SHGA / AMG Update: Charles Howell III edged in playoff at Quicken Loans National
Charles Howell III had a birdie try from just over 21 feet on the last hole of regulation play Sunday at the Quicken Loans National on the PGA Tour. It was a putt for the tournament win, but the ball barely slipped by the left edge and left Howell in a playoff with Kyle Stanley.
Stanley went on to win the tournament at TPC Potomac with a par on the first playoff hole leaving Howell, 38, with his second runner-up finish of 2017 and the 16th runner-up finish of his PGA Tour career.
Howell finished second to Jon Rahm earlier this year in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego.
The resulting solo second place finish was the top performance this past week for players affiliated with Cartersville Country Club's Scott Hamilton Golf Academy and Athletic Motion Golf.
Howell, an Augusta, GA native now residing in Orlando, is one of the most consistent players on tour. This week marked his return to competitive play after a nine-week break due to a rib injury. Although he has gone nearly 300 tournament starts without a win, he remains just one of three golfers to finish in the top 125 on the PGA Tour money list since 2000.

He has a pair of PGA Tour victories in his career. He won the Michelob Championship at Kingmill by two shots in 2002 and captured the 2007 Nissan Open when he edged Phil Mickelson in a playoff.
Howell, a former NCAA national champion as an individual and with his team at Oklahoma State University (2000), won the Haskins Award honoring the most outstanding collegiate golfer and was PGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 2001.
Elsewhere on the senior PGA Champions Tour, SHGA-player Joe Durant continued his steady play and his rise in the season-long Schwab Cup standings.
Durant tied for 12th at the U.S. Senior Open with a 3-under-par total (66-67-73-71) at Salem Country Club in Massachusetts. The finish moved him up two spots on the Charles Schwab Cup Money List to 16th.
