Athletes Beyond Bartow: Updates on local athletes at the collegiate level


It is that busy time each year when Fall and Winter collegiate sports overlap. This week’s edition of Athletes Beyond Bartow includes updates for football, volleyball, soccer, swimming, and basketball. A pair of former Woodland Wildcats had notable weeks on the college gridiron. Junior defensive end Emmanuel Jones (photo) had six tackles and a quarterback hurry in Colorado State’s win over UNLV while sophomore offensive lineman Kurtis Feanny helped lead the 7th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne Bears to 369 yards of total offense and a key conference win. College soccer and volleyball teams are approaching conference tournaments and post-season play, while swimming and basketball have started with wrestling teams also launching their seasons.




COLLEGE FOOTBALL



CHRIS BLACKSTON — University of West Georgia (Sr., DB, Adairsville HS)… made six tackles and broke up one pass as the Wolves defeated visiting Mississippi College Saturday in Carrollton, 35-21. UWG (6-3, 4-2) travels to Cleveland, Mississippi Saturday to take on Delta State in another Gulf South Conference contest.


MARCUS CHILDERS — Northern Illinois University (R-Jr., QB, Adairsville HS)… started the game but shared time beginning in the first quarter as the Huskies fell behind 14-0 early in a 48-10 loss at Central Michigan. Childers returned in the fourth quarter and finished the contest 1-for-2 passing for 8 yards. He had 19 yards rushing on seven attempts. NIU (3-6, 2-3 Mid American Conference) has a bye week before traveling to Toledo for a Wednesday night game on ESPN2 game November 13.


JONATHAN CRUZ — UNC-Charlotte (So., PK, Cartersville HS)… made a pair of field goals from 38 and 49 yards, was 4-for-4 on PATs, and booted 5-of-6 kickoffs for touchbacks as the 49ers beat visiting Middle Tennessee 34-20 Saturday. Cruz did miss on a 48-yard attempt in the second quarter, his first miss of the season. He has made five of six field goal attempts this season with a long kick of 53 yards. His 41 kickoffs have averaged 57.7 yards with 21 touchbacks. Charlotte (4-5, 2-3 C-USA) travel to El Paso Saturday to face the UTEP Miners.



DALEN CURTIS — Brevard College (Jr., TE/FB, Cartersville HS)… saw action in the Tornadoes 21-3 win Saturday at LaGrange College. Brevard (5-2, 3-2) hosts the Cougars of Averett University Saturday night in another USA South Athletic Conference game.




KURTIS FEANNY — Lenoir-Rhyne University (So., OL, Woodland HS)… the Bears’ starter at left guard contributed to an offense that totaled 369 yards, including 200 yards rushing in a 20-13 home victory over 12th-ranked Wingate. 7th-ranked LRU (9-0, 7-0 South Atlantic Conference) entertains UNC-Pembroke Saturday in Hickory.


HUNTER HARDIN — Point University (Jr., OL, Woodland HS)… a starter at center Saturday, Hardin was part of an offense that produced 429 total yards in a 27-12 win at Kentucky Christian. Point (4-5, 2-1 Mid-South Conference) hosts St. Andrews (NC) University Saturday for Homecoming.


SEAN HOLTON — Davidson College (Jr., DB, Cartersville HS)… made three tackles including one for a three-yard loss. He also recovered a fumble Saturday in the Wildcats’ 27-21 Pioneer Football League home win over Valparaiso. Davidson (6-3, 3-2) travels to Indianapolis Saturday to play at Butler.


BRADY JERNIGAN — Maryville College (Tenn.) (Sr., DL, Woodland HS)… made one tackle in the Scots’ 31-13 loss Saturday at Averett University (VA). Maryville (2-6, 2-3 USA-South Athletic Conference) hosts Greensboro College Saturday afternoon for Senior Recognition Day.


JaCOREY JOHNS — Wake Forest University (R-Fr., LB, Cartersville HS)… contributed one tackle Saturday as the 22nd-ranked Demon Deacons beat visiting N.C. State 44-10. Wake Forest (7-1, 3-1 ACC) plays at Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon.


EMMANUEL JONES — Colorado State University (Jr., DE, Woodland HS)… had six tackles and a quarterback hurry Saturday afternoon as the Rams beat visiting UNLV 37-17. Through nine games this season, Jones has 35 tackles including 1.5 for loss, one sack, five hurries, and a forced fumble. CSU (4-5, 3-2 Mountain West) will look to continue a three-game win streak November 16 when the Rams host Air Force.


BRADLEY KIRK — Shorter University (So., DB, Cartersville HS)… made three tackles in the Hawks’ 38-6 Gulf South Conference loss Saturday to Delta State. Shorter (0-9, 0-7) steps out of conference this Saturday afternoon to host Allen University.


TREVOR LAWRENCE — Clemson University (So., QB, Cartersville HS)… threw for three touchdowns and 2018 yards in the Tigers’ 59-14 win over Wofford Saturday. Lawrence completed 12-of-16 passes and rushed for 33 yards on four attempts in the win. His 218 passing yards Saturday put him over 2,000 for the season with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions. His 82.4 total QBR ranks him eighth in the nation. No. 4-ranked Clemson (9-0, 6-0 ACC) travels to Raleigh Saturday night to take on the North Carolina State Wolfpack.


DORIAN PITT — Southwestern Oklahoma State University (Sr., OL, Adairsville HS)… saw action for the Bulldogs Saturday in a 28-7 home win over Southern Nazarene University. SWOSU (3-6, 3-6 Great American Conference) travels to Oklahoma Baptist University Saturday for another GAC matchup.


JACOB POTTER — Kennesaw State University (So., LS, Adairsville HS)… made five punt snaps and three PAT snaps in the FCS 4th-ranked Owls’ upset loss Saturday at home to Monmouth, 45-21. KSU (7-2, 2-1 Big South Conference) makes the trip to Campbell Saturday afternoon in another key conference game.


NICK ROOT — Carson-Newman University (R-Fr., OL, Cartersville HS)… saw action in the Eagles’ 48-21 win Saturday afternoon at Mars Hill as the CNU offense rolled up 388 rushing yards and 437 total yards. Carson-Newman receiving votes but just outside the NCAA D2 top 25 improved to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Eagles play at Limestone Saturday evening.


JOHN SCIFERS — University of West Georgia (R-Jr., PK/P, Woodland HS)… kicked off three times for a 50 yard average and one touchback Saturday as the Wolves beat visiting Mississippi College 35-21 in Gulf South Conference action. UWG (6-3, 4-2) plays at Delta State University this Saturday afternoon.


AVERY SHOWELL — Georgia Tech (R-So., DB, Cartersville HS)… saw action on the kickoff return team Saturday in the Yellow Jackets’ 20-10 Homecoming loss to Pittsburgh. Georgia Tech (2-6, 1-4 ACC) plays at Virginia Saturday afternoon.


JAKE WALKER — Furman University (Jr., TE, Cartersville, GA, Darlington HS)… participated in the 13th-ranked Paladins’ 35-20 Southern Conference win Saturday at Chattanooga. Furman (6-3, 5-1) hosts conference foe VMI Saturday afternoon in Greenville.




VOLLEYBALL



NEDU EVANS — Augusta University (Fr., MH, Cartersville HS)… started all four sets and finished with seven kills, two blocks, and one assist in a 3-1 Peach Belt Conference win Saturday over visiting Flagler College. Augusta (20-7, 4-3) has three road conference matches this week at Georgia College Tuesday, at Francis Marion Friday, and at UNC-Pembroke Saturday.


GRACE HUNTER — Brewton-Parker College (Fr., S, Cartersville HS)… in three losses last week, Hunter had 10 kills vs. Savannah State, three kills and one ace vs. Florida Memorial, and five kills vs. Florida College. The Barons (4-25) have a home match Wednesday night against Fort Valley State before playing at William Carey (MS), Mobile (AL), and Loyola (LA) Friday through Sunday.




SOCCER



EMILY COLLUM — Georgia Southwestern State University (So., F, Adairsville HS)… started and played all 110 minutes of a 0-0 draw Saturday with USC-Aiken. The Hurricanes (3-11-2, 0-8-1 Peach Belt Conference) host Columbus State Wednesday and travel to Lander University Saturday.


HAVYN ISAAC — Georgia Military College (Fr., GK, Adairsville HS)… saw brief action Friday in the Bulldogs’ 3-1 win at South Georgia State CC. GMC (9-7-1, 7-4-1 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) plays in the NJCAA Southeast District Semifinals Thursday evening against undefeated Eastern Florida State (12-0-0) at Gordon State CC. The district championship is Friday afternoon in Barnesville.



KURT MOORE — Birmingham Southern College (Sr., GK, Euharlee, GA, Darlington HS)… made 11 saves in Saturday’s 8-2 Southern Athletic Association tournament quarterfinal loss at Centre College (KY). The Panthers’ season ends with a 6-9-1 record. Moore started 13 games and made 89 saves with a 3.10 goals against average and a .636 saves percentage. He was 6-9-1 in net.



MARISSA MOWRY — Anderson University (So., MF, Cartersville HS)… played 76 minutes as a starter in the Trojans’ 1-0 home loss to conference foe Catawba Saturday. Mowry has started all 14 games this season and has taken two shots. Anderson (7-7, 4-5 South Atlantic Conference) closes out the regular season Wednesday at Queens University (NC).


PAYTON PUTZER — Young Harris College (Jr., MF, Cartersville HS)… entered off the Mountain Lions’ bench, played 31 minutes, and took one shot on goal Wednesday in a 2-0 home loss to North Georgia. She also started Saturday and played 46 minutes in a 3-1 loss at Clayton State. YHC (6-9, 5-5 Peach Belt Conference) closes out the regular season Friday afternoon at home against UNC-Pembroke.


LOGAN VERMAAS — University of North Georgia (Fr., MF, Cass HS)… played the final three minutes Saturday as the Nighthawks defeated visiting Albany State 3-1 in Dahlonega. 18th-ranked UNG (13-2-1, 9-1-1 Peach Belt Conference) finishes the regular season Tuesday with a non-conference match at Emmanuel College and will host the first round of the conference tournament November 12.




SWIMMING


RYLEE MOSS — Old Dominion University (Fr., Adairsville HS)… in the Lady Monarchs’ 177-117 home win Saturday, Moss won the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.91), won the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.91), was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:47.47), placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (59.74), and finished sixth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:15.19). ODU competes next at the West Virginia Invitational in Morgantown November 21-23.





BASKETBALL


JACQUEZ FOUNTAIN — Albany Tech CC (Fr., F, Cass HS)… scored 27 points and had five rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block in a start and 32 minutes during an 83-76 home win over Georgia Gwinnett College Saturday. Fountain also started,scored six points, and grabbed six rebounds with a block in 23 minutes during Friday’s 73-50 home victory over American Basketball Institute. The Titans (2-0) host Florida Gateway College Thursday night and the Brewton Parker JV Saturday afternoon.


WHITNEY HARRIS — Toccoa Falls College (So., G, Woodland HS)… scored nine points on three of six shooting from behind the arc and had one rebound and one steal in a 64-60 win Friday night at Johnson University (TN). She also totaled six points, five rebounds, three assists, and four steals as the Screaming Eagles went 1-2 in games October 23-29. TFC (2-2) beat Judson College (AL) but lost to Florida National University and Truett McConnell. They host Brewton Parker College Tuesday night, Brenau College Friday night, and Covenant College Saturday night.


CARTER HEDDEN — Hocking CC (So., G, Cass HS)… scored one point in a 108-92 win Friday night over Ohio Christian University’s JV team. The Hawks (1-0) play at University of Rio Grande JV Monday night, host University of Cincinnati Clermont Wednesday, travel to Pennsylvania Highlands Friday, and at Westmoreland CC Saturday.


KIMORA McCLINIC — Middle Georgia State University (Jr., G, Cartersville HS)… started against LaGrange College and saw action against Brenau in home wins last Monday and Wednesday. She totaled four points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. MGSU (3-0) hosts Voorhees Tuesday night.


CORIANA McDANIEL — Andrew CC (Fr., G, Adairsville HS)… made the only shot she attempted Saturday — a three-pointer — in the Tigers’ 57-50 home loss to Snead State CC. Andrew (0-1) plays at Gadsden State CC Monday night, hosts Central Georgia Tech Wednesday, and entertains Lurleen Wallace CC Saturday.


DARIUS THROWER — Truett-McConnell University (Sr., G, Excel Christian Academy)… played 26 minutes off the bench, scored eight points, and grabbed one rebound as the Bears beat Toccoa Falls College last Tuesday 71-68. TMU (1-0) hosts St. Andrew University (NC) Thursday, travels to USC-Upstate for an exhibition Friday night, and entertains Pensacola Christian College for Homecoming Saturday afternoon.
