Colonels rally to even region mark


The Cass baseball team trailed Rome 7-4 going to the bottom of the fifth inning Tuesday night at home, but rallied with a run in the fifth and five more in the sixth for a 10-7 Region 7AAAAA victory.


Gavin Young went 3-for-3 for the Colonels, including a double and two RBIs to lead the Cass attack. Bailey Campbell (photo) homered and doubled. Clay Means drove in a pair of runs with two hits and a sacrifice fly. Steven Spell doubled twice to plate two runs. Austin Pruett had one hit and one RBI. Nathan Smith drove in one run and Brett Gaddy was hit by a pitch three times, scored a run, and had one RBI.


Cody Johnson, Garrett Brookshire, Zach Yancey, and Gaddy each stole a base.


Austin Pruett (3.2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 5H, 2BB, 2K) picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Jake Collum (3.1 IP, 5ER, 8H, 2BB, 5K).


Xavier Roberts led Rome’s offense with three hits. Kade Garrard drove in two runs with two hits and Alden Astin had two hits including a double and one RBI. Knox Kadum drove in a run with a one double.


With the loss, the Wolves fall to 10-12 overall and 3-5 in Region 7AAAAA.


Cass (12-11, 5-5) hosts 7th-ranked Kell Thursday at 5:55pm and will travel to Kell Friday at 5:55pm for a two-game region series.
