Lady Hurricanes' softball splits openers in tourney

Cartersville softball split a pair of games Friday and improved to 6-6 on the year as the Lady Hurricanes opened play in the Allatoona Buccaneer Bash. Cartersville defeated North Cobb 5-4, but lost to Lowndes 14-1.


The Lady Canes fell behind early to North Cobb, but regained the lead with a run in the second inning and two more in the third.


North Cobb added single runs in the fifth and sixth frames to regain the lead, 4-3, but the Hurricanes scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to escape with a 5-4 win.


Tara Mathis picked up the pitching victory in the circle for the ‘Canes. She allowed only one earned run on seven hits. She walked one and struck out two.


Kennedy Bailey had three hits and an RBI at the plate for Cartersville. Megan Morneau added a pair of hits and an RBI. Macee Cole (RBI), Mathis, Paris Poston, Kayla Stepheson, and Jolea Prokop had one hit each.


Lowndes scored seven runs in the first two innings and never looked back on their way to a 14-1 defeat of Cartersville.


Senior Haley Fowler blasted a pair of homeruns, including a grand slam to lead the Lady Vikings’ offense. Fowler finished the game with seven RBI. Madison May added three RBI for Lowndes.


Paris Poston had a pair of hits, including a double for Cartersville. Madison McKinney drove in a run with a double. Taylor Waits had the Lady Hurricanes’ other base hit.


Colbi Ballard took the pitching loss in three and one-third innings of work. Mathis also pitched an inning and two-thirds in relief.


Cartersville faces South Cobb and an opponent to be determined on Saturday afternoon’s tournament schedule.
