Woodland falls in region final to 3rd-ranked Carrollton
Woodland scored a pair of runs early, but Carrollton answered with five runs in the first three innings on their way to a 7-2 win in the Region 7-AAAAA championship game Thursday in Carrollton.
Carrollton and Woodland will both host first round series in the Class AAAAA state playoffs that begin next week.
The Lady Cats started fast and took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. They also tied the game 2-2 in the top of the second, but the 3rd-ranked Lady Trojans answered every time and kept scoring runs.
Both teams took advantage of some early errors. Woodland committed three of their five total miscues in the first three innings and Carrollton also made two errors in the early innings.
Carrollton pitcher Olivia Fannin (7 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB, 2K) picked up the complete-game pitching win for the Lady Trojans by tossing a two-hitter. Woodland’s Madi Bentley (6 IP, 7R, 3ER, 7H, 1BB) also pitched a complete game.
Ansley Barge led Carrollton with two hits that included a double and one RBI. Five other players had one hit each for the Lady Trojans.
Brittany Cox and Bella Carnes had one hit and one RBI each for the Lady Cats.
Carrollton (25-2) will host the 4-seed from Regon 8-AAAAA in a best-of-three series that opens with a doubleheader October 11.
As region runner-up, Woodland (14-15) will host the 3-seed from Region 8-AAAAA in a best-of-three series that also begins with a doubleheader Wednesday, October 11.
