Canes place third at Region 5AAAA tourney; Tigers fourth at Region 6AAA tourney


The Cartersville boys basketball team defeated Troup County Saturday to place third in the Region 5AAAA tournament, while the Adairsville Tigers fell to Coahulla Creek in the third place game of the Region 6AAA tournament at Calhoun.

CARTERSVILLE BOYS 59, TROUP COUNTY 53

The Cartersville Hurricanes defeated Troup County Saturday at LaGrange High School to earn the No. 3 seed from Region 5AAAA heading into next week’s Class AAAA State Tournament.

Jaylon Pugh scored 24 points to lead Cartersville. Trase Fezzia added nine points. T.J. Horton scored eight points. Perignon Dyer totaled seven. JaCorey Johns and JKobe Orr added five points each and Isaac Gridley chipped in with one point.

Troup took a 13-9 lead after one period, but the Canes recovered to lead 26-24 at halftime. Cartersville pushed their lead to 46-33 after three quarters and then held on for a six-point win.

Jay Jefferson led the Tigers with 17 points. King Mwikuta, Keon Heath, and Montez Crowe added eight points apiece.

Troup County will be the Region 5AAAA 4-seed in the state tournament and play at Blessed Trinity in the first round.

Cartersville (20-6) will open the state tournament next Saturday at Marist.

COAHULLA CREEK BOYS 44, ADAIRSVILLE 25

The Adairsville boys fell to Coahulla Creek 44-25 Saturday afternoon in the third place game of the Region 6AAA championship tournament.

The Tigers led 10-7 after one quarter, but were outscored 15-3 in the second period to trail 22-13 at the intermission. Coahulla Creek extended the lead to 35-17 after three quarters.

Tyler Phillips led the Colts with 14 points. Austin Tibbs and Maddox Adams added six each as Coahulla Creek improved to 19-7 on the year.

Hunter Hice and Mason Boswell scored six points each for Adairsville. Grayson Dailey added four points. Cole Hewatt scored three points while Denzel Pitt, Gaven Crunkleton, and Jesse O’Kelley added two points each.

Adairsville (16-13) will open the Class AAA state tournament next week on the road at either Franklin County or Morgan County. Those two teams were playing for the Region 8AAA championship Saturday night at Emmanuel College. The Tigers will play at the winner.
