentage of .444 with a slugging percentage of .483. The first baseman also has 10 RBI and has scored eight runs in 29 at bats. UNCG plays at N.C. State March 1 and will host Army in a three-game series March 4-6.

ROBERT HARRIS — Troy University (Jr., Adairsville HS) . . . made a pair of relief appearances last week. He threw two shutout innings in a 2-1 win over Alabama-Birmingham Feb. 24, allowing two hits and a walk. He struck out two Blazers. Harris also worked an inning and one-third Feb. 28 in a 7-2 loss at Southeastern Louisiana, but the Trojans won two of three in the series to improve to 7-1. Harris has struck out seven in five and one-third innings pitched with a .150 batting average against and is yet to allow an earned run. Troy hosts Alabama Tuesday (Mar 1), plays at UAB March 2, and plays March 4-6 in Pensacola, FL in the Cox Diamond Invitational where they will face Auburn, Southern Miss, and Michigan State.

HARRISON HATFIELD — Shorter University (Soph, Cartersville HS) . . . has four plate appearances in five appearances for the Hawks who are currently 7-8 (1-5 GSC) after being swept in a home, three-game conference series with University of North Alabama over the past weekend. Shorter is scheduled to host Georgia College March 2 and Mississippi College in a three-game Gulf South Conference series March 5-6.

BRADLEY HOOD — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., Cass HS) . . . the right hand pitcher threw one-third of an inning in a Feb. 24 win over Southern Union CC and worked an inning and two-thirds during a Feb. 27 loss to Sinclair State CC. Hood yielded his first three runs of the year against Sinclair State. He has four strikeouts and no walks with a 6.57 ERA in five appearances. GHC (10-8) hosts Cuyahoga (OH) CC March 4 and a three-game series with Guilford Tech (NC) CC March 5-6 at LakePoint in Emerson.

TRIPP JAMIESON — Univ. of the Cumberlands (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . went 2-for-9 with a 2-run homer, three RBI, and a run scored in a four-game sweep of Wright State-Lake Feb. 27-28. Jamieson has a .364 batting average and five extra base hits. His .818 slugging percentage includes two doubles, a triple, and a pair of home runs. The Patriots host Culver-Stockton College March 2 and host a pair of doubleheaders with University of Cincinnati-Clermont March 5-6.

CONNOR JUSTUS — Georgia Tech (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . the Jackets have started the season 7-0 and Justus leads the team with a .433 batting average as the starting shortstop. Georgia Tech swept University of Maryland-Baltimore County in a three-game series Feb. 26-28 and edged Georgia Southern in 16 innings Feb. 24. For the season, Justus has scored six runs and driven in three while his on-base percentage is .469. He carries a .956 fielding percentage. Tech hosts Georgia State March 1 and Western Carolina comes to Russ Chandler Stadium March 4-6 for a three game set.

SEAN McDERMOTT — Cleveland State CC (Fr., Adairsville HS) . . . went 2-for-3 at Chattanooga State CC Feb. 27 as the Cougars lost twice. He has a .364 batting average in 33 at bats. McDermott has scored five runs and produced five RBI with a .405 on-base percentage and .424 slugging percentage. Cleveland State CC is 5-6 and has home games this week with Gordon State College (March 2) and Volunteer State CC (March 4-5)

CHRIS MORTON — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., Cass HS) . . . saw his first action of the season after recovering from tonsillitis surgery. He faced one batter Feb. 27. GHC went 2-3 last week and the Chargers season mark now stands at 10-8. Highlands hosts Cuyahoga (OH) CC March 4 and a three-game series with Guilford Tech (NC) CC March 5-6 at LakePoint in Emerson.

HUNTER OSBORN — Reinhardt University (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . the RHP is 3-0 in four starts for the Eagles. He has recorded 15 strikeouts in 20.2 innings pitched with a 1.31 ERA. He went 6 innings, allowing four hits and three walks with two strikeouts in a 3-1 win over Robert Morris College (IL) Feb. 27. RU lost the other three games in the four-game series and the Eagles record now stands at 13-5. They open Appalachian Athletic Conference play March 4-5 by hosting Union College (KY).

MASON ROBINSON — Wallace State-Dothan CC (Soph., Woodland HS) . . . playing in the outfield, Robinson is 6-for-38 (.159 BA) in eleven games with a homerun, three doubles, three stolen bases, and three RBI. He has also walked seven times. The Governors, 10-4, lost twice last week at Chipola CC (FL). They play at Pensacola State CC March 2, host Faulkner State (AL) March 3, and play at Gulf Coast CC (FL) March 4.

TRISTON SMITH — Young Harris College (Soph., Adairsville HS) . . . made a pair of appearances Feb. 27-28 in a three-game series with Lander University. He played shortstop for the Mountain Lions in the first game of a doubleheader Feb. 28 and went 1-for-2 as an entry at shortstop in the second game. Lander swept the series as YHC slipped to 4-9 overall and 0-6 in the Peach Belt Conference. Young Harris hosts Cedarville University (OH) March 2 and travels to Augusta University March 4-6 for another three-game PBC series. JO JO UNDERWOOD — University of North Carolina-Greensboro (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . pinch hit Feb. 28 in a 19-3 win over Binghamton, going 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI. Underwood is hitting .333 for the season in three at bats. The Spartans have started the year 6-1 and play at N.C. State March 1 before hosting a three game series with Army March 4-6. TYLER WILL — Berry College (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . the RHP has now appeared in five games, including a pair of appearances at Sewanee (Feb. 27-28). He has allowed seven hits in four innings pitched while recording a save against Guilford College Feb. 13. The Vikings are 12-1 after winning two of three at Sewanee. Berry hosts Emory Tuesday (Mar. 1) and Transylvania University (KY) in a three-game series March 5-6.

ASA WILLIAMS — Reinhardt University (Sr., Cartersville HS) . . . the Eagles’ catcher started one game of each doubleheader against Robert Morris College (IL) Feb. 27-28, going 0-for-5 for the series with one walk. RU lost three of four games in the series. Williams has a .250 batting average (7-for-28) for the season. His on-base perentage is .344 with a pair of doubles and six RBI. The Eagles (13-5) begin Appalachian Athletic Conference play March 4-5 when they host Union College (KY) for a three-game series.

CHAZ WILSON — Columbus State University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . allowed his first two earned runs of the season Feb. 27 in an 8-6 conference win over 7th-ranked University of North Georgia, but recovered to strike out the next two batters ending the eighth inning. He also threw a scoreless eighth inning Feb. 24 against Tuskegee University. Wilson has seven strikeouts in 7.1 innings over five relief appearances with a 2.45 ERA. CSU went 4-1 last week and won two of three at UNG. The Cougars are now 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the Peach Belt Conference. They step out of conference this week with games at Auburn University-Montgomery March 2 before hosting a pair of doubleheaders with Saginaw Valley State University (MI) March 5-6.
