Youthful Eagles fall to Mt. Zion, 9-1

Trace Still had a big night at the plate for Excel Christian Academy Tuesday night, but the Eagles still fell to visiting Mt. Zion, 9-1.

Still was 3-for-3 and scored the only Excel run on a RBI-double by Joseph Cuomo. Wyatt Karlovich and Marco Haro also collected hits for Excel Christian.

Mt. Zion took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning before ECA made it 4-1 in the bottom half. Mt. Zion then added a single run in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth for a 9-1 final.

Mt. Zion totaled nine hits and took advantage of five Excel errors.

Cuomo (5 IP, 5R, 2ER, 4H, 1BB, 8K) had a solid outing on the mound for the Eagles in the loss. Levi Blackwell (1 IP, 4R, 3ER, 5H, 2BB) and Jordan Wilkie (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 3K) also pitched for Excel Christian.

“We started seven freshmen tonight and we saw some encouraging signs,” said Excel head coach Mike Cuomo. “(Joseph) Cuomo pitched well and (Aaron) Pumphrey has really improved defensively.”

“Marco Haro hit a rocket in the fourth inning that would have put us back in the game, but was doubled up on the liner,” added Cuomo.

Mt. Zion moved to 9-12 overall and 5-10 in Region 6-A with their win.

Excel Christian (1-14, 0-13) plays consecutive road games at Trion on Thursday (4:30pm), at Christian Heritage on Friday (4pm), and at North Cobb Christian on Saturday (5pm).
