Athletes Beyond Bartow: Lawrence, Childers toss 3 TDs each in wins, Beasley makes five stops in loss

Adairsville's Vic Beasley had five total tackles Sunday for the Atlanta Falcons' defense in a 27-20 home loss to the Seattle Seahawks while former Cartersville quarterback Trevor Lawrence and former Adairsville quarterback Marcus Childers accounted for three touchdowns each in their teams' blowout wins Saturday. This week's update of local athletes at the collegiate and professional levels also includes soccer, cross country, volleyball, and swimming.

 

NFL



VIC BEASLEY — Atlanta Falcons (5th yr. pro; OLB; Clemson; Adairsville HS)… had five total tackles (three solo, two assisted) in the Falcons’ 27-20 home loss to the visiting Seattle Seahawks Sunday afternoon. Atlanta lost its sixth consecutive game and falls to 1-7 on the season. The Falcons have a bye week prior to traveling to New Orleans November 10.




COLLEGE FOOTBALL



TERRY BERDIN — Reinhardt University (So., RB, Cartersville HS)… had one carry in the fourth quarter for an eight yard gain in Saturday’s 48-28 win at St. Andrews (NC). In six game appearances this season, Berdin has 49 yards on 13 carries for a 3.8 average. The NAIA 17th-ranked Eagles (7-2, 4-0 Mid-South Conference, Appalachian Division) entertain Cincinnati Christian University Saturday afternoon for Homecoming.


CHRIS BLACKSTON — University of West Georgia (Sr., DB, Adairsville HS)… was credited with a pair of tackles Saturday in the Wolves’ 33-17 victory at West Alabama. Through eight games this season — all starts for Blackston — he is second on the team in tackles with 45 total including 32 solo, 2.5 for loss, one sack, three pass breakups, three passes defended, two quarterback hurries, and a pair of fumble recoveries. West Georgia (5-3, 3-2 Gulf South Conference) hosts Mississippi College Saturday in Carrollton.


BRYCE BURGESS — Reinhardt University (So., RB, Adairsville HS)… rushed for 20 yards on three attempts Saturday with a long run of 11 yards as the NAIA 17th-ranked Eagles won at St. Andrews (NC), 48-28. In nine games this season, Burgess has rushed for 126 yards on 19 carries and one touchdown. Reinhardt (7-2, 4-0 Mid-South Conference, Appalachian Division) entertains Cincinnati Christian University Saturday afternoon for Homecoming.



MARCUS CHILDERS — Northern Illinois University (R-Jr., QB, Adairsville HS)… was only 7-for-9 for 71 yards, but threw for three touchdowns Saturday as the Huskies routed visiting Akron 49-0. He also gained 36 yards on the ground on nine carries. Playing in five games this season, Childers is 26-for-40 passing for 252 yards and four touchdowns. He also has 144 yards and two touchdowns rushing. UNI (3-5, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) travels to Central Michigan Saturday for another conference matchup.



JOHNATHAN CRUZ — UNC-Charlotte (So., PK, Cartersville HS)… was 3-for-3 on PAT kicks Saturday in the 49ers’ 39-38 home win over North Texas. Charlotte elected to go for two on their final three touchdowns and failed on each attempt, but salvaged the win with a come-from-behind touchdown with only 18 seconds remaining. Cruz had seven kickoffs in the win for a 56.1 yard average, two touchbacks, and one kick out of bounds. For the season, he is 3-for-3 on field goal attempts with a long kick of 53 yards. He has averaged 57.2 yards per kickoff with 16 touchbacks in 35 kicks.


KURTIS FEANNY — Lenoir-Rhyne University (So., OL, Woodland HS)… saw action as part of an offensive unit that rushed for 250 yards and passed for 211 yards in a 28-20 win at Limestone. The NCAA D-II seventh-ranked Bears improved to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. LRU hosts 12th-ranked Wingate (8-0) Saturday afternoon in a showdown for the conference lead.


MILLER FORRISTALL — University of Alabama (R-Jr., TE, Cartersville HS)… caught two first quarter passes for 11 total yards and had a kickoff return of three yards in the 2nd-ranked Crimson Tide’s 48-7 pounding of visiting Arkansas. For the season, Forristall has 12 receptions for 131 yards and three touchdowns. Alabama (8-0, 5-0 SEC) has a bye week prior to hosting top-ranked LSU November 9.


HUNTER HARDIN — Point University (Jr., OL, Woodland HS)… a starter at center for the Skyhawks in their 47-14 win at Union College (KY). Point rolled up 425 yards of total offense including 283 yards rushing in the Mid-South Conference victory. Poing (3-5, 1-1) makes the trip to Grayson, Kentucky Saturday to take on Kentucky Christian University in another MSC contest.

SEAN HOLTON — Davidson College (Jr., S, Cartersville HS)… no recorded stats, but did see action in the Wildcats’ 27-21 homecoming loss to Marist Saturday. Davidson (5-3, 2-2 Pioneer Football League) entertains Valparaiso this Saturday.



BRADY JERNIGAN — Maryville College (TN) (Sr., DL, Woodland HS)… had four tackle assists Saturday in the Scots’ 28-10 home win over LaGrange College. Maryville (2-5, 2-2 USA-South Athletic Conference) travels to Virginia Saturday to challenge Averett University.




EMMANUEL JONES — Colorado State University (Jr., DE, Woodland HS)… was a starter at defensive end but did not have an entry on the stat sheet in the Rams’ 41-31 win Saturday evening at Fresno State. Jones has 29 tackles this season (16 solo) through eight games. He also has four quarterback hurries, a sack, and one forced fumble. CSU (3-5, 2-2 Mountain West Conference) will look to win their third straight Saturday at home when UNLV visits Fort Collins.


TREVOR LAWRENCE — Clemson University (So., QB, Cartersville HS)… threw for three touchdowns, giving him a touchdown pass in 18 consecutive games, and was 16-for-19 for 275 passing yards as the 4th-ranked Tigers extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 23 games with a 59-7 blowout of Boston College. Through eight games, Lawrence is 137-for-209 for 1809 yards and 17 passing touchdowns. He has thrown eight interceptions. The sophomore quarterback also has 229 yards rushing on 46 attempts with five rushing touchdowns. Clemson (8-0, 6-0 ACC) steps out of conference Saturday afternoon to host Wofford.


DORIAN PITT — Southwestern Oklahoma State University (Sr., OL, Adairsville HS)… saw action Saturday in the Bulldogs’ 36-35 loss to Arkansas Tech. SWOSU (2-6, 2-6 Great American Conference) hosts Southern Nazarene University this Saturday afternoon.


JACOB POTTER — Kennesaw State University (So., LS, Adairsville HS)… snapped on six PAT attempts and two punts Saturday as the FCS 4th-ranked Owls’ beat visiting North Alabama 41-17. KSU (7-1, 2-0 Big South Conference) has now won six straight since an early September overtime loss at Kent State. The Owls host Monmouth this Saturday afternoon.




NICK ROOT — Carson-Newman University (R-Fr., OL, Cartersville HS)… saw action Saturday as the Eagles defeated visiting Newberry 24-21. CNU rushed for 273 of their 315 yards of total offense in the Homecoming victory. The Eagles (5-2, 3-2 South Atlantic Conference) travel to Mars Hill this Saturday afternoon. JAKE WALKER — Furman University (Jr., TE, Cartersville, GA, Darlington HS)… saw action in the FCS 14th-ranked Paladins’ 28-7 Southern Conference win Saturday at Western Carolina University. Furman (5-3, 4-1) plays at Chattanooga this Saturday.


BRYCE WILKINS — Reinhardt University (So., OL, Cartersville HS)… was a starter at left guard in the NAIA 17th-ranked Eagles’ 48-28 win Saturday at St. Andrews (NC). Reinhardt rushed for 371 yards and finished with 493 total yards in their victory. The Eagles were also 7-for-7 in the red zone. RU (7-2, 4-0 Mid-South Conference, Appalachian Division) entertains Cincinnati Christian University this Saturday afternoon for Homecoming.




CROSS COUNTRY



CHEYENNE SPINKS — University of North Georgia (Fr., Woodland HS)… finished 22nd overall of 105 runners at the 2019 Peach Belt Conference Championship Meet in Lumberton, North Carolina. The Lady Nighthawks finished conference runner-up to Flagler College by nine points with Spinks completing the 5k course at Luther Britt Park in 19:42. UNG now prepares for the NCAA Regional, hosted by Wingate, in two weeks.




VOLLEYBALL



GRACE HUNTER — Brewton-Parker College (Fr., Cartersville HS)… In a three-set loss last Tuesday to Middle Georgia State, Hunter was credited with four kills. The Barons also had a five-set win at Toccoa Falls College Friday and played Regent University and Bob Jones University Saturday, but individual stats were not available at the time of this release. BPC (3-21, 0-9 Southern States Athletic Conference) hosts Savannah State University Monday night and entertains Florida College and Florida Memorial Friday.





SOCCER



EMILY COLLUM — Georgia Southwestern State University (So., F, Adairsville HS)… saw nine minutes of action off the bench Saturday in a 1-0 Peach Belt Conference loss at UNC-Pembroke. The Hurricanes also suffered a 7-1 home conference loss Tuesday to 4th-ranked Flagler College. GSW (3-11-1, 0-8 PBC) will look to snap a nine-game losing skid Saturday at USC-Aiken.


KURT MOORE — Birmingham Southern College (Jr., GK, Euharlee, GA, Darlington HS)… made one save in the Panthers’ 3-2 double-overtime loss to visiting Millsaps College. BSC (6-8-1, 2-5 Southern Athletic Association) plays in the SAA Tournament Saturday at either Berry or Sewanee.


MARISSA MOWRY — Anderson University (So., MF, Cartersville HS)… played all 90 minutes in a 2-0 win Wednesday over Erskine College and 80 minutes Saturday in a 1-0 loss at Lenoir-Rhyne University. The Trojans (7-6, 4-4 South Atlantic Conference) host conference foe Catawba this Saturday night.

MADISON PUTZER — Young Harris College (Jr., MF, Cartersville HS)… played 17 minutes in the Mountain Lions’ 3-0 win Wednesday at home over Georgia College. YHC (6-7, 5-3 Peach Belt Conference) entertains North Georgia Wednesday night and Clayton State Saturday night.



PAYTON PUTZER — Young Harris College (Jr., MF, Cartersville HS)… started and played 54 minutes in YHC’s 3-0 win at home last Wednesday over Georgia College. She also contributed 29 minutes in the Mountain Lions’ 4-1 loss Saturday at USC-Aiken. Young Harris (6-7, 5-3 PBC) have home matches this week against University of North Georgia Wednesday night at Clayton State Saturday evening.



ANTHONY ROBLEDO — Reinhardt University (So., MF, Cass HS)… logged the final four minutes of the Eagles’ 4-1 win last Wednesday at home over Columbia International. Reinhardt (10-5-1, 8-2-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) finished tied with Bryan for second place in the conference regular season standings and will begin play in the AAC championship tournament Saturday at home.


RUSSELL SHEALY — University of Maryland (R-Fr., GK, Cartersville, GA, Darlington HS)… saw nine minutes in goal at the end of the first half Friday night in the 22nd-ranked Terrapins’ 2-0 Big Ten Conference win at Ohio State. Maryland (9-4-2, 3-1-2) has won three straight and plays at Penn State Tuesday night before hosting Michigan Sunday to wrap up the regular season.




SWIMMING



JORDAN BALDWIN — Life University (So., Woodland HS)… placed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke; sixth in the 50-yard freestyle; fifth in the 200-yard backstroke; and was part of the Eagles’ fourth place 200-yard freestyle relay team Saturday in a home meet won by Lindsey Wilson College 183-61. The next meet for LIfe will be November 22-23 in the Igloo Invitational at Sewanee: University of the South.


RYLEE MOSS — Old Dominion University (Fr., Adairsville HS)… swam the third leg of the Monarchs’ second place 200-yard medley relay team; placed fourth in the 200-yard butterfly; and was fourth in the 100-yard butterfly as ODU defeated host Campbell University 134-127 and Gardner-Webb University 184-75 Saturday in Buies Creek, North Carolina. Next for Old Dominion is a home meet Saturday afternoon against Davidson.


ELIJAH WILHOIT — Life University (Fr., Cass HS)… finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle; sixth in the 100-yard freestyle; sixth in the 100-yard butterfly; and was part of the fourth place 200-yard freestyle relay team as the Eagles lost 183-61 to visiting Lindsey Wilson College Saturday. Life returns to action November 22-23 in the Igloo Invitational at Sewanee: University of the South.
