Chargers win series opener with South Georgia State


The Georgia Highlands College baseball team took the first game of this week’s four-game series with South Georgia State Tuesday night at LakePoint with a 6-1 win.


The Chargers took a 4-0 lead with three runs in the fourth inning and added single runs in the sixth and seventh frames on their way to victory. The Hawks scored their only run in the eighth inning.


Jake Lovvorn earned the win for Chargers. He tossed seven innings, surrendering one run, nine hits, striking out two, and walking one. Bradley Hood worked the final two innings on the mound for Georgia Highlands. He did not allow a run, hit, or walk and struck out three.


The Chargers’ three-run fourth was ignited by a double from Caleb McElwaney and a single by Miguel Urbina.


GHC produced eleven hits. John White, McElwaney, and Matt Vaccaro had multiple hit games for the Chargers. Grant Bodison and Urbina finished with two RBIs each.


South Georgia slipped to 26-13 overall and 4-5 in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association play with the loss. The Chargers improved to 25-13 overall and 5-4 in conference games.


Georgia Highlands and South Georgia State will continue their series Friday with a single game at 5:30pm in Douglas, GA. The Hawks and Chargers then play a doubleheader Saturday in Douglas beginning at 1pm.
