GHC softball drops openers; hosting Border Battle


Georgia Highlands’ softball is hosting the Border Battle tournament this weekend (Feb. 5-7) and is scheduled to play a total of five games during the three day event.


Along with GHC, Shelton State (AL), Cleveland State (TN), Roane State (TN), East Georgia State, and West Georgia Tech will participate in games at Hamilton Crossing Park.


The Chargers opened play Friday with a pair of losses in a doubleheader with Shelton State, losing 4-2 and 3-2.


Highlands managed only a pair of hits in the opener, but led 2-1 heading into the final frame. Shelton State scored three times in the top of the seventh to come-from-behind.


Rebecca Meade took the complete game pitching loss for the Chargers. She allowed four earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out ten.

In Game 2, GHC led 1-0 after one inning and 2-1 after three innings, before yielding single runs in the fourth and seventh frames. Brianna Fickes had a pair of hits and two RBI to lead the Chargers’ offense. Madison Gianfala, Ashley Jordan, and Kaleigh Mobley also had hits.


Natalie Pederson suffered the loss in the pitching circle. She allowed a pair of earned runs on eight hits and four walks in a complete game performance. She struck out four.


Georgia Highlands (0-2) plays Cleveland State Saturday at 3pm and has a doubleheader against Roane State Sunday at 11am.
