  • Elite Athletes of the Week

    Elite Stone Supply, in conjunction with WBHF and Bartow Sports Zone, presents the ELITE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK. Each week, all five local schools will name an Elite Athlete of the Week and present the information on their honoree through Bartow Sports Zone and on 100.3FM and AM1450, WBHF in Cartersville. Recipients for the week ending September 17, 2016: Derrick Maxwell, Cass High School Rachel Parrott, Excel Christian Academy Wesley Thacker, Adairsville High School Madilyn Tuplin, Woodland High School Merritt Vance, Cartersville High School Derrick “Hammer” Maxwell is the Cass High School Elite Athlete of the Week. ​​ Maxwell, the son of Shawana and Derrick Maxwell, is a senior running back that has been part of the Colonels’ football program for four years. Maxwell’s physical toughness and leadership by example were on display this past Friday night at Doug Cochran Stadium where he carried the ball 30 times for 168 yards and both Cass touchdowns in a hard fought 14-12 Region 7-AAAAA homecoming victory over Hiram. Rachel Parrott is the Excel Christian Academy Elite Athlete of the Week. Parrott, a junior at Excel, is the daughter of Dwayne and Louise Parrott. She has attended ECA since kindergarten. She has played softball since 3rd grade, and has a passion for the game, which shows in her daily approach to games and practices. Parrott is a three year letter winner at catcher who also plays the corner infield positions. She has been a key member of Lady Eagles’ teams that have qualified for the state playoffs each of the past two years. In the midst of an outstanding season, Parrott is one of the region and county leaders in several statistical categories. She is tied for first in the region in homeruns, second in the region in RBIs, and second in the region in fielding percentage. She currently has a .436 batting average for the season. Excel softball coach, Micahel Adcock, nominated Parrott because of her work ethic and leadership qualities. Parrott is an active member of the FCA and serves as a mentor to students in the middle school. Rachel attends The Church at Liberty Square, where she is an active participant in the children’s ministry and Vacation Bible School. She enjoys playing with her teammates, several of whom she has played with since middle school, where they won their league championship. Her future plans include attending college to play softball and she plans to major in psychology. Wesley Thacker is the Elite Athlete of the Week for Adairsville High School. Thacker is a junior linebacker for the Tigers’ football team. He is the son of Wesley and Jacki Thacker. Thacker led the Tigers’ defense in their 48-34 victory over Ringgold. He was the team’s top tackler, recording nine solo tackles, two assists, and one pass break up. Madilyn Tuplin is the Elite Athlete of the Week for Woodland High School. Tuplin is a senior middle hitter and blocker for the Lady Cats’ volleyball team. The daughter of Glen and Pamela Tuplin, Madilyn is the team captain leading her squad in four statistical categories — including kills, receiving percentage, blocks, and serve percentage. Tuplin is an honor student and is a Woodland Scholar Athlete. Cartersville High School’s Elite Athlete of the Week is Merritt Vance. Vance, a junior, is a member of the Canes’ varsity competition cheerleading squad, varsity football cheerleading squad, and varsity soccer team. Breanna Betts, Cartersville High School cheerleading coach, praised Vance’s efforts. “Merritt is an outstanding cheerleader with a sense of contagious confidence both on and off the mat,” said Betts. “Her continuous, positive attitude always spreads throughout our team.” Vance, the daughter of Kyle and Alexis Vance, carries a 3.6 grade point average.     Results from Bartow County Recreation Department youth football for Tuesday, September 20, 2016. 10U BARTOW FALCONS 6, BARTOW BEARS 6 Jonathan Gough led the Falcons with 70 yards rushing and a touchdown. Defensively, the Falcons were led by Joshua Bishop with six tackles and an interception. Reece Alexander finished the night with five tackles for the Falcons. For the Bears, Jakeveon Porter led the way with 74 yards rushing. Isaiah Livsey finished the night with 43 yards rushing and Talen Nix had 29 yards and a touchdown. Defensively for the Bears, Zachary Wallace had six tackles and Logan Shrewsbury finished with four tackles. 10U BARTOW BUCS 31, BARTOW JETS 0 Offensively for the Bucs, Kendrick Price led the way with 73 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Zantavian Brown finished the night with 60 yards rushing and Devin Henderson garnered 38 yards rushing and a touchdown. Defensively, the Bucs were led by Kendrick Price and Kevin Henderson with seven tackles each. Devin Henderson totaled six tackles and had an interception return for a touchdown. Ethan Blome led the Jets' offense with 67 yards rushing. Defensively, Tyrek Hames finished the night with five tackles.   • Lady Canes volleyball splits road Area 5-AAAA matches

    Cartersville volleyball split a pair of Area 5-AAAA matches Tuesday night at Sandy Creek in Tyrone. The Lady Canes defeated LaGrange in a tough three-set match 25-13, 25-27, 25-11, but lost to the host Patriots of Sandy Creek in straight sets, 25-17, 25-17. Standout players for the Canes in the win over LaGrange included: Lauren Wenzell with 1 kill, 1 block, and 5 aces; Catie Heilman with 10 kills, 1 block, 2 digs, and 5 aces; Grace Hunter with 6 kills, 2 blocks, and 2 aces; Rebekah Stevens with 6 kills, 1 dig, and 6 aces; Anna Mathis with 8 digs; and Kameron Hendrix with 25 assists, 3 digs, and 3 aces. Standouts for the Lady Canes in the loss to Sandy Creek included: Rebekah Stevens with 3 kills; Catie Heilman with 6 kills, 5 digs, and 1 ace; Anna Mathis with 7 digs and 19 service receptions; and Kameron Hendrix with 10 assists and 1 ace. Cartersville, now 19-14 overall and 4-2 in Area 5-AAAA, travels to Pope Thursday to play the host Lady Greyhounds and Walker. They will also play in the Bartow County Championships Saturday at Woodland.

    CARTERSVILLE RECREATION DEPARTMENT 8U FOOTBALL SEPTEMBER 20 CANES GOLD 21, CANES SILVER 12 Hayden Freeland, Naiser Bennett, and Trenton Harris scored touchdowns of 12, 2, and 25 yards respectively for Canes Gold. Reid Ezell scored on runs of 2 and 7 yards for Canes Silver. CANES PURPLE 34, CANE WHITE 0 Harris Turner scored four touchdowns to lead Canes Purple to victory. Turner’s runs were 40, 45, 48, and 60 yards. Asa Mitcham added a 55-yard touchdown run. SEPTEMBER 19 10U FOOTBALL CANES GOLD 39, CANES WHITE 6 Kristian Lando scored four touchdowns on three runs of 40, 20, and 13 yards, plus an interception return for a score. Nathaniel Davis added a touchdown run for Canes Gold from 14 yards out. Cedric McClinic scored for Canes White on an eight yard run. CANES PURPLE 8, CANES BLACK 6 Kenny Brown scored for Canes Purple on a one yard run. Purple then added the extra point. Canes Black posted their score on a fumble recovery for touchdown.   • Tuesday's softball roundup: Woodland tops Hiram for key region win

    WOODLAND 6, HIRAM 1 Woodland posted three runs in the first inning and never trailed in a 6-1 defeat of Hiram Tuesday. The Region 7-AAAAA win held extra importance for the Lady Cats, who are battling for one of the final region playoff spots. Sarah Baynard was strong in the pitching circle for Woodland. She scattered three hits and three walks while allowing only a single earned run. Baynard struck out six for the complete game victory. Bella Carnes had three hits for Woodland. Brittney Cox had two hits and drove in two runs. Skylar Chappell added two RBIs with one hit. Jamison Kilgo, Jordan Duck, and Madgie Robinson also had hits. Hiram slipped to 7-9 overall and 5-7 in region play. Woodland (8-15, 4-7) moved one full game ahead of Cass for the final region playoff spot with the win and will entertain Paulding County Thursday at 5:55pm. The Lady Cats will honor their seniors at Thursday’s game. GORDON LEE 8, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 0 Excel was shutout at Gordon Lee Tuesday afternoon, 8-0. The Lady Eagles were limited to only two hits — one each by Rachel Parrott and Brighton McCollum. Hannah Lee (5 IP, 8R, 6ER, 10H, 2BB) suffered the pitching loss for Excel. Faith Alexander and Gracey Kruse combined for six hits and Kruse had five RBIs to lead the Lady Trojans’ attack. Canaan Burnett (4 IP, 0R, 1H, 6K, 0BB) earned the pitching victory. Janie Durham worked the final two innings in the pitching circle for Gordon Lee and allowed only one hit with two strikeouts. Excel (8-11) travels to Dalton to take on Christian Heritage Thursday. VILLA RICA 10, CASS 2 Three errors, a walk, and a hit batsman helped Villa Rica break open a 2-2 game with five runs in the bottom of the third inning. They did add one hit late in the frame, but scored seven times in the first three innings on only two hits. The Wildcats first two runs in the opening inning also came after a Cass error and a hit batsman. Payton Turner did the damage for the Wildcats with a double that drove home both runners to tie the game. Cass opened the game’s scoring and took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a single by Hope Elrod that was followed by a two-run homer by Sarah Moore. Villa Rica (15-5, 10-2) added a single run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to end the game Cass committed 5 errors in the loss — all in the first three innings. Elrod finished with two hits for Cass. Moore (2-run homer), Sierrah Gani, Sarah Fox, and Arianna Mustin had the other hits for the Lady Colonels. Moore (3.1 IP, 6R, 4ER, 5H, 4BB) and Mustin (1 IP, 4R, 0ER, 0H, 2BB) both worked in the pitching circle for Cass. The Lady Colonels (5-18, 3-8) host their senior night Thursday against East Paulding at 5:55pm. CHAPEL HILL 4, CARTERSVILLE 3 The Lady Canes challenged one of the Region 5-AAAA leaders until the final inning Tuesday night, but came up one run short at Chapel Hill, 4-3. Chapel Hill took a 3-0 lead through three innings, but the Cartersville roared back. The Lady Canes scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to knot the score, 3-3. Paris Poston started the inning with a single and Hannah Todd reached on a ground ball to third base. Lauren McElhaney followed by laying down a sacrifice, but all runners were safe on an error by the Panthers’ catcher. Groundouts by Presley Edwards and Cio Seigler forced home two runs and Madison McKinney tied the game with a single to centerfield. Chapel Hill (14-7, 9-1) scored the game winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Panthers got a single and a two-out double to put runners at second and third base. An intentional walk loaded the bases, before Bella Caricari coaxed an RBI base on balls and a 4-3 lead. Todd (6 IP, 4R, 2ER, 5H, 4BB, 3K) was tagged with the pitching loss. Kira Morgan (3.2 IP, 3R, 1ER, 5H, 2BB, 3K) started for the Lady Panthers, but Ashley Morgan (3.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 8K) picked up the pitching victory in relief. Molly Wilson and Tara Mathis added hits for Cartersville. Cartersville (12-10, 4-6) plays a region doubleheader Saturday at LaGrange. SONORAVILLE at ADAIRSVILLE Adairsville lost to Sonoraville, 8-0 in five innings. The Lady Phoenix scored all eight of their runs over the final three innings. Emily Collum and Morgan DeBoard managed the only Adairsville hits. Harleigh Chastain had three hits to lead Sonoraville (11-10, 8-5). Loren Harris and Natalie Burrow split the pitching duties for the Lady Tigers. They surrendered only two earned runs as Adairsville committed six errors in the contest. Adairsville (8-10, 5-7) hosts Calhoun Thursday in another Region 6-AAA matchup.

  • Local region high school softball standings

    The regular season for local high school softball teams will be winding down this week and next, so each team is involved in crucial games over that period. In Region 7-AAAAA, Woodland and Cass each have three region games remaining and are currently tied for the sixth and final region playoff spot. In Region 5-AAAA, Cartersville is looking to secure home field advantage for their region playoffs by finishing the regular season in the top four. Adairsville is in a similar situation in Region 6-AAA. The Lady Tigers are battling for a higher seed. The top four region playoff teams in 7-AAAAA, 5-AAAA, and 6-AAA will advance to the state playoffs. The format for qualifying for the state playoffs in Class A is different. Excel Christian Academy, currently rated No. 21 among Class A private schools by the most recent GHSA power ratings (released today), needs wins down the stretch to finish in the top 24 of those ratings to secure a state playoff berth.   • Lady Canes take on challenge of Rally High volleyball event

    Cartersville High School’s volleyball team participated this past weekend with 35 varsity teams and 27 junior varsity teams in the Rally Volleyball — Rally High Invitational Tournament at the LakePoint Champions Center in Emerson. The tournament featured round robin pool play followed by single-elimination playoffs. While the Lady Canes suffered some losses at the event, the experienced gained in playing some of the top high school programs in the state was beneficial as they continue to battle for a state playoff spot in Area 5-AAAA. Blessed Trinity captured the Varsity Gold Division at LakePoint with a 25-23, 25-20 straight sets victory over Harrison. On their way to the title, the Lady Titans also had elimination bracket wins over North Oconee, Dunwoody, and Etowah. Northgate from Newnan won the Silver Division, taking a three set victory in the finals over Kennesaw Mountain, 15-25, 25-20, and 15-13.   • Athletes Beyond Bartow: Beasley gets sack for Falcons; Gollhofer runner-up at Milwaukee Tennis Class

    Former Adairsville High School and Clemson University star, Vic Beasley collected the Atlanta Falcons' first sack of the 2016 season Sunday in a road victory over the Oakland Raiders. Beasley, who failed to record a tackle in the opener with Tampa Bay, finished with a pair of tackles and a sack in Atlanta's 35-28 victory. Also this past weekend, Cartersville resident Peyton Gollhofer finished as the women's singles runner-up at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. Her Ball State University team participated in the tournament along with host Marquette, University of Wisconsin, and Boise State. College football, cross country, volleyball, soccer, and tennis have hit full stride in their Fall 2016 seasons. NFL VIC BEASLEY — Atlanta Falcons (2nd season, LB, Clemson / Adairsville HS) . . . recorded two tackles and was credited with a sack in the Falcons’ 35-28 win over the Raiders at Oakland Coliseum Sunday. After recording just 19 sacks last season for the fewest in the NFL since 2009 and getting none in the opener, the Falcons got their first of the season against Raiders’ QB Derek Carr. Beasley forced Carr out of the pocket and Carr ran out of bounds for no gain, which officially counts as a sack. It was also the first sack allowed by Oakland this season. Ford now has 12 catches for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Targeted only once in each of the first three quarters, he had a 28-yard touchdown catch with 9:42 remaining in the fourth quarter. He made three more catches in the final period for 16, 6, and one yard. Charlotte (1-2) plays at Temple in Philadelphia on Saturday. In a field that included DI, DII, and DIII squads, and completing in their first 8K of the season, the Lynx finished fourth out of 17 teams. Memphis won the event followed by Central Arkansas and Harding. Austin Peay rounded out the top five. Fields was the top Rhodes finisher, placing fourth as he covered the course in an impressive 25:33. Rhodes returns to the course on October 1st at the Divison III Pre-National Meet in Louisville, Ky. ROGER HERRERA -- Reinhardt University (Sr., Cartersville HS) — Herrera ran a 32:09 8K Saturday at the University of North Georgia Invitational in Oakwood, finishing 51st and eighth for the Eagles team that finished fifth of ten schools. VOLLEYBALL KATIE O'CONNOR — Western Carolina University (Jr., MB, Cartersville HS) . . .eight kills and three blocks in a three set loss September 13 at Winthrop. O’Connor is now second on the team in kills, with 79, and first in blocks with 52. PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Soph., Laurel Springs Acad., Cartersville resident) finished as the womens singles runner-up Sept. 16-18 at the 2016 Milwaukee Tennis Classic where her Ball State team was competing with Wisconsin, Boise State, and Marquette. She defeated Michelle Linden of Wisconsin 6-3, 6-4 Friday and paired with doubles partner Audrey Berger to win 6-3 Saturday against their Wisconsin opponents. She also defeated Diana Tokar of Marquette, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Ball State is back in action October 7-9 at the Purdue Invitational.   • Canes remain No. 1 in Class AAAA; Colonels to clash with Kell for top spot in Region 7-AAAAA

    Cartersville remains the No. 1 team in Class AAAA in the rankings released today by Georgia High School Football Daily. The Canes (4-0) have now held the top spot for the entire season and are a unanimous No. 1 in the other Class AAAA published by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Georgia Sports Writers Association, Georgia Public Broadcasting, Score Atlanta, the Maxwell Ratings, and MaxPreps. Thomson (4-0) holds down the No. 2 spot, followed by Sandy Creek (3-1). The Patriots, members of Region 5-AAAA with Cartersville, will host the Purple Hurricanes October 14. A pair of private school, perrenial powers are in the fourth and fifth slots. Blessed Trinity (4-1) is ranked fourth and Woodward Academy is fifth. Both had impressive wins last Friday. Blessed Trinity blanked Hart County 43-0 and Woodward Academy shutout Marist 32-0. The remainder of the Class AAAA top ten includes No. 6 Mary Persons (3-2), No. 7 Burke County (4-0), No. 8 Oconee County (4-0), No. 9 Jefferson (3-1), and No. 10 Cairo (3-1). Roswell (3-0) is the highest rated team in Class AAAAAAA and has the highest national ratings. Unbeaten Mill Creek (4-0) is the team chasing the Hornets. Middle and south Georgia teams lead Class AAAAAA. Houston County (5-0) is No. 1, followed by second-ranked Northside-Warner Robins (5-0), third-ranked Valdosta (5-0), and fourth-ranked Lee County (4-0). Northgate (4-0) is fifth and Dalton (4-0) is ranked sixth in the classification. Cobb County’s Harrison Hoyas are also undefeated (4-0) and come in at No. 7. In Class AAAAA, Buford (2-1) is No. 1 where three of the top ten teams are in Region 7-AAAAA with Cass and Woodland. Region 7-AAAAA’s Carrollton (3-0) is ranked third, Kell (3-1) is fourth, and Rome (1-2) is ranked ninth. Greater Atlanta Christian (3-1) heads Class AAA followed by Pace Academy (3-1) and Cedar Grove (3-1). Nearby Calhoun (2-2) is ranked sixth in Class AAA. In Class AA, eight undefeated teams occupy the top eight spots with Fitzgerald (3-0) securing the No. 1 position. The other seven are Benedictine (4-0), Brooks County (3-0), Jefferson County (4-0), Callaway (4-0), Rabun County (2-0), and Model (4-0). The top ranked Class A Private team is Eagle’s Landing Christian (4-0). Darlington is 3-1 and No. 6 in the classification. Commerce (3-0) is the top-ranked team among Class A Public schools.   • Lady Canes sweep Troup; Cass drops pair at SCORE tourney; Lady Tigers edged in region matchup

    CARTERSVILLE 8-12, TROUP COUNTY 2-0 The Lady Canes swept a home Region 5-AAAA doubleheader Saturday with Troup County, winning 8-2 and 12-0. Cartersville pitcher Hannah Todd (7 IP, 2R, 1ER, 6H, 2BB, 12K) struck out a dozen in the Game 1 victory. Colbi Ballard (4 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 4K) allowed only one hit in her four inning shutout in Game 2. Presley Edwards had a perfect day at the plate going 4-for-4 in the doubleheader. She scored two runs, drove in two, and smacked a pair of doubles. Paris Poston was 4-for-6, scored five runs, and drove in a run. Lauren McElhaney finished the day 4-for-7 with a double and three RBIs. Allie Jackson was 2-for-5 and scored twice. Molly Wilson went 2-for-6, scored a run and drove in one. Ballard was 2-for-3 with a double, scored a run, and added two RBIs. Madison McKinney was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Todd (2 RBIs), Cio Seigler (RBI), and Tara Mathis (RBI) had the other Lady Canes’ hits. Hope Short and Macee Cole contributed with two runs scored each. Cartersville (12-9, 4-5 in Region 5-AAAA) plays at Chapel Hill Tuesday at 5:55pm and will play another region doubleheader next Saturday at LaGrange beginning at 11am. DALTON 7, CASS 2 In their early game Saturday at the SCORE International Tournament, the Lady Colonels fell to Dalton, 7-2. Dalton did the majority of their damage in the top of the third, scoring five runs to take a 6-0 lead. Arianna Mustin (3 IP, 6ER, 5H, 1BB, 3K) and Haley Owens (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB) split the Cass pitching duties. Sierrah Gani had two hits for Cass in the loss. Hope Elrod, Sarah Fox, and Sarah Moore (RBI) added one hit each. SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 7, CASS 2 In the Lady Colonels second game of the day at the SCORE International Tournament Saturday, Cass fell to Southeast Whitfield 7-2. Sarah Moore (2 IP, 4R, 3ER, 4H, 3BB, 2K) and Arianna Mustin (3 IP, 3R, 2ER, 5H, 2BB, 2K) split the pitching duties for Cass. Hope Elrod and Sarah Fox (RBI) had two hits each for the Lady Colonels. Moore (RBI, double) and Taylor Queen had the other Cass hits. Cass (5-17, 3-7 in 7-AAAAA) plays region games at Villa Rica Tuesday at 5:55pm, at East Paulding Thursday at 5:55pm, and will host Carrollton Saturday (Sept. 24) at 12:30pm. HARALSON CO. 2, ADAIRSVILLE 1 The Lady Tigers were edged by Haralson County Thursday evening in a Region 6-AAA matchup, 2-1. Loren Harris went the distance for Adairsville in the pitching circle and allowed only one earned run, but suffered the one-run loss. Harris scattered six hits and two walks while striking out six. Emily Collum had two hits, including a double, and scored the Lady Tigers’ run to lead the offense. Bailey Robinson drove in Collum with one hit. Harris, Morgan DeBoard, and Breanna Wilson had the other Adairsville hits. Adairsville (7-8, 5-6 in 6-AAA) has region games at Sonoraville Tuesday and at Calhoun Thursday.

  • Tigers, Colonels, Canes all win; Woodland suffers shutout

    ADAIRSVILLE 48, RINGGOLD 34 Roger Redd threw three touchdown passes, Tyler Riley and Travon Branch returned kickoffs for touchdowns, and Branch and Christian Steele both rushed for over 100 yards each as Adairsville defeated visiting Ringgold 48-34. Redd (photo) had touchdown passes to Ethan Belcher (23 yards), Branch (31 yards), and Bryce Burgess (9 yards). Riley’s kickoff return gave was 84 yards to give Adairsville a 14-7 lead in the first quarter. Branch, who also had a 42-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter, returned a kickoff 90 yards to open the second half and give Adairsville a 34-27 lead. Mason Boswell scored Adairsville’s final touchdown on a 3-yard run with 0:38 remaining. Ringgold quarterback Cole Kibler accounted for three touchdowns. He connected with Drake Starks on a 52-yard pass in the first quarter; fumbled at the goal line after a 9-yard run but the ball was recovered by teammate Nathan Camp for a touchdown late in the second quarter; and the sophomore tied the game 34-34 on a 15-yard run late in the third quarter. Ty Jones had an 11-yard touchdown run and Dee King added a 29-yard scoring run for Ringgold. Adairsville (1-3) travels to Murray County (3-1) next Friday for both teams final game before beginning sub-region play the following week. CASS 14, HIRAM 12 Derrick Maxwell scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and the Colonels’ defense held off the visiting Hornets for a 14-12 Region 7-AAAAA and homecoming victory. The Cass offense doubled the yardage of Hiram in the first half, but only led 7-0 due to pair of turnovers. Maxwell (photo), who rushed for 159 yards in the contest, scored his second touchdown to give the Colonels a 14-0 lead, but Hiram would challenge the outcome in the fourth quarter. Hiram’s Marcel Murray scored on an 83-yard touchdown run to cut the Colonels’ lead to 14-6 on the first play of the final period, but the Hornets failed on the extra point kick. Hiram later scored on a 7-yard pass play from Nate Presnel to David Wearing to set up a potential game-tying two-point conversion play with just under four minutes remaining. Cass’ Colby Williams batted away a pass attempt on the two-point attempt, however, and the Colonels retained their 14-12 lead. Hiram got the ball back one last time at their own 38 and moved quickly to midfield with a pass reception with only seconds remaining. The Cass defense would escape, however, with a two-point victory after halting the Hornets. Hiram fell to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in Region 7-AAAAA with the loss. Cass (3-1, 2-0 in 7-AAAAA) will host highly ranked Kell next Friday at 7:30pm at Doug Cochran Stadium. The Longhorns (4-1, 2-0 in 7-AAAAA) defeated Paulding County Friday night, 35-7. CARTERSVILLE 38, HAPEVILLE CHARTER 7 Cartersville took a 14-0 lead early on a 28-yard touchdown reception by Avery Showell from Trevor Lawrence (photo) and a 50-yard punt return by Antoine Jefferson. The visiting Hornets narrowed lead to 14-7 on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Hajj-Malik Williams to Rory Starkey, before the Canes’ Jonathan Cruz nailed a 25-yard field goal for a 17-7 lead. Lawrence later hit Jefferson for a 17-yard touchdown to give the Canes a 24-7 lead at the intermission. Lawrence connected with Showell for a 33-yard touchdown pass on the Canes’ first possession of the second half and Lawrence tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Horton with 1:17 remaining in the third quarter for a 38-7 lead. Cartersville (4-0) opens Region 5-AAAA play next Friday at Cedartown. The Bulldogs (3-1) were idle Friday, but have won three straight over Pepperell, Gilmer, and Rockmart. Their loss was the season opener at Piedmont, AL. VILLA RICA 41, WOODLAND 0 Villa Rica posted 27 first half points on their way to a 41-0 shutout of visiting Woodland. Villa Rica improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland remains winless in four games. Woodland hosts Carrollton next Friday at 7:30pm. Carrollton (3-0, 1-0 in 7-AAAAA) defeated East Paulding Friday night, 45-7 and has wins over Riverdale and Newnan.
