Team Georgia to play for third place at Sunbelt

A loss Tuesday (June 9) to Team Arizona in both teams’ next-to-last round robin game knocked the Georgia Dugout Club’s Junior Team Georgia out of contention for a spot in the championship game.

Georgia roared back, however, in their second game Tuesday to overwhelm Team Oklahoma Blue 16-1 in a 3-inning mercy rule final.

Local high school standouts, Elliott Anderson of Cartersville High School and Lane Griffith of Adairsville High School, had key contributions in the final round-robin victory.

Team Georgia, playing as the home team, scored seven runs in the first innings and nine in the second inning to complete the blow out.

Anderson hit a 3-run homer in the second inning and scored a pair of runs. Griffith walked twice and scored both times in two plate appearances.

Georgia was limited to only four hits in the loss to Arizona while their opponent rapped out five extra base hits and eleven total.

Arizona broke open a close game with a six-run fourth inning.

Team Georgia (6-3 in the ten team round robin) will have a rematch with Team Arizona (7-2) Wednesday afternoon in the tournament’s third place game.

Team Tennessee (8-1) will play Team Texas (7-2) Wednesday night for the Sunbelt Classic title.

Team Mississippi (6-3) plays Team Colorado (5-4) for fifth place. Team Missouri (3-6) plays Team Canada (2-7) for 7th place, and Oklahoma Gold plays Oklahoma Blue for 9th place. The 21st annual Sunbelt Classic Baseball Series is being played in McAlester, Oklahoma and at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton, Oklahoma.
