Knights drop Wildcats in sub-region opener

The Woodland Wildcats dropped the first game of their sub-region, three game series with River Ridge Monday night (Feb. 29), 15-5.

The Wildcats jumped to an early lead with four runs in the top of the first, but the Knights answered with four of their own in the bottom of the inning, then added a go-ahead run in the bottom of the second inning.

Hunter Reaid reached on an error to start Woodland’s first inning rally. After a walk to Brandon Allen and a double steal, an RBI double by Cauy Williams put the Wildcats on top. Adam Martin coaxed a walk and then Grant Robinson drove home two more runs with a double.

Woodland tied the game 5-5 in the top of the fourth. Mitchell Taylor singled with one out and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Garrett Cornett. Following a single by Jacob Frye, Taylor scored on an error.

The Knights scored seven times in the fifth and closed out the game with three more runs in the sixth.

Kolby Stansel had the only other Wildcats’ hit in the fifth inning.

River Ridge (3-1, 1-0 in 7-AAAAA-A) pounded out 15 hits in the contest. Woodland committed five errors.
