GHC sweeps at Cleveland State


The Georgia Highlands College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader Thursday at Cleveland State (TN). The Chargers won 4-3 in eight innings and 11-0 in five innings.


Rebecca Meade (18-7) got the win in game one throwing 5.1 innings. Micayla McCoy (16-5) entered to pick up her third save in the opener and tossed a complete game shutout in the second game. The pair combined for seven strikeouts in the twin-bill.


The offense was led by Shayla Smith (photo), who hit for the cycle on the day. Smith was 6-for-7 with a walk, sacrifice hit, double, triple and a home run. She drove in three of the Chargers’ four runs in the extra inning victory.


Madison Gianfala recorded five hits on the day and swiped a pair of bases. Lauren Womack was a perfect 3-for-3 in the second game.


GHC is now 38-12 on the year and travels to Carrollton Friday to take on West Georgia Tech in the final conference doubleheader of the season.


The Chargers currently sit third in the conference standings behind ABAC (30-20, 20-8) and Georgia Military (42-14, 19-9).
