Athletes Beyond Bartow: Irby highlights local women's collegiate basketball players

Former Cartersville High School standout, Kaelyn Irby (photo), highlights this group of 'Athletes Beyond Bartow'. Irby leads the Gadsden State CC Cardinal into the opening round of the Alabama Community College Conference championship tournament that begins March 1 at Wallace State CC-Selma.


Irby has three other former Bartow County high school players as teammates. Marissa Dubose, Morgan Jones, and Maya Jones are also on the GSCC squad. WOMENS BASKETBALL


SYDNEY BOYD — Brewton-Parker College (Fr., Woodland HS) . . .saw action for the Lady Barons in a 75-74 Southern States Athletic Conference game at Faulkner (AL) Feb. 27 and collected one rebound. BPC also beat Auburn-Montgomery Feb. 25 by three points in overtime for a 2-0 week. Brewton-Parker is 7-21 overall and 3-15 in the SSAC. The conference tournament is March 2-4 in Montgomery, AL

MARISSA DUBOSE — Gadsden State CC (Soph., Woodland HS) . . . scored eight points, grabbed nine rebounds, and had one steal in three games the past week. GSCC lost to Shelton State CC, but defeated Southern Union State CC and Enterprise State CC. The Cardinal improved to 13-14 overall and 5-5 in the Alabama Community College Conference. They open the ACCC Tournament Tuesday, Mar. 1 at Wallace State-Selma CC.


ASHLEY HUSKINS — University of the Cumberlands (Fr., Cass HS) . . . totaled 13 points and six rebounds in a 72-64 Mid-South Conference loss to Cumberland University Feb. 27. Huskins has appeared in 23 of 26 games, starting twice. She has averaged 4.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game in an average of 15.7 minutes per contest. The Lady Patriots finished the regular season 11-15 overall and 2-12 in the MSC. U of C finished seventh in the conference and will take on second-seeded Campbellsville University March 3 in the quarterfinal round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament in Frankfort, KY.


KAELYN IRBY — Gadsden State CC (Soph. Cartersville HS) . . . scored 11 points with eight steals and six rebounds in an 87-76 win over Enterprise State CC Feb. 26 … totaled 23 points, six rebounds, and two steals in an 82-73 win Feb. 24 vs. Southern Union State CC . . . finished with 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals during a loss to Shelton State CC Feb. 22. Irby is averaging 13 points and 4.5 rebounds in 26 games this season. She has 113 assists and 62 steals. The Cardinal finished the regular season with a 13-14 overall record and 5-5 in the Alabama Community College Conference. They open the ACCC Tournament Tuesday, Mar. 1 at Wallace State-Selma CC. MAYA JONES -- Gadsden State CC (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . averaging just under one point and one rebound per game for the Cardinal in 22 games. GSCC begins play in the ACCC Championship Tournament Tuesday, Mar. 1 at Wallace State-Selma CC.


MORGAN JONES — Gadsden State CC (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . averaging 4.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. . . scored five points and collected five rebounds with a steal and an assist Feb 26 in an 87-76 win over Enterprise State CC . . . scored four points with four rebounds Feb. 25 as the Cardinal defeated Southern Union CC 82-73. . . grabbed four rebounds and scored one point with an assist during a home loss to Shelton State CC Feb. 22. Gadsden finished the regular season with a 13-14 overall record and 5-5 in the Alabama Community College Conference. The Cardinal opens the ACCC Tournament Tuesday, Mar. 1 at Wallace State-Selma CC.
