The Cartersville boys were second and the Lady Canes placed fourth at the 10-team Cass-Cartersville Invitational held Tuesday at Cass High School.
Woodland’s girls placed sixth and the Woodland boys were tenth without their normal varsity starting lineups.
The Pope boys had the top four runners and five of the top nine to win the boys event. North Cobb placed third with Bremen and Duluth rounding out the top five.
Pope also captured the girls race, edging Centennial by a single point. Those two teams accounted for eight of the top ten runners and ten of the top thirteen. Harrison’s girls were third and Bremen placed fifth.
The race attracted 71 girls runners and 85 boys.
John Higinbotham won the boys race in 16:28. Sophie Boice was the girls winner in 19:01.
Alex Machado led the Cartersville girls with a 16th place finish in 22:17. She was followed by teammates Vanna Beach (33rd, 23:51), Trista Kelly (34th, 24:04), Alice Terry (40th, 24:50), Trinity Atkins (42nd, 24:56), Metztli Munoz (45th, 25:09), and Meghan Murphy (67th, 24:39).
Bill Archer paced the Hurricanes with a 7th place finish in 17:40. He was followed by teammates Alex Rios (9th, 17:53), Max Florence (12th, 18:21), Parker Breedlove (13th, 18:36), Colin McCann (15th, 18:40), Jacob Busek (20th, 18:56), and Levi Booth (22nd, 19:02).
Avery Hull led the Woodland girls with a 12th place finish in 22:06. She was followed by Lady Cats Mackenzie Stephenson (25th, 22:50) Erica Boatner (27th, 23:18), Anna Payne (26:27), and Libby Towle (28:56).
Olivia Flynn represented Cass in 24:34.
Pierre Brunet was the top boys runner for Woodland (20:19), followed by teammates Ian Van Order (20:49), Gabe Shephard (20:55), Kaleb Chance (21:03), Noah Spaulding (21:16), Walker Glass (23:07), and Logan Bennett (23:14).
For Cass, Bryce Kresho ran 20:56 followed by Logan Van Stijn (22:04) and Craigory Chatman (22:16). Evan Crane ran 20:32 for Adairsville.
Cartersville is scheduled to run Saturday at the Jesse Owens Invitational in Decatur, Alabama. Woodland will compete at the Great American Festival in Cary, North Carolina.
