Athletes Beyond Bartow update for week ending March 12 includes collegiate baseball, softball, baske

Bartow Sports Zone's weekly Athletes Beyond Bartow update for action through Sunday, March 12.


This week's update features college baseball, softball, basketball, track and field, and tennis, plus European pro basketball.

 

TENNIS



PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Sophomore, Cartersville resident, Laurel Springs Academy). . . after dropping the first set, won her singles match, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 6-2 to help her team defeat Western Kentucky last Monday in Murfreesboro, TN. She also combined with teammate Carmen Blanco to capture a 6-1 decision in doubles in the 4-3 team victory. The Cardinals (10-2) play next at Butler Wednesday and will be home against Oakland University on Sunday.




TRACK & FIELD




AUBREE COLE — Jacksonville State University (Freshman, Cartersville HS)... (photo left) . . placed third in the 5000 meter run Saturday at the Gamecock Quad Invite hosted by Jax State. Her time was 20:09.07. Jacksonville State will compete Friday in Atlanta at the Emory Invitational.



SAMANTHA PATTERSON — Jacksonville State University (Junior, Woodland HS)... (photo center). . . placed second in the pole vault with a mark of 10-11.75 last Saturday at the Gamecock Quad Invite. Jacksonville State competes next at the Emory Invitational this Friday in Atlanta.


BLAKE PERRY — Jacksonville State University (Junior, Cartersville HS)... (photo right). . . placed second in the triple jump and second in the 100 meter hurdles last Saturday at the Jax State hosted Gamecock Quad Invitational. Her triple jump mark was 39-01.25 and her hurdles time was 15.17. Jacksonville State will compete Friday in Atlanta at the Emory Invitational.




BASKETBALL


EMMANUEL HOLLOWAY — UU Korihait UUsikaupunki - Finnish Pro League (G, Illinois State, Woodland HS). . . scored 10 points with one rebound and one assist as UU Korihait lost 95-78 to BC Nokia last week. The team is now 5-27 on the season and plays at Kataja on Friday.





A.J. MOSBY — Alcorn State University (Junior, PG/SG, Cartersville HS). . . In the SWAC Championship Tournament, Mosby scored 17 points at home against Mississippi Valley State and then scored 15 against Southern University in the conference semifinals in Houston. He was limited to only three points in the conference championship game against Texas Southern also played in Houston. He totaled 15 rebounds, 9 assists, and 6 steals in the three conference tournament games. Alcorn State beat Mississippi Valley State 63-60; beat Southern 81-59; and lost 53-50 to Texas Southern in the finals. The Braves finished the year 18-14 overall and 13-5 in the SWAC. The 18 wins are the most for the Braves since the 2001-02 season.


ADRIAN RODGERS — Malbas Oresund Malmo - Swedish Pro League (Cartersville native, Centennial HS, Southern University). . .scored 25 points with two rebounds and three assists as Malbas Oresund won for only the third time all season in defeating UMEA 93-84 last Tuesday. Rodgers leads the team in scoring with a 15.7 average. With only four games remaining in the regular season, Malbas Oresund plays at Sodertalje Monday night and hosts Norrkoping Friday.



COREY TOBIN — Reinhardt University (Junior, G, Cartersville HS). . . scored three points with five rebounds, two assists, and a steal in an 84-74 opening round loss at the NAIA National Championship Tournament in Point Lookout, Missouri last Wednesday. Tobin averaged 7.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and one steal per game this season. The Eagles compiled a 22-9 mark this season.







SOFTBALL



BETHANY BALLARD — Armstrong State University (Senior, C/1B, Cass HS). . . made a pinch hit appearance in a 9-0 Peach Belt Conference win at Lander University Saturday. Ballard has appeared in five games with one RBI and a .250 batting average. The Pirates (15-6, 5-1 PBC) play a non-conference doubleheader at Shorter University Wednesday and host a PBC doubleheader with Flagler College Saturday.


TAYLOR BRASELTON — Reinhardt University (Senior, SS, Woodland HS). . . went 3-for-8, scored two runs, and stole a base in home wins over Lynn University and University of the Cumberlands (KY) last Saturday. Braselton has a .442 batting average through 22 games and 86 at bats for the Eagles. Reinhardt (23-9, 3-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts a doubleheader with Talladega College Friday.



SYDNEY HODORFF — LaGrange College (Sophomore, C, Woodland HS). . . was 1-for-11 with a walk and scored twice in four games this past week as the Panthers split doubleheaders at home with Covenant College and at Maryville College (TN). LaGrange (4-12, 3-5 Southern Athletic Association) hosts Greensboro College Saturday and Averett University Sunday in conference doubleheaders.



TAYLOR WAITS — Brewton-Parker College (Freshman, Cartersville HS). . . was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored March 4 vs. St. Thomas (FL). The Lady Barons (6-17, 1-1) host conference doubleheaders with Coastal Georgia Tuesday and Middle Georgia State on Saturday.


TAYLOR WEEKS — Reinhardt University (Senior, OF, Adairsville HS). . . was 3-for-4, scored three runs, drew a pair of walks, stole a base and had one RBI in home wins over Lynn University and University of the Cumberlands (KY) last Saturday. Weeks has a .427 batting average through 22 games and 75 at bats. Reinhardt (23-9, 3-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts a doubleheader with Talladega College Friday.



LAUREN WOMACK — Georgia Highlands College (Sophomore, SS, Cass HS). . . produced a pair of hits, a walk, and a sacrifice in four games last week as the Chargers went 1-3. Womack has a .271 batting average with seven RBIs and 14 runs scored this season. She has also stolen three bases. GHC (23-8, 7-5 GCAA) plays a doubleheader at Roane State CC Wednesday and will host West Georgia Tech Saturday for a doubleheader.


ANNALYN YANTIS -- Samford University (Sophomore, P/UT, Cartersville HS)... had a pinch-hit at bat, failing to reach base in a 10-9 loss to Tennessee State on Sunday. The Bulldogs (7-17) host Western Kentucky Tuesday and will play both Western Illinois and Tennessee-Martin twice this weekend at the UT-Martin Tournament Saturday and Sunday.








BASEBALL



ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Freshman, LHP, Cartersville HS). . . needed only two pitches to get a double play and to work the final two outs of an 11-8 loss at home to Presbyterian College last Friday. Anderson also recorded two outs in the fifth inning last Tuesday in a 14-3 home loss to South Alabama. He yielded four earned runs on three hits and two walks with one strikeout against the Jaguars. Auburn was 3-2 last week and is now 12-5 overall. The Tigers host Alabama-Birmingham Tuesday, Jacksonville State Wednesday, and open Southeastern Conference play Friday through Sunday with 5th-ranked Florida.


BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Limestone College (Junior, OF, Cass HS). . . was 3-for-10, scored two runs with one RBI, a double, and a triple in a three game home series against Erskine College this past weekend raising his season batting average to .298. The Saints won one game in the Conference Carolinas series and are now 13-11 overall and 3-6 in league play. Limestone plays at Carson-Newman Tuesday, hosts 27th-ranked Lenioir-Rhyne Wednesday, and returns to conference play this weekend with a home, three-game series against North Greenville.



CARRINGTON EVANS — Augusta University (Freshman, OF, Cartersville HS). . .has become the regular starting left fielder for the Jaguars in recent games. Evans was 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored last Tuesdays in a 10-7 win over Saginaw Valley. He then went 5-for-14 with a home run, three RBIs and four runs scored in a home, conference three-game series with UNC-Pembroke this past weekend. Augusta (9-11 overall, 4-5 Peach Belt Conference) travels to Claflin University Tuesday and plays PBC opponent and 7th-ranked University of North Georgia Friday through Sunday in Dahlonega.




TY FOWLER — Tennessee Wesleyan College (Senior, RHP, Cartersville HS). . . pitched the ninth inning of a 10-1 win at Mobile University last Tuesday allowing a hit and a walk with one strikeout, but no runs. He also worked two innings of middle relief last Friday in an 8-7 extra innings loss at Union College (KY). He gave up a pair of hits and struck out one batter. TWC (16-8, 5-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) entertains 15th-ranked Lindsey Wilson College Wednesday and will host AAC-foe and 14th-ranked Bryan College (TN) for three games Friday and Saturday with a doubleheader on Saturday.



MICHAEL GOSS — UNC-Greensboro (R-Senior, 1B, Cartersville HS). . . went 1-for-3 with a walk and scored a run in a 12-8 home win over Elon College last Tuesday. Then in a four-game series split with visiting Princeton last weekend, Goss was 3-for-13 with a walk, one run scored and four RBIs. Goss has a .269 batting average with a pair of home runs and five extra base hits in 16 starts and 52 at bats. He also carries a .985 fielding percentage at first base in 131 chances. The Spartans (8-8) host Lafayette College Thursday through Saturday in a non-conference four-game series.




BRADLEY HOOD — Georgia Highlands College (Sophomore, RHP, Cass HS). . . made a one inning relief appearance last Wednesday against Vincennes University in a 5-4 victory. Hood has made four appearances for six innings, a 1.50 ERA, and seven strikeouts. He has one win and a save. GHC (17-9) was 5-1 last week and had an 11-game win streak halted on Sunday. The Chargers will host Three Rivers CC (Missouri) Friday night and Saturday (DH).



SEAN McDERMOTT — Cleveland State CC (Sophomore, 1B, Adairsville HS). . . was 0-for-2 with a walk and an RBI Saturday in a home loss to Motlow State CC. McDermott has a .434 batting average with two homers and 14 RBIs in 15 games for the Cougars. Cleveland State CC (14-4, 4-2 TCCAA) plays Triton College Monday at LakePoint in Emerson and will host Chattanooga State CC in a conference three-game series Friday and Saturday.



JO JO UNDERWOOD — UNC-Greensboro (Senior, 3B, Cartersville HS). . . started at third base, but was 0-for-2 at the plate last Tuesday in a 12-8 win over Elon College. He was also utilized as a pinch runner last Saturday in a 5-3 home loss to Princeton. Underwood has appeared in nine of 16 games with seven starts. The Spartans (8-8) host Lafayette College Thursday through Saturday in a non-conference, four-game series.


TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (Junior, OF, Adairsville HS). . . was 6-for-16 in four games last week while starting in right field. He has a current nine-game hitting streak. He had three RBIs in a home win last Wednesday over Southern Indiana. He had a double and scored a run in a three-game series at Columbus State last Friday and Saturday. Washington has a .372 batting average with six RBIs in 10 games and 43 at bats. Young Harris (6-13, 1-5 Peach Belt Conference) will host Brevard College Wednesday in non-conference action before hosting PBC-foe and 28th-ranked Francis Marion University for three games this weekend.




CHAZ WILSON — Columbus State University (Senior, RHP, Cass HS). . . made a one inning relief appearance last Wednesday and was part of a four-pitcher shutout of Tuskegee University. Wilson struck out the side in the ninth inning and currently has a 3.00 ERA. The Cougars (12-8, 7-2 Peach Belt Conference) have won eight of ten, but had a five-game win streak snapped Saturday by Young Harris College. CSU plays a non-conference game Wednesday at Albany State University and will host the No. 1 ranked team in NCAA D-II, USC-Aiken, for a three-game series this Friday through Sunday.
