Woodland wrestling places second in Class AAAAA

The Woodland Wildcats’ wrestling team added a fifth consecutive runner-up finish at the GHSA Class AAAAA State Team Duals Championship Saturday.

Woodland reached the championship match for a sixth straight season with relatively easy wins over Effingham County 57-18 in Thursday’s opening round, followed by a 53-18 win over Jones County in the quarterfinals and a 56-12 win over Allatoona Friday in the semifinals.

Defending champion and top-seed, Camden County, defeated Woodland in the finals 59-8.

Woodland has now reached the state championship match each year since winning the title in 2011.

In the finals match against Camden, Dawson Woods and Logan Sims earned wins at 126-pounds and 132-pounds, but Camden controlled the remainder of the match with seven pins over the final nine matches.

Other state champions crowned on Saturday included Archer in Class 6A, Gilmer 4A, Jefferson 3A, Social Circle 2A, and Commerce in Class A.

Cass, who finished as Area 7AAAAA runner-up to Woodland, won four of five matches at the state tournament to finish third. The Colonels avenged their only loss of the tournament Saturday when they defeated Clarke Central in the third place match.
