Adairsville, Woodland open softball seasons


Adairsville opened play at the Model Invitational in Rome Friday night (Aug. 7) with a 5-3 victory over Rockmart and an 8-0 loss to Trion.

Adairsville scored four times in the top of the third against Rockmart to take a 5-2 lead, then held on for their season’s first win. Loren Harris struck out nine and scattered four hits over five innings of work in the circle to earn the pitching win. Seven different players had one hit each for Adairsville, including Harris, Natalie Burrow, Alyssa Hughs, Hannah Knapp, Morgan Deboard, and Havyn Isaac.

In the loss to Trion, the Lady Tigers (1-1) managed only one hit by Emily Collum. Hughs took the pitching loss despite yielding only one earned run on nine hits with no walks. Adairsville committed three errors. Hughs struck out six. The Lady Tigers continue play in the Model Invitational Saturday, August 8 and will travel to Calhoun on Tuesday (Aug. 11) for a 5:30pm start.


NORTHWEST WHITFIELD 4, WOODLAND 2


Woodland softball dropped a 4-2 decision to Northwest Whitfield Friday night (Aug. 7) at home in the regular season opener for both teams. Northwest scored single runs in the first two innings, but Woodland matched them with single runs in the bottom of the second and third frames. After a scoreless fourth inning, the visiting Lady Bruins scored the deciding runs on a walk and a two-run homer. Northwest’s second inning run also came on a homerun.


Taylor Calhoun drove in Keri Cagle in the second for the Lady Wildcats’ first run. Kylie Knox singled and later scored on a passed ball in the third for Woodland. Lily Watson suffered the pitching loss for the ‘Cats. She allowed 3 earned runs on seven hits and five walks. Watson struck out three. Woodland (0-1) is scheduled for three games next week. The Lady Wildcats will host Cartersville Monday (Aug. 10) at 5pm before traveling to Dalton Tuesday (Aug. 11) for a 5:55pm start. Cass visits Woodland Thursday (Aug. 13) for a 7pm start.
