It was a tough evening for local high school baseball teams Monday night. Woodland, Cass, and Excel Christian each lost region games on the road.
Cartersville was scheduled to play Collins Hill, but that game was postponed until Wednesday (March 16).
SEQUOYAH 4, WOODLAND 1 Sequoyah took a 4-0 lead through three innings Monday night against Woodland in Hickory Flat, then held on for a 4-1 win in the first game of a three-game, sub-region 7-AAAAA-A series between the two teams this week.
The Wildcats’ only run came in the top of the seventh when Jacob Frye singled home Garett Cornett.
Sequoyah pitcher, Hunter Gaddis, earned a complete-game victory scattering seven hits with no walks. He struck out five Wildcats and the only run allowed was unearned.
Kolby Stansel (2.2 IP, 9H, 4ER, 1BB, 2K) took the pitching loss for Woodland. Rodolpho Romo (3.1 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB) held the Chiefs scoreless over the final innings.
Frye (RBI) and Grant Robinson had two hits for the Wildcats. Hunter Reaid, Brandon Allen, and Trent Harrison had the other Woodland hits.
Randy Shelton, Hayes Heard, Austin Zeitler, and Gaddis had two hits apiece for Sequoyah.
Woodland (2-8) hosts Sequoyah for Game 2 of the series Wednesday at 5:55pm and the two teams will meet in Game 3 Friday at 5:55pm back at Sequoyah.
ROME 3, CASS 1
The Rome Wolves won a pitching duel Monday night over the visiting Cass Colonels at Legion Field in Rome, 3-1.
Rome senior Dylan Beasley tossed a complete game, one hitter for the win. He walked three and struck out ten.
Austin Pruett (4 IP, 3R, 1ER, 3H, 1BB, 4K) and Cody Johnson (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB) combined on a three-hitter for the Colonels. Pruett was tagged with the loss.
Rome scored two runs in the first inning and added another in the third.
Cass (3-6 overall, 2-2 in sub-region 7-AAAAA-A) scored its only run in the fourth.
Bailey Campbell was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Evan Collins was entered as a courtesy runner. Jordan Reed then drove Collins home with a double to left field.
The Colonels entertain Rome Wednesday at 5:55pm and play the final game of the three-game series at Legion Field in Rome on Friday at 5:55pm.
WHITEFIELD ACADEMY 10, EXCEL CHRISTIAN 1
Whitefield Academy pitchers Luke Persons (6 IP, 1ER, 6H, 2BB, 8K) and Russell Bell (1 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB) kept the visiting Excel Eagles off the scoreboard until the final inning in a 10-1 win.
Whitefield scored six runs in the first two innings to take control. The Wolfpack added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Excel (1-6) scored in the sixth when JosephCuomo walked and moved to second base on a groundout by Wyatt Karlovich. Marco Haro singled to centerfield, advancing Cuomo to third. Then Levi Blackwell drove home the Eagles’ run with a ground ball fielder’s choice to short.
Jordan Wilkie and Haro had two hits each for Excel. Trace Still (double), Blane Belisario, Darius Thrower, and Karlovich had the other ECA hits.
Wilkie (1 IP, 5R, 3ER, 4H, 1BB) and Belisario (5 IP, 5ER, 6H, 3BB, 3K) pitched for Excel.
Luke Miltner and Will Brogan had two hits and two RBI each for Whitefield Academy (3-6). Carter Huffman and John Schwartz had two hits and one RBI for the Wolfpack.
Excel hosts St. Francis Tuesday (March 15) at 5:30pm and Fellowship Christian on Thursday (March 17) at LakePoint in Emerson.
