Girls soccer kicks off season


The local girls' soccer schedule kicked off this past week with both Cass and Woodland picking up a couple of wins. The Lady Colonels (2-0) opened Tuesday (Feb. 10) with a 4-1 victory at Northwest Whitfield and shutout Cedartown 9-0 on Friday (Feb. 13). Coach Phil Phillips was pleased with his team's defensive play during opening week. He specifically noted the play of keeper Rachael Jackson and the defensive work of Macy Wright, Ashllyn Dougharty, Isela Moraga, Emily Lowe, and Savannah Hardin. The Lady Colonels offense was led by freshman, Kyla Michienzi, along with Stephanie Robledo, Sidney Vermaas, Laken Bennett, and Hardin. Next for the Lady Colonels is a home match Friday (Feb. 20) against Cartersville. Woodland opened the season with wins Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 9 and 10) over Coosa and Model. The Lady Wildcats (2-0-1) defeated Coosa 7-1 and Model 8-2 before playing East Paulding to a 1-1 tie on Friday (Feb. 13). Woodland's next match is Tuesday (Feb. 17). The Lady Wildcats host Region 7-AAAA opponent Dalton at 5:30pm. Adairsville hosts Bremen Tuesday (Feb. 17) at 5:30pm to open their 2015 campaign.
