Athletes Beyond Bartow: Former Woodland star and current NAIA All-American, Wimpy leads Eagles

 

Former Woodland High School standout, Randi Wimpy (photo), highlights this group of 'Athletes Beyond Bartow' softball players. Wimpy leads the Reinhardt University Eagles offensively through the first dozen games in 2016.

 

Wimpy was a National Fastpitch Coaches Association NAIA All-American last season and is off to another impressive start.

SOFTBALL

 

BETHANY BALLARD — Armstrong State University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . catcher, has appeared in six games for the Pirates and has a double (.200) with a pair of RBI. ASU is 14-6 on the season and plays a doubleheader at Fort Valley State March 5 before opening Peach Belt Conference play March 12 by hosting defending NCAA D-II national champions, University of North Georgia.

 

SYDNEY FLOWERS — Reinhardt University (Jr., Woodland HS) . . . the Eagles’ third baseman went 5-for-10 in a pair of doubleheaders with Rio Grande (OH) and Pikeville (KY) Feb. 26-27. Flowers also drove in four runs in those four games. She has a .294 batting average and has started 10 games. Reinhardt (8-4) will face Faulkner, seventh-ranked Mobile, 23rd-ranked Lindenwood University-Belleville, and Concordia (MI) in the Gulf Shores Invitational March 4-6.

 

LACEY FRITZ — Southeastern Louisiana University (Jr., Woodland HS) . . . had a pinch hitting appearance in a 4-2 win over Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne Feb. 27. Fritz has appeared in 10 games, starting four. The Lions were 3-3 for the week also defeating Memphis and Jackson State. The losses were to Mississippi State, Southern Miss, and Baylor in the Gulfport Invitational. Southeastern (12-4) hosts Louisiana Tech March 2 and hosts University of Texas-Arlington in a three game series March 5-6.

 

HUNTER IRVIN — Reinhardt University (Fr., Cartersville HS) . . . made a pair of appearances Feb. 27 in a doubleheader with University of Pikeville (KY). She scored a run and drew a pair of walks. Irvin has a .250 batting average in four at bats with two RBI. The Lady Eagles play in the Gulf Shores Invitational March 4-6 where they will face Faulkner, seventh-ranked Mobile, 23rd-ranked Lindenwood University-Belleville, and Concordia (MI).

 

MALLORY JACKSON — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., Woodland HS) . . .  went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and a pair of walks in a pair of appearances vs. Darton State CC Feb. 28 as the Chargers split a doubleheader.  In 25 games, Jackson is hitting .185 with two homeruns and 12 RBI. GHC is 11-18 overall and 1-1 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. The Chargers host USC Salkehatchie March 1 and East Georgia CC in a GCAA conference doubleheader Sat. March 5.

 

ASHLEY JORDAN — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., Woodland HS) . . . hitting .329 with 12 RBI and four stolen bases through 29 games. Defensively, Jordan has a .953 fielding percentage in 43 chances. The Chargers are 11-18 overall and 1-1 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. They host USC Salkehatchie March 1 and East Georgia in a GCAA conference series Sat. March 5.

 

KAILAH RAIN — Embry-Riddle University (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . went 2-for-4 with a double in the opener of a three-game series with Florida Tech Feb. 26. Rain drove in two runs, scored a run, and stole a base in the win. She then went 1-for-3 and doubled in Game 1 of a doubleheader with Florida Tech Feb. 27, but ERU lost both games. Rain has a .341 batting average with five RBI, starting all 14 games for the Eagles in center field. She has not committed an error in 14 defensive chances and has two outfield assists. ERU (9-5 overall, 1-5 in the SSC) hosts Concordia College (MN) in a doubleheader Feb. 29; Ferris State (MI) in another doubleheader March 2; and hosts a Sunshine State Conference three game series with Florida Southern March 4-5.

 

TAYLOR WEEKS — Reinhardt University (Jr., Adairsville HS) . . . collected four hits and four RBI with a walk in a pair of doubleheaders with Rio Grande (OH) and University of Pikeville (KY) Feb. 26-27. The Eagles won three of four games and improved to 8-4 on the season. Weeks has a .200 batting average with seven RBI and a stolen base in 12 starts. RU plays in the Gulf Shores Invitational March 4-6 where they will face Faulkner, seventh-ranked Mobile, 23rd-ranked Lindenwood University-Belleville, and Concordia (MI).

 

RANDI WIMPY — Reinhardt University (Sr., Woodland HS) . . . went 8-for-14 in a pair of doubleheaders with Rio Grande (OH) University and University of Pikeville (KY) Feb. 26-27.  The Eagles won three of four games and improved to 8-4 on the season. Wimple, an NAIA All-American catcher as a junior, has a .487 batting average that includes nine extra base hits, a pair of homeruns, and 12 RBI in a dozen games. She also has a .969 fielding percentage in 65 chances. RU plays in the Gulf Shores Invitational March 4-6 where they will face Faulkner, seventh-ranked Mobile, 23rd-ranked Lindenwood University-Belleville, and Concordia (MI).

 

LAUREN WOMACK — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., Cass HS) . . . went 3-for-3 with a double, scored twice, and drove in a run in a 10-2 victory over Darton Feb. 28 as the Chargers split a conference doubleheader. Through 29 games, Womack is hitting .254 in 71 plate appearances with six RBI. She has four stolen bases. Georgia Highlands is 11-18 overall and 1-1 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. The Chargers host USC Salkehatchie March 1 and East Georgia in a GCAA conference doubleheader Sat. March 5.
