  • Cartersville gymnasts host regular season final meet

    April 16, 2025 The Cartersville Lady Canes gymnastics team hosted its final regular season meet of the 2025 season this past Saturday and placed fourth, competing against larger schools from across the state. North Forsyth (104.900) won the five-team competition, followed by Camden County (99.000), Lambert (96.600), Cartersville (94.500), and Brooks County (7.900). Emerie Elrod led Cartersville with a 9.15 on vault. Elrod also scored an 8.6 on floor exercise. Sydney Jackson scored an 8.65 on the vault and 8.1 on the beam. Adalynn Weir contributed an 8.35 on the vault and an 8.0 on the floor. Laney Saunders scored an 8.25 on vault. “This team continues to make us proud,” said Kimberly Mosteller, Cartersville’s head coach and meet director. “Our gymnasts train, compete, and represent Cartersville with pride. Hosting the final meet of the season was a privilege, and we’re thrilled with the strength our athletes showed against some of the state’s best.” “I look forward to building on this year’s success as our gymnastics program continues to grow,” added Mosteller. “Emerie Elrod will represent Cartersville Gymnastics at the GHSA Gymnastics State Preliminary meet next week, competing in the vault.”

  • Tigers, Canes, and Colonels earn diamond victories on Tuesday

    April 15, 2025 On Tuesday night, Adairsville, Cartersville, and Cass garnered region wins on the baseball diamond. ADAIRSVILLE 4, NORTHWEST WHITFIELD 2 Braxton Ryan drove in two runs Tuesday night in the Tigers' win at Northwest Whitfield The Adairsville Tigers climbed to within one game of region leader Northwest Whitfield Tuesday night with a 4-2 home win over the Bruins. Jack Nelson pitched into the sixth inning, not allowing a run to collect the victory. He scattered four hits and three walks in 5-⅔ innings with eight strikeouts. Kaiden Coker (1 IP, 2R, 0ER, 1H, 1BB, 2K) and Jarrett Scott (0.1 IP, 1K) pitched in relief. Scott was credited with a save. Brody Varner (RBI) had two hits for Adairsville. Braxton Ryan (double, sac fly, two RBI), Hudson Parr (RBI), Isaac Burnett (double), Scott, and Nelson added one hit for the Tigers. The loss dropped Northwest Whitfield to 16-12 overall and 12-4 in Region 7-AAA. Adairsville (16-7, 11-5) travels to Tunnel Hill to play the Bruins on Thursday and will host the series finale on Friday. Both games are slated for 5:30 p.m. CARTERSVILLE 16, DALTON 0 Nolan Elrod The Hurricanes secured a home series to begin the Class AAAA state playoffs by winning at Dalton Tuesday night, 16-0. The win by Cartersville means the Canes will be no worse than a No. 2 seed when the state playoffs begin April 23. Cartersville led 9-0 through two innings on Tuesday and finished off the host Catamounts in four innings. Nate Russell pitched all four innings for the Canes and struck out eight. He scattered three hits and one walk. Brayden Logan (four RBI), Thomas Peters, and Tristan McKibben had two hits for the Purple Hurricanes. Julez Pratt hit a two-run homer and finished with four RBI. David Vargas (two RBI), Nolan Elrod (two RBI), Cole Crawford (RBI), and Andrew Purdy contributed one hit. Logan Buchanan, Cameron Cochran, and Cooper Adams added one RBI. The Catamounts slipped to 20-8 overall and 13-6 in Region 7-AAAA. Cartersville (21-7, 17-2) hosts Dalton for a doubleheader on Thursday at 5 p.m. CASS 15, HIRAM 9 Chase Tatum picked up the Colonels' pitching win on Tuesday. The Colonels built an 11-1 lead through four innings Tuesday but then held on for a 15-9 win at Hiram. The Hornets sent eleven to the plate and scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh.  Chase Tatum (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB, 2K) earned the pitching win in relief of Cass starter Jay Sheldon (3 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 5K). Trenton Elario (1.1 IP, 7R, 0ER, 4H, 1BB) and Dawson Warner (0.2 IP, 0R, 1H) also pitched in relief. To pace the Colonels' offense, Zach Stiles had three hits, including two home runs and five RBI. Warner also had three hits. Tatum contributed two hits, including one double. Bailey Berry (two RBI), Sheldon (RBI), and Elario added one hit. Nic Wright, Hunter Lovett, Landon Lamb, and Joey Kane contributed one RBI. Cass (13-14, 8-11) will host Hiram (7-21, 2-17) in a doubleheader on Friday at 5 p.m.   ALLATOONA 11, WOODLAND 3 Sixth-ranked Allatoona won at Woodland on Tuesday, 11-3. The visiting Buccaneers led 4-0 through four innings and added five runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to build an 11-0 lead. Woodland posted three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Austin Daves (4 IP, 7R, 6ER, 7H, 3BB, 3K) made the pitching start for Woodland and suffered the loss. Grant Tidwell (2 IP, 4ER, 5H, 2BB, 2K) and Clayton Wilkes (1 IP, 0R, 1H) pitched in relief for the Wildcats. Alfredo Romo (double), Preston Sorrells, and Lucas Baker had one hit for Woodland. Jake Clowers had two RBIs, and Zaylen Cochran had one. The Buccaneers (25-3, 18-1) host Woodland (14-3, 8-11) for a doubleheader on Friday at 5 p.m.

    April 15, 2025 The Adairsville girls and Cass boys added soccer victories on Tuesday. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 8, RINGGOLD 1 The Lady Tigers led 6-0 by halftime and cruised to an 8-1 non-region win over visiting Ringgold Tuesday night. Ella Edwards scored four goals for Adairsville. Alexa Damer scored a goal and had three assists. Alivia Joslin scored two goals and had one assist. Addi Jerauld scored a goal. Sam Gough, Lily McCormick, and Carly Edwards contributed one assist. The Adairsville girls (12-3) wrap up regular season play on Thursday at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. RINGGOLD 3, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 1 Ringgold scored two goals in the second half Tuesday night to win at Adairsville, 3-1. Ringgold improved to 10-5. Adairsville (6-10) concludes the regular season on Thursday at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. EAST PAULDING 4, WOODLAND GIRLS 3 The Lady Cats lost a non-region home match Tuesday night to East Paulding, 4-3. The visiting Lady Raiders led 4-0 through the first 22 minutes, but Woodland narrowed the margin to 4-2 by halftime. Maddie Weightman scored the first Lady Cats goal off an assist from Libby Morgan in the 28th minute. Then, with three minutes remaining in the first half, Jackie Arias found the back of the net off a feed from Carlie Forman. Midway through the second half, Morgan assisted on a goal by Forman, but the Lady Cats failed to find the equalizer. East Paulding improved to 7-6. The Lady Cats (5-9) conclude their season on Friday at Bremen in a 5:30 p.m. kickoff. EAST PAULDING 1, WOODLAND BOYS 1 (East Paulding wins on PKs) The Wildcats and Raiders battled through a scoreless first half, and each scored a second-half goal on Tuesday before East Paulding won in a penalty kick shootout. Edwin Vazquez scored for Woodland off an assist from Hunter Limbaugh in the 60th minute. East Paulding scored an equalizer five minutes later. The Raiders (7-7) converted three of five shots in the PK session to win. Woodland (5-11) visits Bremen to conclude the season on Friday. CASS BOYS 9, HOLY INNOCENTS 1 The Colonels led 4-1 at the intermission and added five insurance goals in the second half to win Tuesday night at Holy Innocents in Atlanta.  The loss dropped Holy Innocents to an 8-9 record. Cass, who will be a 4-seed in the Class AAAA state playoffs next week, improved to 7-7. The Colonels will play on the road in the state tournament’s first round against the Region 6-AAAA champion. HOLY INNOCENTS 10, CASS GIRLS 0 The Lady Colonels (1-12) lost Tuesday night at Holy Innocents (14-3). The Cass girls will wrap up their season Thursday evening at Pebblebrook. DAWSON COUNTY 2, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 0 The visiting Lady Tigers scored one goal in each half to win at Cartersville Tuesday, 2-0. Dawson County improved to 12-4. Cartersville (6-8) visits North Paulding at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in a final tune-up before the Class AAAA state playoffs next week. The Lady Canes will be a 4-seed and play at Blessed Trinity in Roswell in the first round. DAWSON COUNTY 3, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 2 Dawson County outscored Cartersville 2-1 in the second half to defeat the Canes at Weinman Stadium on Tuesday, 3-2. The two teams went to the intermission knotted 1-1. The Tigers improved to 5-9. Cartersville (3-10) finishes the 2025 season on Thursday at North Paulding.

  • Chargers win at East Georgia State

    April 15, 2025 Georgia Highlands College baseball won the opening game of their series with East Georgia State on Tuesday, 12-3, in Swainsboro.  The Chargers broke open a 1-1 game in the third inning with a six-run outburst that sent ten men to the plate. GHC led 8-1 through four frames and added four insurance runs across the sixth through eighth innings to put the game away. Gavin Webster (4.2 IP, 3ER, 7H, 2BB, 4K) started on the mound for Georgia Highlands and earned the pitching victory. William Homan (1.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K), Nickolaus Kane (1 IP, 0R, 1H), Garrett Goblish (1 IP, 0R, 0H), and Pedro Luciano (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 1K) also pitched for the Chargers. Kenskey Thomas (solo home run) and Ryan Martin (double) led the GHC offense with three hits. Andrew Bishop (sac fly, two RBI), Heath Whitlock (double, RBI), and Ian Fullerton produced two hits. Tyler Phillips (double, two RBI), Wyatt Gatlin (solo home run), and Grayson Godbee (RBI) added one hit. Caden Marcos had one RBI. Georgia Highlands (35-9, 14-6 GCAA) hosts the next three games with the Bobcats (22-22, 8-11) — a single game on Friday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Chargers have a four-game lead over Gordon College in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association standings, with eight conference games remaining in the regular season.

  • Canes rout Raiders to reach another 20-win season

    April 14, 2025 Cartersville head coach Kyle Tucker The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes won both games of a doubleheader with visiting Southeast Whitfield Monday evening at Richard Bell Field with identical 15-0 scores. The Canes won both games in only four innings, and the Raiders managed only one hit in the doubleheader. Nolan Elrod (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 6K) and Avery Shiflett (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 3K) blanked Southeast in the first game. Davis Waddell (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 6K), Collier Jordan (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K), and Cole Crawford (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 3K) combined for a no-hitter in the second game. Cameron Cochran (home run, double, four RBI) and Julez Pratt (home run, sac fly, three RBI) led the Hurricanes with three hits. Crawford (four RBI), David Vargas (triple, three RBI), Thomas Peters (double, two RBI), Andrew Purdy (home run, two RBI), and Tristan McKibben (double) had two hits on Monday. Gavin Renegar (two RBI), Brayden Logan (RBI), Casen Cochran (RBI), Jack Graves (double), Clint Hosea, and Cooper Graves added one hit. Asa Mitcham and Ben Cagle drove in one run. Southeast Whitfield dropped to 4-23 overall and 1-17 in region play. With Monday’s two wins, Cartersville improved to 20-7 overall and 16-2 in Region 7-AAAA. The Canes have also won at least 20 games in 28 of the past 29 seasons and can clinch a home playoff series in the first round of the state playoffs with at least one win against Dalton. The Hurricanes travel to Dalton on Tuesday to begin a three-game series at 5:30 p.m. The regular season will conclude on Friday with a 5 p.m. doubleheader against the Catamounts.

MiLB MASON BARNETT — Las Vegas Aviators (Oakland A’s Triple-A affiliate; 4th-year pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … made a 4-⅓ innings pitching start last Thursday and received no decision in an eventual 7-6 loss at the El Paso Chihuahuas. The 24-year-old righty was charged with six earned runs on eight hits and two walks. He struck out two and left the game trailing 6-3. Las Vegas won four of six games during the week at El Paso and improved to 10-5 in the Pacific Coast League West. The Aviators host the Sugar Land Space Cowboys for six games on Tuesday through Sunday. LOGAN MARTIN — Quad Cities River Bandits (Kansas City Royals High-Class A affiliate; 3rd-year pro; Kentucky; Cartersville HS) … made two pitching starts at home last week against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and was charged with one pitching loss. On April 8, he went 4-⅓ innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts in a 4-0 loss. Last Sunday, Martin worked five innings and allowed one earned run on two hits and two walks with six strikeouts during a 5-1 loss. Quad Cities went 3-3 in the series and finished the week 6-3, leading the Midwest League West Division. The River Bandits have a six-game series at the Beloit Sky Carp on Tuesday through Sunday. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers Triple-A affiliate; 8th-year pro; Cartersville HS) …in time at catcher and second base, the 25-year-old was 5-for-16 at the plate last week, starting five of six home games against the Memphis Red Birds. His hits included one triple and one double with one RBI. He walked twice, scored two runs, and stole two bases as the Sounds won four of the six games in the series. Nashville (7-7) plays a six-game series Tuesday through Sunday at the Charlotte Knights. USL LEAGUE ONE Russell Shealy RUSSELL SHEALY — Union Omaha (USL League One; 8th-year pro; Syracuse; Cartersville resident; Darlington HS) . . . the goalkeeper has one start this season on March 12 with one save and three goals against in a 3-0 loss at the Greenville Triumph. Union Omaha is 1-2 in its first three matches this season and plays San Antonio FC on Tuesday as part of the U.S. Open Cup. Their next USL League One game is Saturday, April 26, at the New Mexico United in Albuquerque. SOFTBALL KILEY ARNOLD — Shorter University (So., Cartersville HS) … went 2-for-7 at the plate in a doubleheader split at Emmanuel University (GA) last Friday. She scored one run. The Hawks (11-28, 8-12 Conference Carolinas) host Erskine College (SC) for two conference games on Monday and Southern Wesleyan University (SC) for a league doubleheader on Wednesday. HAYLEE DISHMON — Georgia Highlands College (So., Cass HS) … appeared in three games for the Chargers last week and was 3-for-10 at the plate, including one walk and three stolen bases. MEGAN GREGORY — Campbell University (So., Adairsville HS) … made two pitching starts last week and picked up two wins, improving her season record to 9-3.  Gregory scattered five hits and four walks last Saturday as the Camels beat Hampton University 10-1 in five innings. On April 8, she tossed a four-hit shutout in Campbell’s 1-0 home victory over Coastal Carolina. She fanned five and walked six in her complete game performance, finishing the week with a 0.58 ERA and ten strikeouts. As a result, Gregory was selected CAA Softball  Co-Pitcher of the Week, giving her the honor in consecutive weeks. The Camels (30-11, 15-3 Coastal Athletic Association) visit East Carolina University on Tuesday and host a three-game conference series with Drexel University on Friday and Saturday. ANSLEY HIGHT — Reinhardt University (So., Cass HS) … in the Eagles’ six wins last week — two each over Truett-McConnell University, Bluefield University (VA), and Columbia College (SC) — she was 9-for-16 at the plate, including two home runs, one triple, one double, one walk, five runs, and eight RBI. He allowed four earned runs on eight hits, one walk, and one hit batsman. Wilson struck out six. He was charged with the pitching loss at West Florida. The Cougars (22-18, 12-9 Peach Belt Conference) visit Middle Georgia State on Tuesday and play a three-game series at Georgia College on Thursday through Saturday. BEACH VOLLEYBALL LAUREN LAWSON — University of South Carolina (Fr., Cartersville HS) … paired with Kennedy Westendorff to win two Line 5 matches as the Gamecocks finished 3-1 at the LSU Battle at the Bayou this past weekend. The USC duo won by identical 21-16 and 21-18 scores during a 4-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin and a 4-1 team win over Tulane. South Carolina also defeated Houston Christian and lost to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi during the weekend, but Lawson was not in the lineup. The Gamecocks (11-14, 0-3 CCSA) will host the Palmetto Invitational on Friday and Saturday, facing Florida Gulf Coast, Georgia State, Jacksonville, and Coastal Carolina. TENNIS EMILY BUSH — University of North Georgia (Jr., Cartersville HS) … won her Line 6 singles match 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 on April 8 as the Nighthawks beat 16th-ranked West Alabama 4-1 at the Rome Tennis Center. Bush and Linn Goerdes were trailing 6-5 in their doubles set when the team match was clinched. This past Saturday, she won 6-2, 6-0 at Line 5 singles as 11th-ranked UNG won 6-1 at Georgia College. She again paired with Goerdes at Line 2 doubles and won 6-1 in Milledgeville. UNG (13-6, 3-1 Peach Belt Conference) hosts 14th-ranked Columbus State University on Monday. The Nighthawks will play 22nd-ranked Mississippi College on Thursday in Montgomery and host Georgia Southwestern on Saturday. EMILY SURCEY — Samford University (Sr., Cass HS) … teamed with Sara Erenda to win 6-3 at Line 1 doubles last Thursday in a 5-2 team loss at Mercer University. She also lost 2-6, 1-6 at Line 1 singles. Surcey suffered a narrow 6-7, 5-7 loss this past Saturday at Line 1 singles in a 4-3 team loss at UT-Chattanooga. She and Erenda also lost at Line 1 doubles, 2-6. Samford (11-10) opens the Southern Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Champions Club in Chattanooga against third-seeded Wofford. BRYCE VAN ORDER — Piedmont University (Grad student, Woodland HS) … won his Line 1 singles match 6-0, 6-2 as the Lions won at LaGrange College 7-0 last Friday. Also, on Friday in LaGrange, he lost 3-6, 0-6 at Line 2 singles in the Lions’ 2-5 team loss to the University of California-Santa Cruz. On Wednesday, Piedmont (11-10, 4-2 Collegiate Conference of the South) has a non-conference match at Centre College (KY). The CCS Tournament will be held in Chattanooga on April 24-26. The Vikings will participate in the Mountain Laurel Open on Saturday in Sewanee, Tennessee. McKINLEY CHAPPELL — Berry College (Jr., Woodland HS) … finished 18th (16:12.97) in the 5000-meter run last Saturday at the Berry Field Day and Invitational. HAYDEN CAGLE — Berry College (Sr., Cartersville HS) … placed 14th (131-2) in the javelin throw, 23rd ((38-11) in the shot put,  and 30th (110-2) in the hammer throw at the Vikings’ Field Day and Invitational. Berry competes on Saturday at the Mountain Laurel Open in Sewanee, Tennessee. JUNE DeLAUDER — Reinhardt University (Fr., Cass HS) … finished 14th (17.63) in the 100-meter hurdles at the Berry College Field Day and Invitational. The Eagles will be at the Appalachian Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships on Thursday through Saturday in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. ANDY FORSYTH — Berry College (Fr., Woodland HS) … placed fifth (1:58.05) in the 800-meter run and 13th (4:06.40) in the 1500-meter run at the Vikings’ Field Day and Invitational. Next for Berry is the Sewanee Mountain Laurel Open on Saturday. TYLER JONES — University of West Georgia (So., Woodland HS) … placed 29th (16:28.75) in the 5000-meter run this past weekend’s Berry College Field Day and Invitational. The Wolves are back in action on Friday at the Georgia Tech Invitational. KENDRICK PRICE — Troy University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … finished 39th (11.13) in the 100-meter dash and 41st in the 200-meter dash at the University of Alabama Crimson Tide Invitational last weekend in Tuscaloosa. The Trojans run on Friday at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta. JOE WOMACK — Furman University (Fr., Cartersville resident, Darlington HS) … finished 4th (49.51) in the 400-meter dash last weekend at the Asheville Bulldog Invitational.   • Colonels and Wildcats split Saturday's doubleheader

    April 12, 2025 Alfredo Romo Cass and Woodland split a region doubleheader on Saturday, with the Colonels winning 11-7 before the Wildcats salvaged the final game of the three-game series with a 15-2 victory. The Colonels won the series opener earlier in the week. Unfortunately, the two local teams face long odds to qualify for the Class 4A state playoffs with only three games remaining in the regular season. Allatoona and Cartersville sit atop the Region 7-AAAA standings at 17-1 and 14-2, respectively. Dalton is third at 13-5 in region games, with Cedartown fourth with an 8-10 region mark. Woodland (8-10 in Region 7-AAAA) and Cass (7-11) seem to be in a position to potentially overtake fourth-place Cedartown for the final playoff spot. However, the Bulldogs' last three-game region series is against Southeast Whitfield, a team with just one region win this season. Hunter Lovett In their 11-7 victory on Saturday, Cass scored six runs in the top of the third to lead 6-0. Woodland responded with four runs in the fourth to narrow the margin to 6-4. The Colonels added two runs in the fifth and three in the seventh to secure the win. Woodland posted single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh. In Woodland’s 15-2 win, the Wildcats led 10-0 after only two innings, and Cass committed nine errors. Hunter Lovett collected the pitching win for Cass in Game 1. He yielded four unearned runs on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts in a four-inning start. Nic Wright (2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 2BB, 1K) and Chase Tatum (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 1K) covered the final three frames on the mound for the Colonels. Lucas Baker was the starter and winning pitcher in Game 2 for the Wildcats. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Tatum led the Cass bats with four hits, including two doubles and five RBI in the two games. Zach Stiles (two RBI) and Lovett (RBI) also had four hits. Jacob Johnson (RBI) and Trenton Elario contributed three hits for the Colonels in the doubleheader. Landon Lamb finished the day with two hits. Wright and Dawson Warner added one hit and one RBI. Six Wildcats had two-hit days, including Preston Sorrells (triple, sac fly, two RBI), Sammy Ray (three RBI), Ben Turcotte (two RBI), Zaylen Cochran (RBI), Alfredo Romo (RBI), and Conner Lujan. Baker, Jake Clowers (double), and Grant Tidwell added one hit and one RBI. Tommy Risner contributed one RBI. Cass (12-14, 7-11) begins a three-game series with Hiram at the Hornets home field on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Colonels will host a doubleheader on Friday to wrap up regular season action. Woodland (14-12, 8-10) hosts region-leading and sixth-ranked Allatoona on Tuesday and will close out the regular season in Acworth on Friday with a doubleheader.

  • GHC baseball drops doubleheader, splits series with Gordon State

    April 12, 2025 Tyler Phillips had three hits on Saturday, including one homer, one double, and three RBI. The Georgia Highlands College Chargers dropped both games of a home doubleheader on Saturday, falling 9-4 and 9-8 to the Gordon State College Highlanders.  The visitors' doubleheader sweep earned a series split with Georgia Highlands, who won 21-4 and 5-4 this past Tuesday and Thursday. The Chargers used eight pitchers in the two losses and were outhit 27 to 17 in the two games. Tyler Phillips (home run, double, three RBI) and Caden Marcos (triple) had three hits to pace the Georgia Highlands offense on Saturday. Kenskey Thomas (three RBI), Ian Fullerton (RBI), Ryan Martin, and Grason Godbee contributed two hits. Heath Whitlock (double, two RBI), Andrew Bishop (two RBI), and Joe Johnson added one hit. The Highlanders improved to 20-19 overall and 8-9 in conference play. Georgia Highlands (34-7, 13-4) visits East Georgia State on Tuesday and will host the Bobcats for a single game on Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday.

  • Chargers split Saturday softball doubleheader with Highlanders

    April 12, 2025 Hayden Joyner scattered six hits and three walks while striking out four in the Chargers' 4-3 win over Gordon State on Saturday. Georgia Highlands College softball split a home doubleheader on Saturday with Gordon State, winning 4-3 in the opener before dropping the second game 5-4. The visiting Highlanders opened Game 1 with three runs in the first inning, but GHC pitcher Hayden Joyner settled in and shut out Gordon College the rest of the way. The Chargers scored a single run in the second inning and pushed ahead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Joyner tossed a seven-inning complete game to collect the pitching victory. She scattered six hits and three walks while striking out four. In Game 2, the Highlanders scored two runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed. The Chargers cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first, but Gordon added two runs in the fourth to lead 4-1. GHC narrowed the margin to 4-2 in the sixth before Gordon secured the win with an insurance run in the seventh. Georgia Highlands scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and had the potential tying run on base, but the game ended on an infield groundout. Three GHC pitchers toiled in the second game. Athens Hudson (3.2 IP, 4ER, 8H, 1BB, 1K) started in the circle and was tagged with the pitching loss. Grace Kendrick (2.1 IP, 0R, 2H, 1K) and Hannah Mounce (1 IP, 1ER, 2H) also pitched. Maci Andrews had three hits — two doubles and one triple — with one RBI to lead the Chargers offense in the two games. Ahmani Green and Emma Darrow finished the day with two hits and two RBI. Abbi Hall (double), Mary Catherine Kimball (two doubles, two RBI), and Emmalee Freeman contributed two hits. Haylee Dishmon added one hit. With Saturday’s split, the Highlanders are 17-21 overall and 10-2 in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association play. Gordon College trails first-place Georgia Military in the conference standings by two games. Georgia Highlands (28-12, 9-3) is one game behind Gordon in the league standings. The Chargers have a conference doubleheader at Georgia Military College on Thursday.

  • Tigers wrap up sweep of Ramblers

    April 11, 2025 Coach Billy Roper and the Tigers have won eight of nine to climb in the Region 7-AAA standings. Braxton Ryan went 4-for-4 at the plate, and pitcher Kaiden Coker tossed six shutout innings as the Adairsville Tigers won the first game of a doubleheader at LaFayette on Friday 8-2. The doubleheader was slated for the Ramblers’ home field after a Thursday rainout and wet field conditions at Adairsville on Friday. The Tigers scored two runs in the second inning to grab an early lead in the opening game. Adairsville added one run in the third, two more in the fourth, and three insurance runs in the fifth. The Ramblers avoided a shutout by salvaging two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Coker scattered three hits and issued no walks in six innings. He struck out two. Westin Barfield allowed two runs in the seventh on four hits. He recorded one strikeout. Ryan’s four hits included one double and three RBI. Ethan Long (double, RBI) and Jarrett Scott contributed two hits. Brody Varner (two RBI), Harrison Cole (triple), and Isaac Burnett added one hit. In the second game, Hudson Parr tossed a six-inning gem, and Scott retired all three batters faced in the seventh inning to blank the Ramblers 5-0. Adairsville scored five times in the fourth inning to take control. After Varner singled to open the fourth, Burnett bunted him to scoring position, and Barfield produced an RBI single. Four additional hits and a walk produced four more runs for the Tigers. Jack Nelson (RBI), Barfield (RBI), and Scott (double, RBI) led the Adairsville offense with two hits. Peyton Bowen (RBI), Long, and Varner added one hit. The losses dropped the Ramblers to 12-14 overall and 7-11 in Region 7-AAA. Adairsville (15-7, 10-5), currently third in the region standings, has three region games remaining. The Tigers host first-place Northwest Whitfield on Tuesday, visit the Bruins on Thursday, and host the final regular season game on Friday. Each game in the series is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start.

  • Chargers rally past Highlanders 

    April 10, 2025 Georgia Highlands trailed 4-1 heading to the eighth inning Thursday in Barnesville but rallied over the final two innings to win 5-4.  Five singles in the top of the eighth produced three GHC runs, and Ryan Martin’s sacrifice fly in the ninth drove home Wyatt Gatlin for the Chargers’ game-winning run. Andrew Arnold (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H) picked up the pitching victory in relief. Hunter Ward (1 IP, 0R, 2K) earned a save with a scoreless ninth. Max Eichenberger (6.2 IP, 4R, 3ER, 6H, 2BB, 8K) made the GHC pitching start. Brodie Chestnutt (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 1K) also pitched in relief. Ian Fullerton led the Chargers’ offense with three hits. Kenskey Thomas and Andrew Bishop (RBI) finished with two hits. Grayson Godbee (two RBI), Ryan Martin (sac fly RBI), Heath Whitlock, Gatlin, and Caden Marcos added one hit. Tyler Phillips drove in one run with a sacrifice fly. The loss dropped Gordon College to 20-19 overall and 8-9 in conference action. Georgia Highlands (34-7, 13-4 GCAA) continues the series with Gordon College with a doubleheader on Saturday at Bentley Field in Cartersville.

  • GHC softball wins at Andrew College

    April 10, 2025 The Chargers won both games of a doubleheader at Andrew College Wednesday to complete a four-game season sweep of the Tigers. Georgia Highlands won 18-0 and 15-0 in Cuthbert. Maci Andrews and Grace Kendrick completed the pitching duties. Both wins were in five innings. Andrews tossed a one-hitter with two walks and four strikeouts in the opener. Kendrick scattered four hits and one walk with one strikeout in the second game. Emmalee Freeman and Ally Graden led the Chargers’ offense with six hits. Freeman had a home run, four doubles, and six RBI. Graden had three doubles and four RBI. Ahmani Green (home run, three RBI), Emma Darrow (triple, RBI), Abbi Hall (RBI), and Mary Catherine Kimball contributed three hits in the doubleheader. Hailey Love (two doubles, four RBI), Haylee Dishmon (three RBI), and Cayden Warren (RBI) had two hits. Faith Gauthier (RBI), Abbey Yates, Raeghan Thompson, and Andrews (sac fly, triple, three RBI) added one hit. Georgia Highlands (28-12, 9-3 GCAA) hosts a doubleheader with Gordon State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
