Athletes Beyond Bartow: Updates for the week ending October 14


Former Adairsville High School quarterback Marcus Childers accounted for 314 total yards Saturday (169 rushing, 145 passing) as Northern Illinois edged Ohio University 24-21.


His clutch performance is part of the updates for local athletes across the nation for the week ending October 14.

 

NFL


VIC BEASLEY -- Atlanta Falcons (4th yr. pro; Clemson University, Adairsville HS)... made the start Sunday at defensive end in the Falcons' 34-29 home win over Tampa Bay. He did not record a tackle in the contest. Beasley has six tackles for the season and one sack. Atlanta (2-4) hosts the New York Giants for Monday Night Football October 22.



COLLEGE FOOTBALL


QUADRE ALLEN — Tusculum University (Sr. DB, Woodland HS)… recorded a pair of tackles Saturday in the Pioneers’ 14-0 home shutout of Newberry. One tackle was on kickoff coverage. The other was on a third down rushing play early in the fourth quarter. Tusculum (4-2, 3-1 South Atlantic Conference) travels to Catawba (NC) this Saturday.


TERRY BERDIN — Reinhardt University (Fr., RB, Cartersville HS)… (photo) had eight carries for 27 yards Saturday in the NAIA 4th-ranked Eagles’ 48-6 win at Bluefield College (VA). Reinhardt (6-1, 3-0 Mid-South Conference) enjoys a bye week before hosting University of Pikeville October 27.



CHRIS BLACKSTON — University of West Georgia (Jr., DB, Adairsville HS)… a starter a defensive back, Blackston had six total tackles (three solo) as the NCAA D2 4th-ranked Wolves beat 10th-ranked University of West Florida 27-7 in Pensacola. UWG (7-0, 4-0 Gulf South Conference) hosts West Alabama this Saturday.


BRYCE BURGESS — Reinhardt University (Fr., RB, Adairsville HS)… had three rushing attempts for 17 yards and one touchdown Saturday as the Eagles won at Bluefield College, 48-6. He also added a 35-yard reception out of the backfield. NAIA 4th-ranked Reinhardt (6-1, 3-0) has a bye week before hosting Mid-South Conference foe University of Pikeville October 27.




MARCUS CHILDERS — Northern Illinois University (R-So., QB, Adairsville HS)… accounted for 314 total yards Saturday as the Huskies rallied in the fourth quarter to edge Ohio University 24-21 and win for the third straight week. Childers had 23 rushing attempts for 169 yards including a long run of 32 yards and a 10-yard touchdown run with 10:38 left in the game to shrink Ohio’s lead to five points at the time. He also completed 17-of-33 passes for 145 yards. The victory improved NIU to 4-3 on the year and kept the Huskies unbeaten (4-0) in the Mid-America Conference. They have a bye week and then step out of conference October 27 when they travel to Brigham Young.


XAVIOR COAXUM — LaGrange College (So., DB, Cartersville HS)… the Panthers’ starting free safety Sunday in a 43-16 victory at Greensboro College. LaGrange (2-4, 1-2 USA-South) hosts Maryville College (TN) this Saturday afternoon.


JONATHAN CRUZ — UNC Charlotte (Fr., PK, Cartersville HS)… made a pair of field goals, including a 51-yarder; converted 4-of-4 PATs; and booted five of his eight kickoffs for touchbacks as Charlotte handled Western Kentucky 40-14. Cruz made a 33-yard field goal in the second quarter, but also missed one wide right in the period from the same distance. His successful 51-yarder was in the fourth period, but he also had a fourth quarter 32-yard attempt blocked. UNCC (3-3, 2-1 C-USA) travels to Middle Tennessee this Saturday.


DALEN CURTIS — Brevard College (So., FB, Cartersville HS)… started in the Tornados’ backfield at had one fourth quarter reception for 15 yards in a 52-17 road loss at Huntingdon College. Brevard (1-4, 1-2 USA-South Athletic Conference) hosts North Carolina Wesleyan this Saturday afternoon.


KURTIS FEANNY — Lenoir-Rhyne University (Fr., LB, Woodland HS)… saw action in the Bears’ 63-17 homecoming win over Limestone College. LRU (6-1, 5-0 South Atlantic Conference) has now won six in a row and plays out of conference this Saturday afternoon at Fort Valley State.


JORDAN FERGUSON — Middle Tennessee State (So., DL, Cartersville HS)… saw playing time in the Blue Raiders’ 24-21 loss at Florida International University in Miami. MTSU (3-3, 2-1 C-USA) hosts UNC Charlotte this Saturday afternoon.



MILLER FORRISTALL — University of Alabama (R-So., TE, Cartersville HS)… saw playing time but was not targeted as a receiver as the top-ranked Crimson Tide beat visiting Missouri, 39-10. Alabama (7-0, 4-0 SEC) plays at Tennessee this Saturday afternoon.


RICO FRYE — Bowling Green University (Fr., RB, Cartersville HS)… had four second quarter rushing attempts for 19 total yards with 18 coming on one play. He also returned the opening kickoff 17 yards and had one tackle on punt coverage in the opening period in the Falcons’ 42-35 home, conference loss to Western Michigan Saturday. Bowling Green (1-6, 0-3 MAC) will look to snap a four-game skid this Saturday afternoon at Ohio University.



GORDON GRAY — Kennesaw State University (Sr., WR, Cartersville HS)… saw action in the Owls’ 56-17 Big South Conference win at Gardner-Webb. KSU (6-1, 2-0) has six straight wins going into a bye week before traveling to Charleston Southern October 27.


GABRIEL GRIDLEY — Angelo State University (Jr., P, Cartersville HS)… had five punts for a 35-yard average Saturday in the Rams’ 26-18 home loss to West Texas A&M. Gridley had a long punt of 41 yards with one downed inside the 20 and two that were fair caught. He also had a third quarter punt blocked and returned for a WTAM touchdown in the third quarter. Angelo State (3-4, 2-3 Lone Star Conference) travels to Texas-Permian Basin this Saturday night.


SEAN HOLTON — Davidson College (So., DB, Cartersville HS)… had a pair of tackles — both in a second quarter series — as the Wildcats lost 35-28 at home to Morehead State. Davidson (5-2, 2-2 Pioneer League) plays at Marist this Saturday.


ANTOINE JEFFERSON — Lindsey Wilson College (So., WR, Cartersville HS)… fumbled, but his team recovered a punt return that ended in a seven yard loss in the first quarter of a 37-31 overtime win at NAIA 15th-ranked Georgetown College. The Blue Raiders (5-1, 2-0 Mid-South Conference) play this Saturday at Cumberland University (TN).


BRADY JERNIGAN — Maryville College (Jr., DL, Woodland HS)… had one tackle early in the fourth quarter in the Scots’ 34-9 victory at Methodist Saturday. Maryville (3-2, 3-0 USA-South Athletic Conference) tries to remain unbeaten in conference this Saturday afternoon at LaGrange College.


EMMANUEL JONES — Colorado State University (So., LB, Woodland HS)… recorded a pair of tackles Saturday as the Rams edged visiting New Mexico 20-18. CSU (3-4, 2-1 Mountain West Conference) plays at Boise State this Friday night.


BRADLEY KIRK — Shorter University (Fr. DB, Cartersville HS)… collected one, second quarter tackle in the Hawks’ 41-7 loss Saturday at North Greenville University. Shorter (0-7, 0-5 Gulf South Conference) hosts Mississippi College this Saturday afternoon.


NYVIN NELSON — UT Chattanooga (Fr., LB, Cartersville HS)… saw playing time in the Mocs’ 26-6 victory at Western Carolina. UTC (5-2, 3-2 SoCon) has a bye week prior to hosting VMI October 27.


JACOB POTTER — Kennesaw State University (Fr., LS, Adairsville HS)… saw second half action Saturday with one punt snap and a pair of extra point snaps as the FCS 2nd-ranked Owls’ won at Gardner-Webb, 56-17. KSU (6-1, 2-0 Big South) has a bye week before traveling to Charleston Southern October 27.


MARK QUATTLEBAUM — UNC Charlotte (Sr., SL, Cartersville HS)… caught one pass for 14 yards and had one punt return for three yards in the 49ers’ 40-14 home win over Western Kentucky. Charlotte (3-3, 2-1 C-USA) plays at Middle Tennessee this Saturday.


GARRETT SHELTON — Alabama State University (Fr., LS, Cartersville HS)… (photo right) saw playing time in the Hornets’ 45-7 loss Saturday at South Alabama. ASU (2-4, 1-1 SWAC) have a bye week before facing Alabama A&M in the Magic City Classic October 27 in Birmingham.



AVERY SHOWELL — Georgia Tech (R-Fr., DB, Cartersville HS)… saw action with the Yellow Jackets’ kickoff return team in a 28-14 home loss Saturday to Duke. Georgia Tech (3-4, 2-2 ACC) has a bye week prior to playing at Virginia Tech on Thursday night, October 25.


BRANDON WADE — Ellsworth CC (So., DL, Cartersville HS)… had three tackles, one for a loss, and broke up one pass in a 36-30 home loss to Fort Scott CC. Ellsworth (1-6) plays at Iowa Central CC this Saturday afternoon.


JAKE WALKER — Furman University (So., TE, Cartersville, GA, Darlington HS)… made a third quarter catch for eight yards and a first down on the only pass he was targeted during the Paladins’ 34-14 home upset win over FCS 4th-ranked Wofford. Furman (2-3, 2-1 SoCon) entertains Samford this Saturday afternoon.





CROSS COUNTRY


SPENCER FIELDS — Rhodes College (Sr., Kingston, GA, Darlington HS)… placed 85th of 344 runners in 26:23 as the Lynx finished 12th of 50 teams at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Kollege Town Sports Pre-National Invitational 8K at Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wisconsin. North Central won the race with three runners in the top five and five in the top 25. Next for Fields is the Southern Athletic Association Championship hosted by Rhodes at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis October 27.



SOCCER


KATELYNN HARBEKE — Life University (Sr., MF, Cass HS)… played 66 minutes in a start and took two shots as the Runnin’ Eagles lost 4-2 at Campbellsville University. Life (4-8, 0-3 Mid-South Conference) hosts conference games with University of the Cumberlands (KY) Tuesday evening and Shawnee State University (OH) Friday night.
