  • Cartersville girls and boys track and field teams are region runners-up

    April 24, 2024 The Cartersville High track and field teams finished second this week at the Region 7-5A championships. The Cartersville boys finished 14 points behind Calhoun in the final standings. Woodland was third and the Cass boys were fifth. The Lady Canes finished 48 points behind Calhoun with Woodland third and the Cass girls fourth. The top four in each event have advanced to the State Sectionals on Saturday, May 4 at Union Grove High School in McDonough.   • Lady Chargers swept by Chattanooga State

    April 24, 2024 Georgia Highlands College softball lost both games of a home doubleheader Wednesday, falling to Chattanooga State 7-0 and 11-2. The wins by the Tigers completed a four-game, home-and-home sweep this week over the Chargers. Chatt State pitchers limited Georgia Highlands to only five hits in the doubleheader. Avrey Fisher had two hits including a double and one RBI. Ally Graden (double, RBI), Haylee Dishmon, and Cailey Barnett (double) added one hit on the day. Grace Kendrick suffered the Game 1 pitching loss. Jaycee Hand was the pitching loser in Game 2. Hayden Joyner worked three scoreless innings in the circle in Game 1. Chattanooga State improved to 37-11 for the season. Georgia Highlands (14-31) hosts a conference doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. with Gordon State College.

  • Colonels power past Panthers, advance to Elite Eight

    April 24, 2024 The Cass boys’ soccer team built a 3-1 lead in the first half Wednesday night at Cochran Stadium and cruised in the second half to a 7-1 win over Chapel Hill in the Sweet Sixteen round of the GHSA Class 5A state playoffs. Melvin Velasquez put the Colonels on the scoreboard in the 18th minute off a feed from Edgar Abeja. He followed 16 minutes later with a second goal off an assist from Camden Hillhouse. Just before the half, Velasquez put Cass up 3-1 off a pass from Alex Hernandez. One minute into the second half, Hillhouse scored the first of four second-half goals for Cass off an assist by Mason Madrid. Five minutes later, Hillhouse assisted Christian Villela to give the Colonels a 5-1 lead. Velasquez added his fourth goal of the night in the 60th minute off a feed from JJ Grimaldo and Karter Berdnick finished off the Cass scoring with a goal in the 77th minute with an assist going to Sergio Ochoa. The Panthers' season ends with a 12-5-1 record. Cass (14-3-1) will hit the road for the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs next Tuesday (April 30). The Colonels will play at Tucker (8-10-2). The Tigers won Region 4-5A and defeated Northgate on Wednesday night, 2-1.

Arlington has started the season 0-4 and hosts the San Antonio Brahmas on Saturday night. BASKETBALL SUPER LEAGUE A.J. MOSBY, JR. — Sudbury Five (6th-yr. pro; Alcorn State; Cartersville HS) … averaged 25 points, 3.5 steals, five assists, and four rebounds in a three-game series last week at the Newfoundland Rogues. The Five dropped two of the three games and have fallen to fifth place with a 17-13 record. Sudbury plays at the KW titans on Saturday night and at the Windsor Express on Sunday afternoon. MiLB MASON BARNETT — Northwest Arkansas Naturals (3rd-yr. pro; Kansas City Royals Double-A affiliate; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … made a five inning start and grabbed his first pitching win of the season this past Thursday in a 7-1 victory over the Midland Rockhounds. The right-handed pitcher allowed just one earned run on two hits and one walk while striking out ten. The Naturals (6-8) have a six-game series on Tuesday through Sunday at the Tulsa Drillers. LOGAN MARTIN — Columbia Fireflies (2nd-yr. pro; Kansas City Royals Single-A affiliate; Kentucky; Cartersville HS) …  earned a four-inning save on Tuesday as the Fireflies blanked the visiting Augusta GreenJackets 8-0. Martin allowed no runs on two hits and one walk. He struck out four. The Columbia/Augusta series continues through Sunday. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Somerset Patriots (7th-yr. pro; NY Yankees Double-A affiliate; Cartersville HS) … in four home starts last week against Hartford, he was 3-for-13 with one walk and one RBI in four home starts last week at second base. PGA CHAMPIONS TOUR JASON BOHN — Champions Senior Tour (Acworth, 51, 32-yr. pro; Cartersville CC member) … carded an opening round 66 last Friday but after a Saturday rainout dropped to a tie for 48th on Sunday with a 76 at the Invited Celebrity Classic in Irving, Texas. TENNIS EMILY BUSH — Young Harris College (So., Cartersville HS) … won her Line 2 singles match 6-3, 6-2 but dropped a Line 1 doubles set with partner Meghna Mallath on Monday (April 15) as the Mountain Lions won at the University of North Greenville 5-2. This past Saturday, Bush won her Line 2 singles match 6-3, 6-2 in YHC’s 7-0 win over Chowan University. EMILY SURCEY — Samford University (Jr., Cass HS) … in action at the Southern Conference Championship Tournament in Chattanooga, Surcey won singles matches at Line 2 as the Bulldogs beat Chattanooga 4-1 but lost to Furman. She was 1-1 in doubles sets with partner  Grace Keller. Samford’s season ends with a 10-12 record. BRYCE VAN ORDER — Piedmont University (Sr., Woodland HS) … won his Line 2 singles match 6-2, 6-1 and won a Line 3 doubles set with partner Kody Dills as the Lions blanked visiting Belhaven University, 9-0. Piedmont (18-6) will play in the Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament in Chattanooga on Thursday through Saturday. TRACK AND FIELD STEPHEN SMITH — Kennesaw State University (Sr., Cass HS) … placed eighth in the pole vault competition at the University of Kentucky Jim Green Invitational. Smith cleared 15 feet, 3-¾ inches. The Owls head to the University of North Florida East Coast Relays in Jacksonville on Friday and Saturday. ERIC TOVIAVE — Belmont University (So., Cartersville HS) … placed 25th in the 400 meter hurdles (55.90) at the Georgia Tech Invitational this past weekend. The Bruins are set to compete at the Music City Challenge on Friday and Saturday. GOLF ANDERSON McCARY — Birmingham Southern College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … placed 87th with rounds of 88-88 as the Panthers finished 18th of 18 teams at the Memphis, Tennessee Cochran Collegiate. HAYLEE DISHMON — Georgia Highlands College (Fr., Cass HS) …  in the Chargers’ four games last week, Dishmon was 6-for-13 at the plate with one RBI. She scored four runs and stole seven bases. GHC lost two games to ABAC and split a doubleheader with South Georgia State. ELLIOTT EASTIN — Covenant College (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) … pitched two inning of relief on Tuesday, April 16 in a 7-5 home win over Sewanee. He allowed three earned runs on three hits and recorded one strikeout. He also had one pinch-hitting appearance last Saturday in a 6-5 home loss to Maryville College (Tenn.). The Scots (14-23, 5-10) have a three-game conference series at Berea College (Ky.) on May 2 and 3. COLIN EATON — Gordon State College (So., Cartersville HS) … made a four-inning pitching start with no decision last Saturday at home in an eventual 9-6 win over ABAC. Eaton yielded five runs (one earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts. The Highlanders (28-19, 14-7 GCAA) host South Georgia State on Thursday and visit Georgia Highlands College on Saturday. KENNY JINKS — Wheeling University (R-Sr., Woodland HS) … made a six-inning start last Saturday and picked up the pitching win in an 18-7 victory at Fairmont State University. Jinks, now 4-3, gave up five earned runs on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts. COLT McKIBBEN — Lee University (So., Cartersville HS) … struggled in a brief start at the University of North Georgia on April 16 yielding five earned runs on three walks and two hits. He faced only seven batters and was tagged with the loss in a 21-2 defeat. The Flames (34-12, 21-6) visit the Universith of West Florida on Friday and Saturday for a three-game series. SAM MELTON — Rockingham CC (So., Cartersville HS) … went 1-for-3 with a double and scored one run in a three-game home-and-home series with Surry CC. He had one at-bat in each game. Rockingham (19-29, 9-14) has a home doubleheader on Saturday with New River CC. DREW ROTHSCHILD — Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (So., Cartersville HS) … went 8-for-12 including two home runs, a double, and five walks in four games last week with Gordon State College. He also scored five runs. The Stallions (17-25, 9-11 GCAA) visit Andrew College on Thursday and play at South Georgia State College on Saturday. TREY SCOTT — Alabama A&M University (Jr., Cass HS) … made pitching appearances at home against Faulkner University and on the road at Florida A&M last week totaling six innings. Scott allowed four earned runs on three hits and six walks. He struck out seven. He was credited with the pitching win in the Bulldogs’ 10-3 win over Faulkner. AAMU (9-30, 5-13 SWAC) hosts Bethune-Cookman in a three-game conference series on Friday through Sunday. PHILIP SCHILTZ — Coastal Alabama South CC (Fr., Cartersville HS) … tossed a six-inning, complete-game in the Coyotes’ 9-0 win this past Saturday at Shelton State CC. He struck out four and walked one facing 23 batters. Coastal South (23-21, 20-8 ACCC) plays a home-and-home four-game series with Snead State CC on Thursday and Saturday. SCOTTY SMITH — Covenant College (Jr., Woodland HS) … made a strong 7-⅔ inning start at home last Saturday but received no decision as the Scots fell to Maryville College (Tenn.) 6-5. Scott allowed three earned runs (five total) on six hits, two walks, and one hit batsman facing 36 batters. Covenant (14-23, 5-10 Collegiate Conference of the South) has the weekend off before traveling to Berea College (Ky.) next Thursday and Friday for a three-game series. STEVEN SPELL — Young Harris College (Grad student, Cass HS) … in five games last week, Spell was 4-for-19 at the plate with a double, two walks, two sac flies, and five RBIs. The Mountain Lions, who have won 12 straight and are ranked No. 10 nationally, had wins over Carson-Newman, Tuisculum, and a three-game sweep of Emmanuel University. YHC (37-9, 21-6 Conference Carolinas) closes out the regular season schedule on Friday and Saturday with three games at Belmont Abbey College. KADEN STEPHENSON — Piedmont University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … was 0-for-2 in pinch hitting appearances last week for the Lions. Piedmont (22-12, 9-3 CCS) has a three-game series at home this weekend with Huntingdon College. PRESTON WELCHEL — Cumberland University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … in four games last week, Welchel was 5-for-14 at the plate with a homer, three walks, four runs scored, and six RBIs. The Phoenix beat Milligan University but lost three to 4th-ranked University of the Cumberlands. CU (21-25, 4-11 Mid-South Conference) hosts Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) on Friday and Saturday for a three-game conference series. COHEN WILBANKS — Georgia Gwinnett College (Jr., Cartersville HS) … made three starts and four game appearances last week as the NAIA 3rd-ranked Grizzlies went 4-0. Wilbanks was 5-for-10 at the plate and drove in nine runs with five doubles and three walks raising his season batting average to .385. GGC (39-6, 5-0 Continental Athletic Conference) hosts three games with Fisher College and University on Friday and Saturday. JORDAN WILKIE — Augusta University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … saw action defensively at first base this past Friday in a 9-8 win at Georgia Southwestern State. The Jaguars (23-22, 12-12 Peach Belt Conference) visit St. Augustine for a three-game conference series at Flagler College on Friday through Sunday.

  • Wildcats and Canes advance to the Sweet Sixteen; Tigers and Colonels lose in first round

    April 23, 2024 Tuesday night’s first-round action in the GHSA baseball state playoffs saw two local teams sweep doubleheaders to advance to the second round while two teams were eliminated. GAME ONE: CARTERSVILLE 11, CHATTAHOOCHEE 7 A wild first inning settled into more of a matchup of pitchers in the middle innings Tuesday night in the first game of the Canes’ and Cougars’ first-round best-of-three state playoff series. Chattahoochee mixed in four hits with a walk, a hit batsman, and two Canes’ errors to grab a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning but Cartersville responded quickly. In the bottom of the first, the Hurricanes posted six runs of their own. Caleb Daniel and Cole Crawford hit two-run homers and Tristan McKibben provided a run-scoring single in a five-hit frame. In the second inning, Luke Miller scored on Daniel’s double for a 7-6 Cartersville lead. One out later, Daniel scored when Cameron Cochran reached on a Cougars’ error. Up 8-6, Canes’ pitcher Sawyer Wilson settled in to earn the win. He worked into the sixth inning allowing seven runs (three earned) on 10 hits and one walk. Wilson fanned eight. Andrew Purdy took the mound to retire the final four outs by strikeout in the sixth and seventh innings. Miller finished with three hits in the leadoff spot including a double. Daniel had three RBIs with a homer and a double. Cochran (RBI), Purdy, McKibben (RBI), Crawford (two-run HR), Julez Pratt (RBI), and Thomas Peters added one hit as the Canes totaled eleven safeties. GAME TWO: CARTERSVILLE 5, CHATTAHOOCHEE 2 Tristan McKibben, Cole Crawford, and Cameron Cochran combined for six of the Canes’ seven hits; three RBIs; and three of the team’s five runs to help lead Cartersville to a 5-2 win and a series sweep of Chattahoochee. With two hits and one RBI each, the five-, seven-, and eight-hole hitters accounted for most of the Canes’ offense in the series-clinching win. Andrew Purdy added a hit and one RBI. Crawford started the Canes’ third inning with a solo home run. Purdy and Cochran added RBI hits later in the frame. Aidan Larkin drove in a run with a sac fly in the fourth inning and McKibben added the Hurricanes’ fifth run in the fifth with a run-producing single. Nate Russell went five innings to secure the pitching win. He allowed one earned run on four hits and two walks. Russell struck out seven. Logan Shrewsbury retired the final six outs on the mound. He allowed one, unearned run on one hit with no walks and three strikeouts. The Cougars finish their year with an 11-19 mark. No. 1-ranked Cartersville (25-5) will host a Sweet Sixteen round best-of-three series beginning on Monday against Jefferson. The Dragons swept Midtown in the first round. Cartersville reaches the Sweet Sixteen for the sixth consecutive season and the 27th time in the last 28 seasons. GAME ONE: WOODLAND 2, CAMBRIDGE 1 Woodland pitchers Zach Lambert and Ayden Ray combined for a dozen strikeouts and limited the visiting Bears to a single run in the top of the seventh inning to win the first game of their best-of-three series, 2-1. The game went 4-½ innings scoreless before Wildcats’ courtesy runner Jonathan Ryan scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth and Connor Stermer singled home Jake Clowers’ courtesy runner — Austin Daves — in the bottom of the sixth for a 2-0 lead. The Bears scored a run in the top of the seventh on a pair of singles and had the potential tying runner at third base when Ray recorded his second strikeout of the final frame to end the game. Stermer had two of Woodland’s three hits in the opener. Clowers had the other single. GAME TWO: WOODLAND 6, CAMBRIDGE 5 Trailing 5-1 heading to their final at-bat in Game Two, the Wildcats rallied for a 6-5 win and won their first-round series with Cambridge. Playing as the visiting team in the nightcap, Woodland loaded the bases with three walks in the top of the seventh inning. After two outs, Jonathan Ryan scored on a wild pitch and Logan Bentley singled home a run with an infield hit to cut the Bears’ lead to 5-3. A walk to the next batter loaded the bases again to set up a bases-clearing three-run triple by Lucas Baker. Ayden Ray took the mound for the Wildcats in the bottom of the seventh and struck out two in a scoreless frame to earn his second save of the night. Baker collected the pitching win by retiring the final two outs in the sixth. Austin Daves (4 IP, 4ER, 4H, 1BB, 1K) made the Wildcats’ start and JD Trail (1.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 3BB) also pitched in relief. Ray (double) had two hits in Game Two. Baker (triple, three RBIs), Jake Clowers (RBI), Mason Williams, and Bentley (RBI) added one hit. The Bears’ season ends with a 16-16 record. Woodland (17-13) advances to the Sweet Sixteen round next Monday and Tuesday for a best-of-three series at Region 8-5A champion Loganville. GAME ONE: PICKENS 10, ADAIRSVILLE 2 The 2nd-ranked Dragons started quickly and rattled off 13 hits Tuesday night in the first game of their best-of-three first-round state playoff series to beat visiting Adairsville, 10-2. Pickens scored at least one run in five of their six offensive frames. The Dragons led 5-0 through two innings and never trailed. Peyton Bowen singled home an Adairsville run in the top of the third inning and the Tigers scored a second run in the top of the fourth on a fielder’s choice bunt after loading the bases. McCayden Hufstetler (1 IP, 4R, 0ER, 4H, 1BB) made the pitching start for Adairsville and was saddled with the loss. Hudson Parr (5 IP, 6R, 4ER, 9H, 1BB, 1K) entered in the second inning and finished the game on the mound for the Tigers. Jack Nelson (double), Ryan Farr (double), Hayden Blalock (RBI), Landon O’Neal, Jarrett Scott, and Bowen (RBI) contributed one hit each for Adairsville. GAME TWO: PICKENS 5, ADAIRSVILLE 4 (8 inn.) The Tigers carried a 4-3 lead to the seventh inning in the second game Tuesday night in Jasper but the Dragons pushed across a run in the seventh to send the game to extra innings and scored the deciding run in the eighth. Playing as the home team in Game Two, Adairsville trailed 3-0 early before P.J. Weeks singled home two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Tigers took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Jarrett Scott and an RBI double by Jack Nelson. Nelson (6.1 IP, 3ER, 4H, 6BB, 6K) started on the mound for Adairsville and pitched into the seventh inning. Ryan Farr (1 IP, 2R, 0ER, 1H, 1BB) was charged with the tough-luck loss but both runs against him were unearned. Kaiden Coker (0.2 IP, 1BB) retired the final two outs in the eighth inning. Scott and Nelson produced two hits and one RBI for the Tigers. Weeks (two RBIs), Farr, and Harrison Cole added one hit. The Dragons (27-5) advance to the Sweet Sixteen round and will host a best-of-three series with Hebron Christian beginning next Monday. Adairsville has its year end with a 15-11 mark. GAME ONE:  KELL 5, CASS 3 The Colonels scored twice in the top of the first inning for an early 2-0 lead but the host Longhorns answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning and held the lead the rest of the way in the first game of this first round, best-of-three series. Kell added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 5-2 advantage. Cass scored a run in the top of the seventh on hits by Chase Tatum and Hunter Lovett, but the late threat ended with a pop-out. The Colonels outhit the Longhorns nine to six but came up short on the scoreboard. Lovett (4 IP, 4ER, 5H, 1BB, 4K) suffered the pitching loss. GAME TWO:  KELL 17, CASS 1 The 10th-ranked Longhorns dominated the second game of Tuesday night’s doubleheader and completed a first-round playoff sweep of visiting Cass with a 17-1 win. Kell plated eight runs in the second inning to build a 9-0 lead and cruised to a five-inning victory. The Colonels managed only one hit in the contest — a fifth-inning single by Connor Jenkins. Kell pitchers David McKechnie and Cooper Moreno combined for seven strikeouts. The Longhorns improved to 22-10 and will advance to the Class 5A Sweet Sixteen round where they will host Eastside or visit 3rd-ranked Villa Rica. Those two teams split their doubleheader on Tuesday and will play a deciding third game on Wednesday. The Colonels’ season ends with a 13-18 record.

    April 23, 2024 A big seven-run fourth inning broke open a 1-1 game and lifted Georgia Highlands baseball to an 11-5 road win on Tuesday at Abraham Baldwin. Five singles, two walks, a hit batsman, and a solo home run produced the Chargers’ runs in the breakout frame. GHC outhit the Stallions sixteen to four in the victory. Six pitchers toed the rubber for the Chargers. Kyle Stephenson (3 IP, 2R, 0ER, 0H, 4BB), Brodie Chestnutt (1 IP), Logan Spivey (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K), Oliver Wood (2 IP, 0R, 1H), Andrew Arnold (1 IP, 1ER, 0H, 1BB, 2K), and Reece Robertson (1 IP, 1ER, 2H) all pitched. Barrett Eldridge led Georgia Highlands with four hits including a solo home run and four RBIs. Clay Wiesen (double, RBI) and Gray Wilson followed with three hits. Grayson Godbee finished with two hits including a double. Ryan Wideman (double, two RBIs), Will Cawthon (RBI), Ryan Martin (RBI), and CJ Blackwell (RBI) added one hit. ABAC slipped to 17-26 overall and 9-12 in GCAA play. The Chargers (44-7, 16-5) lead Gordon College by 2-½ games in the conference standings with three games remaining. They will host East Georgia on Thursday and the Gordon College Highlanders on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 2 p.m. starts.

  • Lady Chargers drop two at Chattanooga State

    April 22, 2024 The Georgia Highlands softball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader Monday afternoon at Chattanooga State CC, falling 11-3 and 10-2. In the opener, the Chargers pulled into a 3-3 tie in the top of the third inning, but the Tigers posted eight runs over the next three frames to pull away. In Game 2, Chatt State pulled ahead 5-2 in the third inning and added five more runs in the next two frames to close out the victory. For GHC, Avrey Fisher had three hits including a solo home run and a double. Hannah Mounce finished with a homer, a double, and four RBIs. Haylee Dishmon and Chloe Fowler also had two hits in the doubleheader. Jaycie Hand (4.1 IP, 11R, 8ER, 11H, 1BB, 1K) was the losing pitcher in the opener. Hayden Joyner (4 IP, 7R, 3ER, 6H, 1BB) took the second loss in the circle. Grace Kendrick (0.2 IP, 3R, 2ER, 3H, 1K) also pitched. Chattanooga State improved to 33-11 on the season. Georgia Highlands (14-29) will host a doubleheader with the Tigers on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

  • Cartersville golf team wins Class 5A, Area 3 title

    April 22, 2024 L-R: Coach Chad Murray, Reid Lowry, Carter Rice, Noah Pogue, Blake Lutjens, Bodie Brumlow, Owen Dunn, and Andrew Lutjens The Cartersville High boys golf team won the 12-team Class 5A Area 3 Championship held Monday at Fields Ferry Golf Club in Calhoun. The Canes fired a 308 team total and automatically qualified for the May 20-21 Class 5A State Championship Tournament at the par-72, 6655-yard Okefenokee Country Club in Blackshear. The top four counting scores for the Hurricanes in their Area win were: Bodie Brumlow 72, Reid Lowry 77, Andrew Lutjens 79, and Noah Pogue 80.
