Hot Carrollton bats overcome early Cass lead


The Cass baseball team scored plenty of runs Monday evening at Region 7AAAAA rival Carrollton, but the Trojans’ offense was clicking on all cylinders as well.


Carrollton scored in every inning except the fifth for an 11-9 victory.


The Colonels scored seven times in the top of the second inning to take a 7-2 lead and added two more in the third to hold a 9-5 advantage, but the Trojan bats kept producing.


Carrollton scored a run in the bottom of the third to narrow the Cass lead to 9-6, before scoring four more in the fourth and an insurance run in the sixth.


The Trojans rapped out 13 hits. Cass had nine.


Carrollton utilized five pitcher with reliever Colin Broz picking up the win in middle relief by tossing three shutout innings. Ty Murray picked up a save by working a scoreless seventh.


Jake Collum (3.2 IP, 10ER, 11H, 1BB, 3K) took the loss on the mound for Cass. Austin Pruett (2.1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 3K) finished the game. He entered with two outs in the fourth inning.


Tate Fricks drove in three runs with three hits for Carrollton. Mike Wright (HR, 2 RBIs), Asa Awbrey (RBI), and Andy Smith had two hits each.


Zach Yancey (photo) was the only Cass player with two hits. Clay Means (RBI), Bailey Campbell (2 RBI-double), Jake Collum, Tyler Hendon, Cody Johnson, Evan Hinton (double), and Nathan Smith (RBI) had one hit apiece.


Carrollton improved to 17-3 with the win and holds the top spot in Region 7AAAAA with a 7-0 mark.


Cass is now 11-9 overall and 4-3 in region play.


The two teams play the finale’ of their two-game region series Wednesday at Cass at 5:55pm. The Colonels travel to Rome on Friday to begin another region set.
