Canes, Wildcats, and Colonels all suffer road losses Friday


MILL CREEK 7, CARTERSVILLE 0


Hoschton, GA — Mill Creek junior right hand pitcher, Christian Rutherford, tossed a perfect game, no-hitter Friday night as the Hawks defeated the Canes, 7-0. Mill Creek scored two runs in the home half of the second inning and added four more in the third to take a 6-0 lead. The Hawks added a final run in the bottom of the sixth.


Bryan Petty was 2-for-2 with a walk and drove in three runs to lead Mill Creek’s offense. Cameron Turley, Jay Pendley (RBI), and Matthew Lewis (RBI) also had two hits.


The Hawks improved to 4-4 with the win.


Jacob Fowler (3 IP, 6R, 5ER, 8H, 1BB, 2K) was handed the pitching loss. Mason Barnett (2 IP, 0R, 3BB, 1HBP, 1K) and Zach Yancey (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB, 3K) also took the mound for the Canes.


Cartersville (4-6) turns its attention to Region 7-AAAA play Tuesday at Gilmer. The Canes also entertain Northwest Whitfield on Thursday (March 24) and travel to Pickens on Friday (March 25) for region games.





SEQUOYAH 3, WOODLAND 2


Hickory Flat, GA — The Woodland Wildcats and Sequoyah Chiefs battled through five scoreless innings before Sequoyah won a back-and-forth struggle over the final two innings.


The Wildcats pushed across a run in the top of the sixth to take a 1-0 lead.


Jacob Frye and Hunter Reaid reached on back-to-back singles with two outs, then Frye scored on an infield error off the bat of Grant Robinson.


Sequoyah tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth on a walk and two singles.


Woodland regained the lead, 2-1, in the top of the seventh.


Brandon Allen doubled to lead off the frame, advanced to third on a pased ball, and scored on an RBI single by Cauy Williams.


The Chiefs (7-6 overall, 6-3 Sub-Region 7-AAAAA-A) won the game in the bottom of the seventh.


Austin Zeitler doubled to start the inning and scored on a Tres Zenchuck single. A single by Wobleski moved Zenchuck to third and he scored the game-deciding run on a wild pitch.


Patrick Conlin (5.2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 3H, 0BB, 10K) started on the mound for Sequoyah. Tyler Koprowski (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K ) entered in the sixth to pick up the win. Corey Linz retired the final out for the Chiefs with a strikeout after walking a batter.


Mitchell Taylor (6.2 IP, 3ER, 8H, 1BB, 9K) was the Wildcats’ starting pitcher and suffered the loss on the mound despite a complete-game effort.


Woodland (2-10 overall, 1-8 Sub-Region 7-AAAAA-A) has a three-game series with Creekview next week, hosting on Monday (March 21) and Friday (March 25) and traveling to Canton on Wednesday (March 23). All start times are 5:55pm.




ROME 3, CASS 1


Rome, GA -- Trailing 1-0 heading to the fourth inning Friday night, the Colonels tied Rome. The Wolves scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, however, for what turned out to be the game’s decising runs.


Rome senior pitcher, Jacob Harrell, kept Cass in check the remainder of the game for a 3-1 sub-region win that also earned the Wolves their second victory in the three-game series.


The Colonels managed only three hits. One each by Jake Collum, Bailey Campbell, and Steven Spell. Bett Gaddy had the only Cass RBI.


Ja’Kolbi Griffin had two hits for Rome (8-3, 4-2 in Sub-Region 7-AAAAA-A).


Collum (5 IP, 3R, 1ER, 4H, 0BB, 5K) was saddled with the pitching loss. Cody Johnson (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) took the mound in the sixth inning.


Cass starts a three-game series with Dalton Monday, March 21 in Dalton. The Colonels host on Wednesday, March 23, and return to Dalton on Friday, March 25. All start times are 5:55pm.
