Scifers leads Lady Cats to home win

Woodland sophomore Lindsay Scifers (photo) ran to a first place finish and led her team to a winning finish Tuesday as Woodland hosted Excel Christian, Riverwood, Adairsville, and Rome at the Woodland High School home course.

Nathan Jernigan of Rome won the boys race and Riverwood won the boys team event just ahead of second-place Woodland.

Freshman Cheyenne Spinks was the next top finisher for the Lady Wildcats, followed by teammates Elizabeth Roberson, Elizabeth Vasquez, Ally Landrum, and Casey Bolan. In the boys race, the Wildcats were led by Jacob Glitz. He was followed by Julian Rocket, Noah Warren, Jonathan Holloway, and Heath Tyree.

Woodland coach Matthew Landolt admitted this was a unique race and was as much for training purposes as anything. “Just about every team has a big weekend race coming up, so none of the runners really pushed themselves,” noted Landolt. “Don’t get me wrong. We raced, but no one was pushing the limit all the way.”

Rome girls finished second in the meet. Excel Christian girls were third.

Behind Riverwood and Woodland in the boys race, Rome finished third. Adairsville and Excel Christian rounded out the field.
