Chargers sweep doubleheader with Southern Union


Brandon Etheridge tripled home the winning run with one out in the seventh as the Georgia Highlands Chargers completed a doubleheader sweep of Southern Union CC Wednesday night at the LakePoint baseball complex in Emerson.


Highlands won the nightcap 7-6 and captured the first game 6-3.


GHC pitcher, Colby Taylor, picked up the pitching victory after working a shutout inning and one-third. Taylor struck out three and yielded only one hit.


Casey Collins struck out eight and allowed three earned runs on three hits and three walks in the opening four and two-thirds. Chris Morton also made a pitching appearance.


Etheridge finished the second game with a pair of hits and scored a run. Jonathan White also had a pair of hits for the Chargers. Nick Fink drove in two runs with a fourth inning single.


In the first game of the doubleheader, the Chargers and Southern Union swapped the lead five times before Georgia Highlands took control in the bottom of the fifth on a grand slam homerun by Daniel Gooden.


Georgia Highlands held on down the stretch to win 6-3.


Tristan Roberts was credited with the Chargers’ pitching victory. He allowed a pair of runs in an inning and two-thirds. Nick Constan worked four innings, allowing no earned runs on three hits. Bradley Hood recorded the third out in the sixth for GHC and Will Griffin worked a scoreless frame.


Gooden, Mitch Burger, and Brandon Bell finished with two hits each. Gooden had four RBI with the slam. Bell and Devin Bilardello added one RBI each.


The Chargers (10-5) host a three game series with Sinclair State (OH) Friday and Saturday. The Friday game is set for 6pm. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1pm.
