Update on local athletes playing college softball and baseball


College athletes from the Cartersville and Bartow County area continue to make important contributions to their respective athletic programs across the Southeastern United States in softball and baseball.

Note: Swimming, tennis, track and field, wrestling, and basketball ran as a separate article this week. Division I baseball has not started.


SOFTBALL



BETHANY BALLARD — Armstrong State University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . catcher, has appeared in four of 12 games for the Pirates and has one hit (.333) with a pair of RBI. ASU is 8-4 on the season and will host Mount Olive (NC) and Queens (NC) for a pair of games each Feb. 20-21.


TAYLOR BRASELTON — Reinhardt University (Jr., Woodland HS) . . . As a leadoff hitting centerfielder, Braselton is 5-for-13 (.385) in four games for the Eagles with one RBI and a pair of walks. She has six putouts and an assist defensively. Reinhardt has started the season 4-0. Reinhardt plays four games Feb. 19-20 in the Auburn-Montgomery Invitational with seventh-ranked Mobile, Faulkner, ninth-ranked William Carey, and top-ranked Auburn-Montgomery.


SYDNEY FLOWERS — Reinhardt University (Jr., Woodland HS) . . . the Eagles’ third baseman has started three of four games and scored a run as Reinhardt has opened the season 4-0. Reinhardt plays four games Feb. 19-20 in the Auburn-Montgomery Invitational with seventh-ranked Mobile, Faulkner, ninth-ranked William Carey, and top-ranked Auburn-Montgomery.


LACEY FRITZ — Southeastern Louisiana University (Jr., Woodland HS) . . . has appeared in four games, starting three as SLU has started the season 5-1. Fritz is 1-for-7 with a pair of walks. The Lady Lions host Alabama A&M Feb. 19-20 in a four-game series and Mississippi State Feb. 22.


SAVANNA HUTCHINS — Cleveland State CC (Fr., Cass HS) . . . one plate appearance in the Cougars first four games. CSCC has started the season 4-0 and will host the University of the Cumberlands JV Feb. 18 in a doubleheader.


HUNTER IRVIN — Reinhardt University (Fr., Cartersville HS) . . . has a hit and two RBI in a pair of plate appearances for the Lady Eagles who have started 4-0 with a pair of wins over both Georgetown College (KY) and Taylor University (IN) while hosting the season opening Reinhardt Invitational. Reinhardt plays four games Feb. 19-20 in the Auburn-Montgomery Invitational with seventh-ranked Mobile, Faulkner, ninth-ranked William Carey, and top-ranked Auburn-Montgomery.

KAILAH RAIN — Embry-Riddle University (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . has started the season 6-for-17 (.353) with six runs scored and an RBI for the 6-0 Eagles. ERAU is scheduled to host Saint Leo University in a three game Sunshine States Conference series Feb. 19-20 before Dominican College visits Daytona Beach for a doubleheader Feb. 23.


TAYLOR WEEKS — Reinhardt University (Jr., Adairsville HS) . . . as a starter at shortstop, Weeks is 3-for-11 (.273) with three RBI and a pair of walks through the Eagles’ first four games. Reinhardt plays four games Feb. 19-20 in the Auburn-Montgomery Invitational with seventh-ranked Mobile, Faulkner, ninth-ranked William Carey, and top-ranked Auburn-Montgomery.


RANDI WIMPY — Reinhardt University (Sr., Woodland HS) . . . hitting in the No. 3 spot, the senior catcher has started the season 6-for-12 (.500) with five RBI, a homerun, four extra-base hit, and four walks. The Eagles have started the season 4-0 and will play four games Feb. 19-20 in the Auburn-Montgomery Invitational with seventh-ranked Mobile, Faulkner, ninth-ranked William Carey, and top-ranked Auburn-Montgomery.


ANNALYN YANTIS — Samford University (Fr., Cartersville HS) . . . made her first appearance Sunday, pitching a shutout inning in a 10-1 win over Belmont University. The Bulldogs started the season 2-3 at the Sand Dollar Classic in Gulf Shores, AL. Samford plays four games Feb. 19-21 in the USA Invitational in Mobile, AL where they will face SIU-Edwardsville, Southern Miss, 25th-ranked South Alabama, and Mississippi State.




BASEBALL


CLIFTON DEMPSEY — Maryville College (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . has 7 plate appearances and has appeared in six games for the Scots including one start at second base. Dempsey has a pair of hits (.333 BA) that include a double and a run batted in. Maryville has started the season 5-2 and hosts MacMurray College in a three-game series Feb. 20-21.



BO EDWARDS — University North Georgia (R-Sr., Adairsville HS) . . . has one start and has appeared in three games for the Nighthawks who are 6-2 to start the year. Edwards went 1-for-4 with a double vs. Valdosta State Jan. 30 and is 1-for-7 (.143) for the season. North Georgia has a Peach Belt Conference, three game series in Albany, GA with Georgia Southwestern University Feb. 20-21.


BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Georgia Highlands CC (Soph., Cass HS) . . . the Chargers’ outfielder is 9-for-33 (.273) with a pair of RBI and five runs scored in nine games. Etheridge also has two stolen bases. GHC is 5-4 and scheduled to host Cleveland State (TN) Feb. 17 before facing St. Louis CC (MO) Feb. 20-21 at LakePoint in Emerson.


HARRISON HATFIELD — Shorter University (Soph, Cartersville HS) . . . has two plate appearances for the Hawks who are 5-3 to begin the year, including a four-game sweep of LeMoyne-Owen College Feb. 12-13. Shorter travels to Albany State Feb. 16 and Union University for a three-game Gulf South Conference series Feb. 20-21.


EVAN HILTON — Georgia College (R-Jr., Woodland HS) . . . the southpaw worked two-thirds of an inning in a 19-3 win over Albany State Feb. 14 yielding an earned run on one hit and three walks. The Bobcats are 3-3 and travel to Valdosta State Feb. 17 before hosting 37th-ranked Flagler College in a three-game Peach Belt Conference series Feb. 19-21.


BRADLEY HOOD — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., Cass HS) . . . the right hand pitcher has made a pair of appearances with two strikeouts in 1 and 1/3 innings pitched. The Chargers are 5-4 and scheduled to host Cleveland State (TN) Feb. 17 before facing St. Louis CC (MO) Feb. 20-21 at LakePoint in Emerson.


TRIPP JAMIESON — Univ. of the Cumberlands (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . has started the year 4-for-7 (.571 BA) with a double, a homerun, and seven RBI. The Patriots won two of three in their opening series with Brescia University at LakePoint. UC is scheduled to host Union College (KY) Feb. 17 and will play a four-game, home series with Ohio State University-Lima Feb. 20-21.


SEAN McDERMOTT — Cleveland State CC (Fr., Adairsville HS) . . . starting at 1B or DH and hitting in the clean-up spot, McDermott is 7-for-21 (.333) to start the year with three doubles and five RBI. CSCC is 4-2 and plays at Georgia Highlands Feb. 17 before hosting a three-game series with Vincennes University Feb. 20-21.


HUNTER OSBORN — Reinhardt University (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . the RHP is 1-0 in a pair of starts for the Eagles. He has eight strikeouts in 9.2 innings pitched and a 1.86 ERA. Reinhardt (7-1) travels to Faulkner University Feb. 16; will host University of Saint Francis (IN) in a three-game series Feb. 19-20; and hosts Goshen College (IN) for a single game Feb. 21.



MASON ROBINSON — Wallace State-Dothan CC (Soph., Woodland HS) . . . playing in the outfield, Robinson has started the year 2-for-18 (.167 BA) through five games with a double and a pair of stolen bases. The Governors, 5-1 and riding a five-game win streak, play at Enterprise State CC Feb. 16 and play a three game series at West Georgia Tech CC Feb. 19-21.


TRISTON SMITH — Young Harris College (Soph., Adairsville HS) . . . made one appearance as a pinch runner for the Mountain Lions, Feb. 14 in a 10-7 loss to Newberry College. YHC is 4-2 on the season and plays at 14th-ranked University of West Georgia before opening Peach Belt Conference play at home Feb. 19-21 against Columbus State University.


TYLER WILL — Berry College (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . the RHP has appeared in two games, allowing two hits in two innings while recording a save against Guilford College Feb. 13. The Vikings are 5-0 and play at Emory Feb. 16 prior to hosting Fontbonne University (MO) Feb. 20-21.


ASA WILLIAMS — Reinhardt University (Sr., Cartersville HS) . . . the Eagles’ catcher is 3-for-12 (.250 BA) in four starts with a double and one RBI. Reinhardt (7-1) plays at Faulkner University Feb. 16; will host University of Saint Francis (IN) in a three-game series Feb. 19-20; and plays host to Goshen College (IN) for a single game Feb. 21.


CHAZ WILSON — Columbus State University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . pitched 3.2 innings with two strikeouts and allowed one, unearned run in a middle relief appearance that was part of an 8-7 win over Albany State University Feb. 10. The Cougars have started the season 5-2 and open 2016 Peach Belt Conference play with a three-game series Feb. 19-21 at Young Harris College.
