GHC splits conference series with East Georgia


Georgia Highlands put eleven runs on the board Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader to earn a split for the day and a split in the week’s four-game, conference series with East Georgia State CC.


The Chargers managed only five hits in the series finale’, but took advantage of fourteen walks issued by East Georgia pitchers.


GHC took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Daniel Gooden, but it was a five-run second inning when the Chargers took control.


East Georgia pitchers hit one batter and walked seven as Highlands took a 6-0 lead without benefit of a hit.


After East Georgia cut the Georgia Highland’s lead in half at 6-3, Triston Roberts delivered a two-run single and Devin Bilardello added an RBI single in the fourth inning to give the Chargers a 9-3 advantage.


The Chargers added two more runs in the sixth on a Nick Constan hit, a walk to Joel Munoz, and a Brandon Bell two-RBI hit.

Georgia Highlands utilized four pitchers in the win. Sam Sowerbrower picked up the win with a 2 and 2/3 inning performance, allowing no runs on a pair of hits and two walks.


In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, East Georgia pitcher Payton Phillips tossed a complete game shutout to beat the Chargers, 6-0. Phillips gave up only two hits, walked three, and struck out seven.


Zach McCrum and Drew Davis had the only Georgia Highlands’ hits.


With the series split, Georgia Highlands in 4-4 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association and 19-17 overall. East Georgia is 16-16, 3-5.


South Georgia CC and Abraham Baldwin currently lead the conference at 5-1.


The Chargers open their next four-game conference series Tuesday at LakePoint against Andrew College.
