Early deficit too much for Colonels

Sequoyah took a 5-0 lead over the first three innings Monday night on their way to a 7-2 sub-region series opening win at Cass.

The Colonels narrowed the early five run deficit to three with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, but would get no closer.

Steven Spell and Jordan Reed reached base on Sequoyah errors to start the Cass fifth and Collum singled to center field to load the bases. Evan Hinton and Nathan Smith both coaxed walks to drive in the two Colonels runs.

Cass managed only three hits.

Collum, Smith, and Tyler Hendon each singled.

Starting pitcher, Austin Pruett (3 IP, 5R, 1ER, 3H, 3BB, 2K), was tagged with the loss. Cody Johnson (4 IP, 2ER, 4H, 1BB, 4K) took the bump for the final four innings.

Austin Zeitler had two hits and one RBI for the Chiefs and Randy Shelton drove in two runs to lead Sequoyah’s offense.

The Chiefs improved to 14-7 overall and 12-4 in sub-region 7-AAAAA-A. Cass falls to 5-16 overall and 4-12 in the sub-region.

The two teams play again Wednesday at Sequoyah and will conclude the series Friday at Cass. First pitch for both games is set for 5:55pm.
