Local teams lose region contests Friday night


Each of the five local high school basketball teams in action Friday night lost their final regular season games. Each will begin region tournament action next week.

MURRAY COUNTY 66, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 48

A disastrous third quarter doomed the Tigers Friday night in Chatsworth as Murray County topped Adairsville 66-48. Adairsville stayed close in the first half and only trailed 31-25 at the intermission, but the host Indians outscored the Tigers 23-7 in the third period on their way to an 18-point Region 6-AAA win.

Bronson Bowen and Haden Newport paced Murray with 25 and 23 points, respectively. Danarous Johnson led Adairsville with 12 points and Connor Crunkelton added 10 for the Tigers.

Murray County finished the regular season 12-13 overall and 7-9 in region games. Adairsville (8-17, 6-10) will the the 8-seed in next week’s region tournament.

MURRAY COUNTY 55, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 25

The Murray County girls extended a 22-14 halftime lead to 42-18 after three quarters Friday night to eventually defeat the visiting Lady Tigers, 55-25.

Allison Weaver led Murray County (10-15, 7-9) with 25 points.

Coriana McDaniel had seven points for Adairsville. Havyn Isaac and Nakiyah Washington finished with four points each. Adairsville (5-20, 2-14) begins next week’s Region 6-AAA tournament as an 8/9-seed and will open against Haralson County.

BOWDON 67, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS 56

The host Eagles led after one quarter 16-14, but Bowdon took control in the second quarter to take a 36-23 advantage by halftime and led 48-39 after three quarters.

Chris Parker poured in 35 points to lead the Red Devils.

Rayshawn Womack led Excel with 20 points. Evan Lee and Josiah Mosley followed with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Kalil Holley added nine and Brenden Quillin finished with two points.

Bowdon closed out the regular season with a 12-13 overall record and was 5-9 in Region 6-A.

Excel, who will host a region tournament game Monday night, completed the regular season 4-20 and was 1-13 in region play.

VILLA RICA 65, WOODLAND GIRLS 19 Villa Rica completed an undefeated 25-0 regular season Friday night with a 65-19 home win over Woodland.

Ranked No. 1 in Class AAAAA, Villa Rica will be the top-seed in next week’s Region 7-AAAAA tournament. Woodland finished the regular season with a 1-22 overall record and was 1-15 in region play.

VILLA RICA 70, WOODLAND BOYS 55

Villa Rica pulled away from Woodland in the third quarter Friday night by outscoring the visiting Wildcats 21-9 in the quarter on their way to a 15-point Region 7-AAAAA win. Villa Rica (11-13, 6-10) held leads of 15-13 after one quarter and 28-26 at the intermission.

Woodland (4-20, 1-15) will be the 9-seed in the region tournament. Villa Rica will be the 6-seed.
