Chargers split DH, series with Gordon

The Georgia Highlands baseball team split a doubleheader at Gordon State CC Saturday to earn a four-game series split with the Highlanders.


Gordon State won the opener 8-3, but the Chargers held off a late surge by their hosts in the second game to win 11-9 in Barnesville.


Georgia Highlands took the series opening game Tuesday night at LakePoint, but lost Thursday in Barnesville, 9-4.


In Game 1 Saturday, Gordon State took a 6-0 lead with a five-run fourth inning and limited the Chargers to only a three-run sixth.


Adam Leverett (7 IP, 3ER, 6H, 0BB, 4K) tossed a complete game for the pitching win. Drew Wilson (3.1 IP, 6R, 4ER, 6H, 0BB, 2K) was saddled with the loss for the Chargers.


Brian Davis led the Gordon bats with two hits that included a double and two RBI. Six other Highlanders had one hit each.


Willis Kemp had two hits including a double for Georgia Highlands. Nick Piccapietra drove in two runs with a double.


In Game 2 Saturday, the Chargers posted seven runs through the first four innings, but a four-run third and a single run in the fourth kept Gordon State within striking distance at 7-5.


Georgia Highlands added four more runs in the top of the sixth and then held off the Highlanders in the bottom of the seventh despite allowing four runs for an 11-9 win.


GHC starting pitcher Tyler Sellers (5 IP, 5ER, 7H, 2BB, 5K) picked up the win. Noah Bryant (1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 2BB, 2K), Sam Warren (0.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 2BB), and Matt Norton (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 0K) also took the bump for the Chargers with Norton earning a save.


The Georgia Highlands offense produced 14 hits, including five extra-base hits. Parker Orr went 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Zach Miller doubled twice in a 3-for-4 performance that included three RBI. Austin Foster contributed a pair of base hits.


Following the four-game series split, Gordon State is 19-14 overall and 5-4 in GCAA conference play.


Georgia Highlands (22-10, 8-5) hosts Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Monday at 5 p.m. at LakePoint and travels to West Georgia Tech on Wednesday before hosting Gordon State again on Friday.
