Hurricanes take series lead with 12-1 rout of Wayne County


The Cartersville Hurricanes’ baseball club made a profound statement in Game 1 of their Class 4A quarterfinal series at Wayne County Wednesday afternoon (May 13).

The ‘Canes routed the host Yellow Jackets 12-1 to open the Elite 8 series.

Cartersville struck for a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning, got a three-run homer from Trent Frazier in the fifith, and put the game away with six more runs in the seventh to blast the Wayne County Yellow Jackets 12-1 in Game 1 of the Class 4A quarterfinal series between the two schools.

‘Canes freshman pitcher, Anthony Siegler, scattered three hits, one walk, and struck out six to earn a complete game victory. The lone Wayne County run scored in the bottom of the seventh and was unearned.

Frazier tallied six RBI in Game 1 on three hits and a walk to ignite the Hurricanes’ offense. Jacob Fowler also had three hits and one RBI.

Devin Warner and Parker Tidwell (RBI) added a pair of hits, while Lane Wilson (2 RBI) and Carrington Evans (RBI) added a hit apiece.

Game 2 of the series is set to begin at approximately 4:10pm Wednesday. The winner of the best-of-three series will host Buford in the state semi-finals next week. Buford swept Locust Grove on Tuesday, 10-0 and 8-5. The other semi-final will feature Whitewater -- who swept North Hall Tuesday 8-2 and 10-1 -- against the winner of the Veterans vs. St. Pius X series that concludes with a third game Wednesday. Veterans and St. Pius X split a doubleheader on Tuesday.
