Team Georgia falls to Team Arizona in bronze medal game


The Georgia Dugout Club’s Junior Team Georgia lost 8-3 to Team Arizona Wednesday night in the bronze medal game of the 2015 Sunbelt Classic Baseball Series in Oklahoma.


The 21st annual baseball tournament is hosted by McAlester, Oklahoma and Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton, Oklahoma.


Local high school standouts, Elliott Anderson (Cartersville HS) and Lane Griffith (Adairsville HS) are members of Junior Team Georgia for 2015. The two were even battery mates for a win over Team Texas earlier in the tournament.


Georgia scored first in the top of the third, but Arizona responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.


Georgia tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fourth, but Team Arizona added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth and never looked back.


Anderson played first base in this game. He singled and scored in the fourth inning. He was also hit by a pitch in the fifth to finish the contest 1-for-2.


Team Georgia managed seven hits, but Arizona’s ten-hit attack was more productive.


Nick Wilhite had a double and Austin Wilhite homered in the fifth for Team Georgia’s only extra base hits.


Team Georgia went 6-3 in round robin play and qualified for the bronze medal game as the tournament’s fourth seed. Arizona finished 8-2 including a pair of wins over Georgia.


Team Texas and Team Tennessee were the top two seeds and were playing Wednesday night (June 10) for the 2015 Sunbelt Classic title.
