The Woodland girls finished seventh of 20 teams to lead local squads at the 23rd annual Darlington Cross Country Festival. The Adairsville girls placed 16th, and the Tigers finished 23rd of 28 teams in the 5K boys’ race. Pace Academy won the girls’ and boys’ team titles. Cass’ Booker Gearhart (15th, 18:14) had the top individual finish among local runners competing individually.

The Cass Colonels remained unbeaten Friday night, overcoming a strong second-half challenge from Woodland before pulling away for a 42-21 victory at Wildcats Stadium.

The Cartersville Lady Canes secured the only local high school softball win on Thursday, defeating Dalton in Region 7-5A. Adairsville fell to visiting Ridgeland in a Region 7-4A game, while Woodland and Cass lost non-region games in Mableton and Atlanta.

Cartersville volleyball won twice at Woodland on Tuesday night, defeating the host Lady Cats 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-7) in a Region 7-5A match and topping East Paulding (25-15, 25-11) in two straight sets. The wins lifted the Lady Canes to 30-3 overall and 5-0 in region play. Woodland slipped to 7-20 overall and 2-3 in region action.

The Lady Canes plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning, and pitcher Zoie Shiflett tossed a two-hit shutout Tuesday night as Cartersville blanked visiting Villa Rica 3-0.
