Defensive miscues cost Woodland in region tourney opener
Woodland softball lost its opening game of the Region 7-AAAAA playoff tournament Monday night in Carrollton to the Kell Longhorns, 8-3.
Kell took a 4-0 lead through two innings and added a run in the fourth inning and three more in the sixth inning.
Woodland scored single runs in the third, fifth, and seventh innings.
Kell out hit the Lady Cats 11 to five and Woodland committed six defensive errors in the loss.

Longhorns’ pitcher, Mia DeAngelis (7 IP, 3R, 0ER, 5H, 5BB, 11K), picked up the complete game victory in the circle. Woodland’s Sarah Baynard (6 IP, 8R, 0ER, 11H, 2BB, 1K, photo) suffered the pitching loss despite not allowing an earned run.
Lexie Scarpantonio provided the big bat for Kell with four hits and two RBIs. DeAngelis, Kaylie Casie (2 RBIs), and Kasey Blair (RBI) added two hits each for the Longhorns.
Caroline Higdon had two hits and one RBI for Woodland. Audrey Morris, Jordan Duck, and Morgan Bailey contributed one hit each. Ansley Evans added one RBI.
Kell improved to 14-4 and will play top seed Carrollton Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in a winner’s bracket game.
Woodland (12-14) plays Hiram at 5:30 p.m. in an elimination game. The winner will play the Kell-Carrollton loser in a second elimination game at 7:30 p.m.
