Wildcats' two-out rally supports Taylor-made victory over Cass


For most of the night on Monday, the sub-region series opener between Woodland and Cass was highlighted by the two starting pitchers. Woodland’s Mitchell Taylor and Austin Pruett of Cass had a true pitchers’ duel going until the Wildcats’ offense broke through for seven-runs after two outs in the seventh inning to defeat the Colonels 7-3.


Woodland trailed 2-0 going to their final frame and Pruett retired the first two batters of the inning, but the Wildcats rallied with two outs on a pair of walks, a single, three doubles, and a homerun.


Jacob Frye, Grant Robinson, and Brandon Allen doubled in the seventh inning for Woodland. Hunter Reaid had a hit, and Cauy Williams hit a two-run homer to give the Wildcats a 7-2 lead.


Cass scored a run in the bottom of the seventh off an infield error for the 7-3 final score.


Woodland’s Taylor (7 IP, 3R, 2ER, 8H, 1BB, 3K) earned the complete game pitching victory with an outstanding performance.


Pruett (6.2 IP, 2ER, 5H, 4BB, 6K) suffered the tough loss for the Colonels. Cody Johnson (0.0 IP, 3ER, 2H, 1BB) relieved Pruett with two outs and a runner at second in the seventh, and Jordan Reed (0.1 IP, 2ER, 2H) entered to record the final out in the inning.


Evan Hinton had an RBI triple to give Cass a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Hinton also singled home Jake Collum in the fourth inning for a 2-0 advantage for the Colonels.


Reaid was 3-for-4 with one RBI for Woodland. Allen had two hits and two RBI. Williams drove in two runs with a hit. Zach Woods, Frye (RBI), and Robinson (RBI) had the other Wildcats’ hits.


Hinton’s 3-for-3 performance accounted for a pair of RBI for the Colonels. Collum had two hits. Bailey Campbell, Casey Patterson, and Reed had the other Cass hits.


Woodland 3-14 overall, 2-11 in sub-region 7-AAAAA-A) hosts Cass (5-13, 4-9) Wednesday at 5:55pm. The third game of the series will be back at Cass again on Friday (April 11).
