Chargers drop doubleheader at East Georgia


The Georgia Highlands College baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader Saturday at East Georgia State CC in Swainsboro. The host Bobcats earned a split of the four-game Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association series, winning 4-0 and 6-4.


Georgia Highlands won the first two games of the series 17-0 last Tuesday and 11-2 Friday night.


East Georgia pitcher, Payton Phillips, tossed a complete-game two-hitter in the opener and recorded 10 strikeouts against the Chargers.


In the second game, Georgia Highlands took a 2-0 lead in the second inning before East Georgia scored six runs over their next three frames to take a 6-2 advantage. A pair of Chargers’ runs in the sixth inning made it closer, but GHC fell by a 6-4 final.


Bronco O’Brien had the only Chargers’ hits in the first game.

Colby Taylor (5 IP, 4R, 3ER, 6H, 4BB, 5K) was tagged with the pitching loss. Sam Sowerbrower pitching a scoreless sixth inning.

Matt Vaccro had three hits including a double in the second game for GHC.

Drew Wilson suffered the pitching loss. He allowed six runs, four earned, on six hits and three walks. Wilson struck out three. Tyler Sellers struck out two and walked two, but allowed no hits or runs over the final three innings.


East Georgia improved to 15-13 overall and 5-3 in conference action.


Georgia Highlands (22-11, 2-2) plays Andrew College in a four-game, conference series that begins at Andrew College Tuesday night and will conclude with three games at LakePoint Friday and Saturday. Friday’s single game is scheduled for 6pm and Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 1pm.
