Local high school hoops roundup: Canes, Eagles, Tigers all collect region wins
CARTERSVILLE BOYS 73, NORTHWEST WHITFIELD 65
The Canes find themselves in a two-way tie for the region lead following their eight-point win in Tunnel Hill Tuesday night over Region 7AAAA contender, Northwest Whitfield.
Cartersville is now tied with Heritage-Catoosa for the top spot in the region. With Tuesday's loss to the Canes, the Bruins now have two region losses.
Trase Fezzia and Travon Davis scored 13 points each. Cade Archer added 10 and Cortney Cooley nine.
Cartersville improved to 13-5 overall and 9-1 in region games. The Canes host LaFayette Friday night.
EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS 68, MOUNT PARAN 53
The Eagles moved over the .500 mark Tuesday night with an important Region 6A win at Mount Paran.
Darius Thrower led ECA with 24 points. Chris Hale added 17 for the Eagles.
Excel improved to 10-9 on the year and 4-1 in region play.
ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 56, SONORAVILLE 51
The Adairsville Tigers picked up their second Region 6AAA win of the season with a five point home victory Tuesday night over Sonoraville.
The Tigers led 21-16 after one quarter and extended their lead to 32-21 at the intermission. The Phoenix outscored Adairsville 15-9 in the third quarter to narrow the margin to 41-36, but the Tigers held on in the fourth period for the win.
Adairsville (6-13 overall, 2-9 in 6AAA) will host Coahulla Creek Friday.
ROME BOYS 66, CASS 65

The Colonels overcame a 12-point deficit late in the fourth quarter Tuesday night, but eventually fell to Rome by a single point. Cass took the lead in the first quarter 19-12, but the Wolves came back in the second period to take a 33-29 advantage at the break.
In the third quarter, Rome’s Trey Driver hit four three-pointers that led to a twelve point lead for the Wolves at 54-42. The Colonels made several key defensive plays in the final period and held a lead late, but Rome made plays down the stretch to come away with a 66-65 victory. Mike Sims, who led the Colonels with 28 points, had a three-pointer to miss with six seconds remaining and the Wolves survived the Cass rally. Ashton Burley contributed 16 points for the Colonels and C.J. Bennett added 11. Trey Driver led Rome with 29 points (including 17 in the third quarter on five, three-pointers), followed by Jai Creamer with 14 points, and Trent Braziel with 8 points.
Cass fell to 8-11 with the loss and 2-7 in region games.
The Colonels travel to Sequoyah Friday.
NORTHWEST WHITFIELD GIRLS 61, CARTERSVILLE 31
The Lady Bruins improved to 17-4 on the year with a Region 7AAAA home win over the Lady Canes. Cartersville is now 3-15 overall, 1-9 in region play.
ROME GIRLS 73, CASS 53 by Yash Bhika, Cass student correspondent
The Lady Wolves defeated Cass in a Region 7AAAAA matchup and improved to 13-6 on the season with a 6-2 mark in region games.
Cass struggled to make shots early and the Lady Wolves would never trail as they established a 19-4 lead in the first eight minutes. Rome led 36-20 at halftime and 48-32 after three periods.
Esmeralda Thomas led the Lady Colonels with 18 points. Jana Morning added 12 points and Chanel Clemmons seven Cass.
Taya Gibson led Rome with 17 points. Tarrah Gibson and Kari Johnson each totaled 16 points for the Lady Wolves.
Cass slipped to 11-9 overall and 3-6 in 7AAAAA.
The Lady Colonels play at Sequoyah Friday. Tip is scheduled for 6pm.
