Lady Cats win Westover Invitational; Canes run 6th at West Orange Invitational

The top-ranked Woodland girls cross country team won the 2016 Westover Invitational Saturday hosted by Westover High School at Robert Cross Middle School in Albany.


The Woodland girls team is currently ranked No. 1 in Class AAAAA. The Lady Cats, with all five scoring runners among the top 18 scoring finishers, totaled 46 points. Second place Lovett challenged for the title and had their top five runners in the top 17 scoring places, but came up just short with 52 total points. Richmond Hill (91 points) was third. There were 20 teams competing.

Freshmen Carli Clymer (photo right) set a new school record with a time of 18:52.38 to finish third individually among 178 runners. Fellow frosh Angela Cochran (photo below) was fourth overall in 18:56.59. McKenna Trapheagen, also a freshman for the Lady Cats, placed tenth in 19:47.44.


Sophomore Cheyenne Spinks (19:51.55) and junior Lindsay Scifers (20:28.08) completed Woodland’s top five.

Casey Bolan (20:47.24), Mackenzie Stephenson (22:28.75) completed the Lady Cats’ top seven.


The Woodland boys team placed 11th of 32 teams. Jonathan Holloway, a junior, placed 36th of 256 individual runners with a time of 17:20.22 to lead the Wildcats. Senior Jacob Giltz (17:51.99), freshman Dylan Sterm (18:22.54), junior Nick Warren (18:26.47), and junior Dawson McClure (18:30.21) were Woodland’s top five. Levi Brandenburg (18:36.19) and Reece Mitchell (18:38.50) completed the Wildcats’ top seven.

Woodland runs next at the Nike / Fleet Feet Coach Wood Invitational at Gainesville College on October 15.


The Cartersville cross country teams ran Saturday at the West Orange Invitational hosted by West Orange High School in Winter Garden, Florida. The Canes finished sixth of 21 boys teams. The Lady Canes were 12th of 16 girls teams.


West Shore (Melbourne, FL) High School won the boys race. First Academy (Orlando, FL) captured the girls race title.

The Florida event drew 171 boys runners and 151 girls.
