Canes fifth entering final round; Lady Cats, Lady Tigers compete at state tourneys


The Cartersville boys golf team shot an opening round 13-over-par 297 Monday at Country Club of Columbus to stand in fifth place halfway through the 2019 GHSA Class AAAA State Championship Tournament. St. Pius X leads the tournament after 18 holes of the 36-hole event with an even par 284. The Golden Lions lead second place North Oconee (290) by six shots and Columbus (292) by eight shots heading into Tuesday’s final round. Marist is in fourth place, one shot ahead of Cartersville.


University of Georgia commit, Buck Brumlow, paced the Hurricanes with a 1-under-par opening round 70. He is tied for fifth individually with North Oconee’s Luke Koenig. Carter Loflin of St. Pius X leads the field after an opening round 65 (-6). He is followed by Jonathan Parker (66, -5) of Columbus, Matthew Larkin (68, -3) of Marist, and Cole Kirkland (69, -2) of Northside-Columbus. Camden Meadows (74, +3), Jake Lawson (75, +4), and Carson Harris (78, +7) had the other counting scores for Cartersville in Monday’s first round. Dalton Henson and Blane Davis fired 81 and 87, respectively.




LADY CATS 11TH AFTER OPENING ROUND


The Woodland girls golf team is in eleventh place in the Class AAAAA Championship Tournament at Sunset Hills Country Club in Carrollton after the Lady Cats shot an opening round 330.


Heading into Tuesday’s final round, Starr’s Mill leads by seven shots over second place Veterans. Starr’s Mill fired a 248 team score. Veterans opened with a 255. Union Grove (274) is in third place and Carrollton (288) is fourth with South Effingham (289) only one shot behind in fifth place. Veterans’ Mailey Buzzell leads the individual race with an opening round 74. Liza Eubanks of Starr’s Mill fired a first round 75. Erin Evans had the low round for Woodland with a 108. Elizabeth Nycum shot 109 and Emily Nycum shot 113 for Woodland to round out the Lady Cats’ three counting scores. Kaylee Jones shot 128.





LADY TIGERS COMPETE AT AAA STATE TOURNEY The Adairsville girls golf team is participating in the Class AAA State Championship Tournament at Arrowhead Pointe Golf Course at Lake Richard B. Russell State Park in Elberton. Cortni Jacobs had the low round for the Lady Tigers Monday with a 93. She was followed by teammates Maycee Gwinn with a 111 and Lindsey Angland at 127 for a team score total of 331. All three Adairsville players are juniors. The 93 by Jacobs was good for 16th place individually heading into Tuesday's final round. With Tuesday's round to go, the Lady Tigers are tied for tenth place with Dawson County — 12 strokes behind ninth-place Calhoun.
