Cartersville softball eliminated in region playoffs

Cartersville softball was eliminated from the post season Tuesday evening with an 11-3 home loss to Troup County in the two teams’ best-of-three Region 5-AAAA playoff series.


The two teams split a doubleheader Saturday to force Tuesday’s series deciding game.


Troup County took an early 4-0 lead in the first two innings with Cartersville narrowing the margin to 4-2 in the bottom half of the second.


The Tigers then posted five runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 9-2 and held on late for the 11-3 decision.


Mackenzie Miller (7 IP, 3R, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 0K) was the complete game pitching winner for Troup. Anna Kate McElhaney (1.2 IP, 4ER, 4H, 2BB) and Colbi Ballard (5.1 IP, 7R, 5ER, 7H, 4BB, 1K) split the pitching duties for Cartersville.


Kayla Lane and Skye Loftin combined for six hits and seven RBIs to lead Troup’s eleven-hit attack.


Anna Kate McElhaney had two hits for Cartersville. Paris Poston (RBI), Ballard, Lauren McElhaney, and Presley Edwards had the other Lady Canes’ hits. Mattie Johnson and Rylie Harris each added one RBI.


Troup County (11-14) advances in the region playoffs and also earned a berth in the Class AAAA state playoffs.


Cartersville’s season concludes with a 9-16 mark.
