Canes unable to overcome early deficit at Showdown


Cartersville fell behind Providence (Jacksonville, FL) 5-0 in the second inning Friday afternoon and fought back hard, before falling 6-4 in the second round of the championship bracket of the 2017 Perfect Game High School Showdown at LakePoint Sports.


Providence scored a single run in the top of the first inning and four more in the second.


The Hurricanes answered with a pair of runs in the second and one more in the bottom of the third inning to narrow the deficit to 5-3, but a run for Providence in the fifth and one more for Cartersville in the sixth led to a 6-4 final score.


Canes’ sophomore pitcher, Mason Barnett (4 IP, 5R, 3ER, 8H, 1BB, 4K), started and was tagged with the loss. Jake Norris (1ER, 1H, 2BB), Levi Ayers (1K), and Spencer Dickey (1H, 1BB) each worked one inning.


Elijah Gill (5.1 IP, 4R, 0ER, 7H, 2BB, 6K), a Florida International signee, was the winning pitcher for the Stallions.


Florida State signee Alec Sanchez, Florida commit Nathan Hickey, and Cameron Wright combined for six hits and three RBIs for Providence.


Jacob Fowler, J.P. Martin, and Noah Daniel each produced a pair of hits. Jake Gooch, Anthony Seigler, and Devin Warner (RBI) each added one hit.


Providence advances to play Etowah in the quarterfinals later Friday night.


Cartersville (8-2) will play IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL) in a consolation game Saturday morning at 8am at LakePoint.
