Athletes Beyond Bartow update for the week ending April 14


The softball and baseball update for local college and professional 'Athletes Beyond Bartow' for the week ending Sunday, April 14. The report also includes college golf, tennis, track & field, along with pro basketball.

 

COLLEGE SOFTBALL



SARAH FOX — Agnes Scott College (Fr., Inf., Cass HS)… hit safely in three of the Scotties’ final four regular season games last week including a 3-for-4 game at Huntingdon College last Wednesday. For the week, Fox was 5-for-9 with a stolen base. In her first college season, Fox hit .279 with seven RBI in 27 games. Agnes Scott finished the year by missing the USA South Conference tournament with a 6-28 overall record. The Scotties were 3-13 in the conference.


SIERRAH GANI — Georgia Highlands CC (So., Inf., Cass HS)… heading into the final two weeks of the regular season, Gani continues to lead the Chargers with a .472 batting average and has 40 RBI in 39 games played. In doubleheaders last week against conference leading Georgia Military College and Gordon State CC, Gani was 6-for-11 at the plate with a double, a walk, two RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored. GHC split games with both conference foes. The Chargers (22-16, 13-9 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) host Andrew College Thursday and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Saturday in two more GCAA doubleheaders.


SYDNEY HODORFF — LaGrange College (Sr., C/Inf., Woodland HS)… hit safely in five of the Panthers’ six games last week and finished 6-for- 17 at the plate with a double, a walk, and seven RBI. LaGrange swept doubleheaders with conference opponents Wesleyan and at Berea (KY) while splitting a home doubleheader with Judson College (AL). The Panthers (14-14, 9-7 USA South) complete regular season play out of conference at Judson Tuesday before opening the conference tournament in a best-of-three series at Huntingdon Friday and Saturday.


HANNAH KNAPP — Talladega College (Jr., UT, Adairsville HS)… went 4-for-11 with one run scored and one RBI, but the Tornadoes dropped doubleheader decisions to Tennessee Wesleyan and Point University at home. Talladega (4-26) hosts Auburn-Montgomery Tuesday and Judson College Thursday.

PARIS POSTON — Columbus State University (Fr., OF, Cartersville HS)… in their only two games this past week, the Cougars split a home conference doubleheader with Francis Marion University Saturday. Poston was 1-for 3 with two RBI and a run scored in a 5-4 win and was 1-for-3 with one RBI in a 12-9 loss. The Cougars’ right fielder has started 38 games this season and appeared in 39 with a .265 batting average. She has 18 RBI and a pair of homers among 14 extra base hits. CSU (29-13, 9-3 Peach Belt Conference) is currently third in the conference and hosts second place Georgia College Tuesday in a doubleheader.


HANNAH TODD — Kansas University (So., P, Cartersville HS)… made appearances in all three games of the Jayhawks’ Big 12 Conference series at home with Oklahoma this past weekend tossing a total of six innings. She retired the only batter faced in the sixth inning of Friday’s 10-0 loss. She retired the only two batters she faced in the seventh inning of Saturday’s 5-0 loss, and entered with only one out in the first inning in Sunday’s 8-0 loss working five innings. Todd allowed three earned runs on five hits, three walks, and a hit batsman. She fanned three. Kansas (14-27, 2-7) will look to snap a six-game losing skid this weekend at Texas Tech with single games Thursday through Saturday.


TAYLOR WAITS — Brewton Parker College (Jr., OF, Cartersville HS)… had a single to left-center field Saturday in her only plate appearance of the week. It came in the bottom of the seventh inning in a 4-0 loss to visiting Faulkner University (AL). She also appeared as a pinch runner in the Barons’ 1-0, 11-inning win over Faulkner on Friday. BPC (14-28, 8-18 Southern States Athletic Conference) hosts Middle Georgia State Tuesday for a conference doubleheader and entertains non-conference foe Trinity Baptist College (FL) for a doubleheader Thursday.


ANNALYN YANTIS — Samford University (Sr., P, Cartersville HS)… picked up her fourth pitching win of the season Friday with a four inning relief appearance against visiting East Tennessee State. Yantis (4-7) allowed one earned run on three hits and one intentional walk. Samford (20-25, 9-3 Southern Conference) is in the midst of a five-game winning streak after sweeping the visiting Buccaneers. They host Mercer in a three-game SoCon series Friday and Saturday.





PRO BASEBALL



SAM HOWARD — Albuquerque Isotopes (6th yr. pro; Triple-A Pacific Coast League; Colorado Rockies’ organization; LHP; Georgia Southern University; Cartersville HS)… made relief appearances last Wednesday and Saturday at Reno and at Tacoma. Howard earned his first win of the year with two and one-third innings of work at Reno. He entered with two outs in the fifth inning and did not allow a run. He scattered three hits and a walk with one strikeout as the Isotopes trumped the Aces 13-2. Saturday at Tacoma, Howard worked the final two innings of an 11-2 win over the Rainiers. He allowed one earned run on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Albuquerque (7-4) currently trails the Las Vegas Aviators by two games in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Southern Division.


CONNOR JUSTUS — Mobile BayBears (4th yr. pro; Double-A Southern League; Los Angeles Angels’ organization; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS)… in a rain plagued four-game series at the Mississippi Braves last Wednesday through the weekend, Justus started twice at shortstop and twice at second base. He was 4-for-11 in the series with a double, a run scored, and three walks. The BayBears (4-5) are currently third in the Southern League South Division, two and one-half games behind the Pensacola Blue Wahoos and a half-game behind the Biloxi Shuckers. Mobile plays a five-game home series Monday through Friday with Montgomery and starts a five-game set at Pensacola Saturday.




COLLEGE BASEBALL



ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Jr., LHP, Cartersville HS)… made a pair of appearances in losses for the 24th-ranked Tigers as they went 1-3 for the week. He retired the final two outs of the sixth inning but was tagged with his first loss of the season last Tuesday as Auburn fell to Jacksonville State 11-6. Anderson (5-1) gave up four earned runs on two hits and two walks with one strikeout against the Gamecocks. In a 4-1 loss at 11th-ranked Texas A&M Sunday, he entered in the fourth inning with the Tigers trailing 3-1 and worked four and two-thirds innings. He allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk while recording five strikeouts. For the season, the southpaw has a 3.00 ERA in 33 innings with 36 strikeouts. Auburn (24-12, 8-7 SEC) plays at 13th-ranked Georgia Tech Tuesday and hosts 18th-ranked Ole Miss Thursday through Saturday in a three-game conference series.


LEVI AYERS — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… was called on to retire the final two outs and the only two batters he faced Friday of a 19-2 home win over Andrew College. Georgia Highlands (25-19, 11-10 GCAA) has single conference games this week at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Monday, at home against West Georgia Tech Wednesday night, and at Gordon State CC Friday afternoon. BAILEY CAMPBELL — Young Harris College (So., 1B, Cass HS)… still limited by a recent hand injury, Campbell made an unsuccessful pinch hitting appearance last Wednesday at Mars Hill College. Now with 24 appearances and 20 starts, Campbell still carries a .311 batting average with two homers and 23 RBI. Young Harris (28-13, 14-8) travels to Southern Wesleyan (SC) for a non-conference game Tuesday night before heading to 8th-ranked Columbus State for a three-game Peach Belt Conference series Thursday through Saturday.


CARRINGTON EVANS — Augusta University (R-So., OF, Cartersville HS)… was 0-for-4 in one start and a pair of pinch hitting appearances last week as the Jaguars were swept in a three-game Peach Belt Conference series at Young Harris College. Augusta (17-24, 6-21 PBC) hosts Coker College Tuesday, travels to Emmanuel College Wednesday, and visits Georgia College Friday and Saturday for a three-game conference series.


LANE GRIFFITH — University of West Georgia (Jr., C, Adairsville)… started all five games behind the plate for the Wolves last week as they went 3-2. Griffith was 4-for-14 with a walk, five runs scored, and three RBI. West Georgia won one of three at Auburn Montgomery and had non-conference wins over Emmanuel and Georgia Southwestern. The Wolves (21-19, 12-11 GSC) currently hold the seventh of eight conference playoff spots in the Gulf South Conference with six league games remaining. West Georgia hosts 8th-ranked Columbus State Wednesday out of conference and entertains Union University (TN) for a three-game conference series Friday and Saturday.


HUNTER HICE — USC-Upstate (Fr., Inf., Adairsville HS)… saw action in three of the Spartans’ four games last week. He was 2-for-7 at the plate in a pair of starts as DH and one pinch hitting appearance. USC-U won 2-1 Wednesday at North Carolina A&T but was swept at home in a three-game Big South Conference series by visiting Presbyterian College over the weekend. The Spartans (16-20, 4-11) host Campbell for a three-game conference series Thursday through Saturday.


KENNY JINKS — Shorter University (Fr., LHP, Woodland HS)… retired the final five outs in the Hawks’ 9-5 loss Friday at Mississippi College. He allowed one, unearned run on one hit and one walk. Shorter (19-19, 11-14 Gulf South Conference) hosts Clark Atlanta Tuesday afternoon and a three-game conference series with Valdosta State Friday and Saturday.



MASON ROBINSON — Louisiana Tech (R-Sr., OF, Woodland HS)… in three games at Florida Atlantic this past weekend Robinson was 2-for-9 at the plate and scored a run as the Bulldogs won two of three Conference USA games, but the right fielder also made a pair of impressive defensive plays. In Friday’s game, he made a sliding catch in foul territory to end the third inning with the Bulldogs ahead 2-0. The catch came with the bases loaded to end an Owls’ threat. In Sunday’s game, Robinson ran full speed into the fence lining right field foul territory and flipped over the barrier but held on for a catch for the first out of the game. Louisiana Tech (24-18, 10-5) plays at Louisiana-Monroe Tuesday before hosting Marshall for three C-USA games Thursday through Saturday.


TRISTIN SMITH — Young Harris College (Sr., 2B, Adairsville HS)… was 6-for-14 last week as the Mountain Lions won all four games — one at Mars Hill College and three in conference over visiting Augusta University. Smith had two doubles, a walk, a stolen base, scored four runs, and drove in one run during a productive week. Young Harris (28-13, 14-8 Peach Belt Conference) travels to 8th-ranked Columbus State for an important PBC three game series Thursday through Saturday.


TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (R-Sr., OF, Adairsville HS)… helped lead the Mountain Lions to four straight wins last week. He was 6-for-15 at the plate with three doubles, four runs scored, three walks, and three RBI. YHC won at Mars Hill College and swept a home three-game series with Augusta University. The Mountain Lions (28-13, 14-8) make the trip to Columbus State for a three game Peach Belt Conference series Thursday through Saturday.







PRO BASKETBALL

ELIJAH ROBINSON -- Villa San Martin (1st yr. pro; Argentine League; Emmanuel College; Excel Christian Academy)... Robinson led Villa San Martin in scoring during a pair of wins last week. He scored 23 points and added five rebounds in an 80-76 win over Echague last Tuesday. Robinson followed that up with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds, while chipping in with four assists, during an 81-69 triumph over Hindu Club on Friday.



GOLF

LINDSEY BONNER -- York College (So., Cartersville HS)... saw a first-round lead slip away on the second day of the Gettysburg Invitational to finish runner-up in the event. Despite the team's second-round slide, Bonner improved over the weekend. She shot 88 on Saturday and 84 on Sunday to finish 13th in the 33-person field.



TENNIS


PEYTON GOLLHOFER -- Ball State University (Sr., Cartersville, GA; Laurel Springs Academy)... Gollhofer didn't have to do much to help the Cardinals to a 7-0 rout of Northern Illinois on Sunday. She teamed with Isabelle Dohanics for a 6-3 win on Line 2 doubles, but the dominant senior wasn't needed in singles play, as more inexperienced players still managed to shut out the Huskies. Ball State will close out the regular season against Akron on Saturday. The two teams will enter the match tied for third in the Mid-American Conference at 4-2.



TRACK AND FIELD


TREVOR KNOWLES -- Albion College (So., Woodland HS)... won the high jump and placed third in the long jump in Albion's home tri-match on Friday. He cleared 1.90 meters in the high jump and leapt 6.38 meters in the long jump.
