Chargers take one of four in ABAC series


Georgia Highlands won only one of three over the weekend at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and slipped to a fourth place tie in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association standings with two more weekend series remaining in the regular season.


The Chargers lost the four-game series opener at LakePoint Tuesday, 7-5, but bounced back to win Friday in Tifton, 8-1. ABAC then swept a Saturday doubleheader 14-9 and 8-1.


Georgia Highlands (24-24 overall, 9-11 GCAA) trails conference leader Darton Colege by 5 and 1/2 games. South Georgia State CC is second in the conference at 13-7 and ABAC is now 12-8 and in possession of third place.


Gordon College (9-11) is in a tie for fourth in the conference with the Chargers. East Georgia (8-11), Andrew College (7-12), and West Georgia Tech (6-13) round out the GCAA standings.

Brandon Etheridge was 5-for-14 with one RBI in the four game set. Mitch Burger hit a solo homer and collected three hits. Jonathan White was 5-for-14 and had a six-RBI game on Saturday.


Brandon Bell was 4-for-5 in Friday’s game. Trenton Nutter and Zach McCrum were 3-for-11 each and both had a pair of RBI in the series. Zach McCrum was 3-for-11 with two RBI, Nick Finck was 3-for-12 with one RBI, and Evan Mask finished the series 3-for-7 with one RBI.


Tanner Thomson picked up the pitching victory for the Chargers on Friday with a six inning performance that scattered five hits. He struck out five while yielding only a pair of runs for a 5-2 win. Will Griffin got the save with a scoreless ninth inning and two strikeouts.


Georgia Highlands plays Gordon College Tuesday at State Mutal Stadium in Rome before traveling to Barnesville for a single game Thursday and a doubleheader on Saturday.
